EOD & Rusty Bug.

Recommended Posts

This is my entry for the Vignette Group Build,I intend to portray an EOD guy dealing with an IED in a derelict VW Beetle, set in a dusty Iraqi street.......that's the plan anyway!

I've been trying stuff that's new to me,kit bashing & scratch building on a very basic level,& I also used the salt chipping method for the rust effect, which was fun,if a bit messy!......hopefully things will improve with practice.

Anyhow, this is what I stated with & where I've got to so far.

Hi Andrew,

You need to put the IMG info in and your pictures will appear, nice project can't believe your going to blow up a Beatle.

Thanks Ozzy,I'll have another go later.

Don't worry,I'm going to blow up a Beetle, not a Beatle.......wouldn't dare damage or defame any of Liverpool's four finest exports!

Cheers

P1000293_zps0rpvex1u.jpgI'll try & get it in focus next time!

Yeah Levin you're right,it's more like a half sucked lemon drop that's been dropped in the dirt at the moment!

I'll see how the rest of the build progresses & if I've got time,I'll work on it some more.

Cheers

Hi Andrew and welcome to the Vignette GB. I noticed the Specialists and Robots set in a model shop last week. I didn't buy it but thought it looked interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with this project.

Kind regards,

Cheers Stix,

They're good & hopefully they won't tax my figure painting skills,or lack thereof, too much.......very little flesh needed!

Think I might have to do something about the Bug though, not overly happy with the rust,it IS my 1st attempt though M'lud, the fact that I forgot to change it to left hand drive is bugging me too.

May I suggest to look like burned out instead of only rusty?

I found this article http://www.panzer-modell.de/tipps/vignettenbau_2/vb.htm in a german forum/magazine and it look pretty convincing to me.

If you want I could translate the part about the car.

Though he doesn't says much about painting the car more about the surroundings and the details like seats abd wheels but maybe the pics alone help already

Thanks Levin, that burnt out car looks brilliant, don't worry about the translation,Google did it for me.

I think I might start over again with a different vehicle(the Beetle's annoying me) & do it burnt out with the steering wheel on the correct side.

Thanks again for the input

I'll follow with interest

May I ask what car you have in mind and how you made the rust effects on the beetle? Pigments? Paint? Completely different?

Hi Levin.........it's going to be another Beetle,Revell this time so it's the correct scale(1/35 not 1/32)

I created the rust effect by airbrushing various shades of brown, red & rust acrylic paint, but between each colour I used a paint brush to wet the car with water,I then sprinkled salt over it,then when it was dry I would airbrush another colour. Each time I'd end up with layers of different patterns & colours,I then gave it a top coat of yellow to represent the original colour of the car before it became rusty. It was good fun,but as you said,I should've paid more attention to creating a more varied look with some panels not so rusty or a totally different colour entirely. Definitely something I'll try again.

May I also suggest to use bigger patches of the original color as the effect was a bit to subtile on the beetle IMHO

Yeah I will Levin,

I've seen some fantastic examples that others have done,so I'll keep practicing. The next one is going to be mostly browns & blacks as it's going to be totally burnt out, plus the model is of a German vehicle,so it's going to be left hand drive already,no need for me to chop it about too much.

Now if a silly thing called "work" didn't get in the way,I'd make more progress!

Cheers

Nice concept dreadeddrew. A very insightful and constructive conversation happening between you and Levin too.

I like the deflated tires detail. However, if you're going for totally burnt out, do remember the rubber tires would burn off leaving behind only the rims. Also since Iraq is mostly an arid land, it'd be more dusty and less rusty.

"abandoned desert car" threw up lots of interesting results on images.google.com

Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Hi alxzinbox,

Thanks for the comments,I'm having great fun trying out stuff I don't normally do,a far cry from my childhood builds straight OOB. The "lemon drop" wasn't meant to be burnt out, just derelict, that's why it had tires still. I created the flat tires by sanding flat spots then gently melting them whilst being careful not to disfigure the rims. After seeing a link that Levin showed me,I thought I'd try totally burnt out next, but the replacement Bug has some nice detail that I don't want to destroy,so I think it's going to be a more subtle distressed look. That's when I can get round to it that is,I'm struggling to find some momentum, hoping to have pics of some more progress soon.

Cheers

Hi Andrew. I have just been trying to catch up with everyone's vignettes and I was just wondering if there had been any progress with yours?

Kind regards,

Hi Stix,

It's been very gradual progress at the moment,I've got a replacement Beetle for the one I wasn't happy about. I've been doing a bit of kit bashing & scratch building & it's not far off painting,I'm just um-ing & ah-ing as to colour & intensity of rust effect. The EOD guy is partially built & waiting for paint, but I haven't touched the base yet. I'm hoping I'll get a bit of momentum going soon as I don't want to leave it too late & rush it. I haven't thrown in the towell, just having trouble finding the elusive "mojo"........hope to have some pics up soon.

Cheers,

Andrew

Apologies for being away from this for so long, life has a habit of getting in the way!

As I wasn't happy with the previous Bug,I decided to get a replacement, the Revell 1/35 Type 82 staff car,it's better detail & the correct scale. I used a tip I got from a fellow BM'er (sorry, can't remember who,but thanks!) I put a needle in a pin vice & repeatedly scored the panel lines in order to remove the drivers door, bonnet & boot (hood & trunk for our colonial cousins)
