Airfix 1/72nd Martlet Mk.IV, FN142, 893 NAS, HMS Formidable 1942

- Hiya Folks,..... well I finished the model this morning,.....then dropped it onto the kitchen floor!! Lost the tail wheel and the folded wind snapped off,.....but a raid on the spares box and a bit more glueing and it is fixed,.......so here it is. I`ve added a rudimentary rear view mirror onto the windscreen and I used a converted Academy P-51B canopy for the sliding hood section. As I have mentioned previously, the propeller comes from an Airfix C-47 Dakota and had the blades cut down and re shaped.

It has been a fun build but a the propeller and canopy were a bit of a let down,......nevertheless I have already started another and I`m building the F4F-4 as a Martlet Mk.V,.....so that tells you something!!

Cheers

Hi folks,nostalgia in the form of Airfix's Grant and Matilda,both canny little builds I preferred the Matilda over the Grant.

but I was less than happy with my take on it but then it pre-dates the Matilda by a few years and Airfix offer a very uninspiring scheme!

Hasegawa 1/72nd P-38F-1 Lightning, 41-7587, UN-O `Texas Terror-Mad Dash', Capt. Jack Ilfrey, 7th FS, 1st FG, Tunisia 1942-43.

Hiya Folks,

               Well after a bit of a struggle and lots and lots of elbow grease here is my finished Hasegawa 1/72nd scale P-38F-1 Lightning, built as the aircraft flown by Jack Ilfrey during his time with the 7th FS, 1t FG. The names `Texas Terror' and `Mad Dash' (Ilfrey was a Texan and the latter was a 1940`s comic character) were applied to the booms of 417587 at Kirton in Lindsey in the UK prior to setting off for N. Africa. Due to technical problems Ilfrey was forced to land in neutral Portugal and he and his aircraft were impounded,.....however,....while demostrating to the Portugese how to start the aircraft following repairs and with an armed guard on the wing,....he accelerated away, took off and completed his journey,...becoming an ace over N. Africa before moving back to the UK for his 2nd and 3rd combat tours, flying the P-38 & P-51.

The model was brush painted using Tamiya and Polly Scale acrylics.

1/48th Eduard Spitfire Mk.IX- MH894, WZ-JJ, `Lady Ellen III' 309th FS, USAAF, Italy 1944  -

This is the new 1/48th scale Eduard kit, built from the box and hairy brush painted using Polly Scale acrylics with Aeromaster decals. The markings are for `Lady Ellen III' which was the aircraft flown by Lt. Fawcett of the 309th Fighter Sqn, at Pomigliano, Italy during March 1944.

DSCF8866_zps6dkt9qwu.jpg
DSCF8873_zps3ke4npuv.jpg

The patches behind the cockpit represent the Gas/Chemical reaction paint applied to many USAAF aircraft in the MTO and they were applied in this case freehand as per the camouflage,.....but using Zinc Chromate Green/Yellow.

And here is the Work in Progress including photos of the real aeroplane;

Cheers

1/72nd Tamiya Spitfire Mk.Vb, ER763/ 59, 74 OTU,. Aqir, Palestine 1945;

74 OTU was responsible for Army Co-Operation and Tactical Reconnaissance training for the Middle East based units, hence the addition of an oblique camera port in the fuselage. This aircraft swung on landing and overturned at Petah Tivva on 30.1.45 which is when the reference photos were presumably taken during the recovery;

1/72nd Tamiya Spitfire Mk.Vb, JK792, WR-O, 40 Sqn, SAAF, Italy 1944;

This South African unit was an operational Tactical Reconnaissance Unit serving in N.Africa and later Italy and the subject aircraft has had its previous desert scheme converted by adding Dark Green on top of the Middle Stone;

1/72nd Eduard Spitfire Mk.IX, `Eleanor', WZ-GJ flown by Maj. Garth Jared CO of the 309th FS, 31st FG, USAAF.

Although often depicted as wearing a desert scheme, a reference photo shows it to be wearing the day fighter scheme as worn by many other Spit`s flown by this unit, the mustard coloured patches behind the cockpit represent the gas/chemical reaction paint as applied to many USAAF in the Med ;

DSCF8972_zpsfnav6gbt.jpg

The model was brush painted using a hairy stick and straight from the box apart from the decals which were a mixture of Kagero book decals with national markings from a Hasegawa P-40N kit. This aircraft is often depicted as wearing a desert scheme but here is a photo showing it wearing a grey/green Day Fighter Scheme.

1/72nd Eduard Spitfire Mk.IX, MH660, 1435 Sqn, Brindisi,  Italy March 1944

The only RAF flying Sqn to have a four digit unit number, 1435 Sqn grew out of 1435 Flight on Malta and it moved to Italy which is where MH660 joined the unit in 1944 and New Zealand ace Warren Schrader oftten flew this aircraft. It was lost on on the 7th September 1944 following an engine fire and it crashed into the Adriatic near to the Yugoslavian island of Vis.

Here's my build; the Hasegawa 1/72 Macchi C.202 with markings from the Sky Models sheet representing an aircraft of the 168º Squadriglia 16º Gruppo, 54º Stormo based in Tunisia in early 1943. Colours used were Sovereign Hobbies Colourcoats and are listed in the build thread. A really nice little model that went together without much input from me :lol:

1/72nd Special Hobby Kittyhawk Mk.II, 3 Sqn, RAAF, Italy 1944

Hello Folks, here is a Merlin engined Kittyhawk Mk.II flown by the CO of 3 Sqn, Sqn. Ldr. Brian Eaton with his emblem on the nose which he later applied to his Mustang`s, consisting of the Desert Air Force crest, in this instance emblazoned with the number 3 which was the units `unofficial' insignia. Brush painted as usual using acrylic paints, the chequers on the yellow painted tail were cut from a very old Superscale sheet;
