Troy Smith
another one from Etienne that I've not seen before Vickers Wellington XIV (HF357) at Borgo Airbase, Corsica, crashed, from cine film, interesting nose art. https://www.flickr.com/photos/8270787@N07/26430725475/in/photostream https://www.flickr.com/photos/8270787@N07/26974746695/in/album-72157605269786717/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/8270787@N07/26701162820/in/album-72157605269786717/
AndrewCJ50
Wonderful photos thanks! You can see that linen rumpling up like an unmade bed! Andrew
Francis Macnaughton
That's the clearest shot I have ever seen of the inside of the glazed area in the nose - which is to say there is a real need for a definitive shot. Unless anyone knows of a better one?
Ed Russell
According to the RAF Commands web site, HF357 was allocated to 36 Sqn https://www.rafweb.org/Members Pages/Aircraft Serials/Operational Units_001-100.htm 36 Sqn was based in Algeria from June 1943 until September 1944 so a forced landing on Corsica - presumably Trapani-Chirisia airfield which was near the village of Borgo - is quite feasible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._36_Squadron_RAF 1
Super Aereo
Trapani-Chinisia is in Sicily, quite a distance from borgo:  https://www.forgottenairfields.com/airfield-trapani-chinisia-592.html  Borgo in Corsica was an airfield in its own right:  https://www.forgottenairfields.com/airfield-bastia-borgo-1278.html
Ed Russell
Okay, Borgo Rizzo (or Rizza, depending on whose map you use) not Borgo. The caption is not really helpful as it didn't even include the squadron, my main intention for posting.  Quote  The Italians called the airport Trapani–Chinisia after the nearby river Chinisia but the allies used on their planes the name of the nearby village of Borgo Rizzo that was abbreviated on the documents as Borizzo. The official name of the airport was Aeroporto di Trapani-Chinisia and was also named in 1949 after the Italian aviator Livio Bassi.[1]
MilneBay
Is that shadow or is the rudder painted a different colour?
Graham Boak
The rudder is considerably deflected so reflecting less light back at the photographer.
