Aimee'sDad
I shall soon be approaching the point where my SR-71 needs painting and I have a query. I know it's got to be matt black but my question is do I spray it matt black, gloss varnish it, decal it then matt varnish it or can I just spray it gloss black, decal it then matt varnish it? Thanks
colin
Matt black will be easier to spray than gloss, also you can mix the black shades up so you don't get too much of a uniform black to break the finish up and avoid the toy like appearance you can get with single colours. Mike
If I had the stones to build my SR-71, I wouldn't paint it black, but not because my old art teacher told me there's no such thing as BLACK. I'd do it a very dark grey, and use multiple shades to mimic the actual patina of the early RAM paint, and the effect that the heat on the leading edges and other panels had on it. It's a BIG aircraft even at 1:72, and HUUUUUGE at 1:48, so something to interest the eye goes a long way to fooling the viewer into thinking it's real
