Tugboats on tracks

What about the ship model specialists in the UK, surely they must do something similar?

I have a cunning plan including some form of resin putty, bandages and some rope like thread. This has nothing to do with the High school special: 1 ripe melon, 1 apple bore, 1 pair of rubber gloves, 1 industrial size jar of Vaseline and a photo of Christine LaGarde :analintruder:

Blimey Julian you don't hang about fella, nice to see one of these being built btw.

Another master piece in the making :)

Dan

Hi there Dan, more interesting to hear how you are doing at the moment. Certainly good to see you on-line mate :yahoo:

He really doesn't does he.....I'm still looking at pictures (and trying to resist the urge to colour them in).

There is an abrupt change in tempo at the moment, with me proceeding at the mind numbing speed of about 10 Friuls per evening :clif: :clif: :clif: :clif: :clif: :clif: :clif:

Me too.....With the T-35 primed and ready for paint, I'll be taking the first few tentative steps with my model tonight. As usual I'll be focussing on the running gear first, this one isn't a gaming model, but it weighs about half a pound so it will still need to be built for strength. I'll take some photos if I achieve anything that actually merits it. :coolio:

only ten I,am dissapointed in you Julian thought you would have them all done by now :coolio::winkgrin:

Andy I,am with you just making a start now some of the running gear done and I have had a bit of a dredge around old shay Beefy and found some stuff I did not think I had at all as I do not usually do German armour

Some figures and fuel drums not sure how I might work this yet but as you get to know me I normally just wing it anyway

That's a very hefty chunk of resin Andy, nice to hear you are starting the build

Notice the suspension springs are a different model to the mid version I am building Keith, probably more differences will become evident as we move along. The maintenance sets are good idea to use for the base/dio.

It's all a bit slow at the moment and not helped at all by the fact I can't find my stash of stiff wire.....The suspension needs the drill & pin treatment, end of. Building it with CA would be sheer folly, while I've been exaggerating the mass of the model somewhat it's still very substantial and the slightest knock would have the running gear straight off the hull sides, so pins it must be. I fully expected this and had the drills out to get started but I can't find the wire anywhere!

Anyhow the lower hull now appears to be mostly free of excess resin, but I need to do some remedial Milliput work before I can give it a shot of primer.....Which I strongly suspect will reveal it's not cleaned up at all. I've got to be a bit careful in a couple of spots as there are a couple of bubbles lurking under a thin skin of resin here and there, but nothing that can't be sorted as far as I can see. I'll get it back out and take some photos in a bit, but at the moment I've got bits of Bf.110 all over my desk, wingy things take up an awful lot of space and have entirely too many sticky-out bits IMHO.

OK.....Confession time, I hadn't really been giving this my full attention and my comments about the suspension are doing Friendship a bit of a disservice.

I'd had a good look at the resin bits, but the white metal was still in the bags.....Reading the discussion about the bogey types above prompted me to get one out of the bag to see what kind I have. Thus I discovered that Friendship have cleverly moulded a little white-metal pin integrally with each bogey:

LWS-Bogeys%20-%2001_zps8weuvnrp.jpg

LWS-Bogeys%20-%2002_zpsju12s90q.jpg

Here's the worst of the bubbles:

TharSheBlows_zpsqhgfzb8k.jpg

This one's shows three more areas that need some attention, another smaller bubble and some rough and damaged areas at the rear lower hull near the prop tunnels, I'll deal with these using Milliput. The third isssue is what appears to be a vent or grille on each side of the hull just below deck level:

ThreeIssues_zpsbeb5vrss.jpg

Unfortunately this has small bubbles in it too and they have broken the surface destroying the pattern. I'm thinking either fill it and drill it or keep my eye open for some suitable etch.....Comments and suggestions would be very welcome, while I'm not exactly a beginner, I'm no expert at multi-media kits either.

I am thinking that a shopping trip for supplies is on the cards.....Some Halfords High Build self-levelling primer/filler might pay dividends for this build, now that I can see it in big'o'vision I've noticed that there are an awful lot more small bubbles than I had first thought. :hmmm:

Anyhow, the Milliput's mixed, I've popped all the bubbles that I can safely pop and I'm about to make the first round of repairs. :coolio:

'Tanky-McBoatface' meets the Milliput:

TankyMeetsMilliput_zps1blw2jjg.jpg

I suspect this won't be the last time.

Cleaning up the bogies is next, I really did Friendship a disservice earlier, the cunning way they are designed should actually make quite a strong little unit. The sprocket, idler and especially the return rollers will still need to be pinned. The white metal track is a little thick, but it is beautifully cast (as is almost everything) and replacing it would be more trouble than it's worth.

Would Mr. Surfacer be a solution for the bubbles Andy? Either that or Mr. Dissolved putty, both fillers work nicely leveling off to a thin coat. The holes toward the stern I would fill and redrill, I'll take a pic and post it here so that you have the size and pattern.

Your LSW would appear to have the same suspension as Keith's model by the way,

:coolio::winkgrin:

I think I have the bubbles covered now Julian, I'll shoot some of that funky primer at the bottom half of it, but I'll probably mask-off from the fender up.....The holes in the rear grill are extremely small and close together in 1/76, not sure I will be able to drill them neatly, but I may have some etch that I can persuade into a reasonable approximation. A couple of conveniently located tyre-fenders will hide many sins.

I'm beginning to think I may be able to build the track units on each side as removeable units, which would be ideal, but also quite tricky to do.....The weak bond of CA may work to my advantage here.

I'm not going to go too mad cleaning up the bogies, firstly it would be a nightmare task and secondly I reckon the miscasts look kind of like heaped sand as they are.....Trick painting and weathering may score more points than file-work here.

As I said in our initial chat, this will be a fairly leisurely build for me, even by my glacial standards. :sleep_1:

PS - Mentally insert a photo here, exactly like the one above, but with Milliput that is now, I hope, rock hard.

19/8 update:

Grab rails, hatches and other fittings being added. Have started assembling some of the figures I will be using. The Friuls progress slowly but add a nice chunky look when fitted

I will probably start on cobbling up the big fender that is fitted to the LWS this weekend, have a game plan for this worked out.

Very funny about the dog ... :poo-poo: lol, and vehicle :Tasty::popcorn:

Thanks Francis, having some fun here. The LWS looks like it was designed by several people who never had a meeting and were tripping on good old Amsterdam Space cake  It's big though and the real thing kept popping up all over the different European theaters.

Model looks great the accent ........

I reckon it needs a little work lol

Kev

Oh come on Kev, doing my best Gruber impersonation here, that and building one of the most unusual amphibians of WWII

"Some dog poop bags" ?

It would stop the officer getting mess on his nice shiny boots LOL.

Being serious Gremlin, it`s a weird sort of vehicle , but likable.

I can see a diorama coming into view along the line.

Simon.

I could fit Heinrich out with a "pooperen scoopfer" but the "people who are intimate with rivets" would go bananas pointing out that the pooper scooper wasn't invented then

The LWS is a very pleasingly weird tracked beast that is good fun to build. The rope fender is a challenge but I'll work something out there :coolio:

Hi Keith, The build is a joy, fit is downright excellent so at the moment I seem to be the "High speed cheerleader". Painting has started up though so I think you and Andy will catch up shortly
