Graham T
A couple of quick questions while I work on the 1/32 Revell kit. Was the seat metal or composite? The instructions call for painting cockpit green which suggests that, in Revell's mind at last, it was metal but I'm not sure. Also, would the flare rack have been fitted? Jure Miljevic
Hello, Graham T Which one are you working on, OOB Borough of Lambeth? An equally quick answer would be composite, but let me check on it. What was that stuff anyway, bakelite? Cheers Jure

I found a photo of a Mk II cockpit that JUST catches the front r/h corner of the seat pan which seems to suggest composite (dark colour) with a metal frame (light colour, probably cockpit green). The photo shows no flare rack.
gingerbob
I think "composite" (not Bakelite, as Edgar would be quick to say) is a safe bet, though perhaps slightly less safe if you're doing a VERY early serial. A look at the Pilots Notes, which seems to be an early edition, mentions the parachute flares that were later deleted, and does not mention the signal flares, so no rack is probably the way to go. bob
Jure Miljevic
Hi I am afraid I was too quick with my answer. Take a look on photos on following link: http://www.spitfires.talktalk.net/A7_Specials/Spitfire_MK_IIa.html Restored aircraft may differ from their previous conditions but it seems that original parts have been installed into this one. Of course, P8088 had been used operationally for quite a while, so the seat may have been replaced during her career. I am sorry about confusing the issue even further. Cheers Jure P.S.: Thanks for information about the material, Bob.
JackG
The late Edgar had stated the flare rack was an item intended only for Seafires, and further were double rowed - the single was introduced post war. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/55995-spitfire-seat-colour/page-2 regards, Jack
