Airfix 1/24 'Car Door' Hawker Typhoon test shot

Recommended Posts

Something wicked, this way comes...

A sneak peak at this stage.

I had hoped, after nailing the bubble top test shot together in 2014 ( http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234959926-airfix-124-hawker-typhoon-on-the-flight-line/?hl=%2B124+%2Bairfix+%2Btyphoon+%2Bthe+%2Bflight+%2Bline ), to have a crack at the car door, which was so plainly evidenced though the parts breakdown, when finally released. Given that my original bubble top thread now has over 71,500 views, I'm sure the car door will be similarly appealing to fans of large scale models.

Happily in the wake of that, the boss (Chris Clifford) decided to entrust Airfix's latest big Tiffie test shot to my tender mercies and the car door project was executed over another somewhat frenetic ten week build schedule.

Finished the Saturday before last, I confess I was very, very happy to have had the chance to navigate this mighty kit a second time. Here's an informal shot on the bench via the iPhone. I'll post 'official' tasters later in the week.

I've always felt that one of the coolest things you can do with a car door Tiffie is wind down one of the windows some 2/3rds, so the starboard door was so treated and winder handles added to the doors (Airfix don't provide them). Mk.1 Productions brass flaps and exposed cannon and recoil springs, the full Airscale cockpit decals suite, Eduard brass throughout the office, HGW belts, Xtradecal markings, Radu Brinzan brass rad mesh and Barracuda resin carb intake rounded out the project.

As before, I had the benefit of direct dialogue with Chris Thomas (who Airfix name as one of the key contributors on the car door release) in settling certain details relating to the markings choice.

I felt the North African scheme would contrast well with the European camo on the bubble top (on display in the Airfix Visitor Centre) and I'm doubly happy that Airfix have confirmed DN323 will also go on show with my earlier Typhoon - a great privilege.

The build will be included in the late summer special issue of Airfix Model World (132 pages!), due out next Thursday August 4.

Happy days

:-)

That looks great, will look out for the mag!

Cheers FF - the 132 page issue of AMW will be a bumper read, so plump up that 'lazy boy' and get the beers in... :-)

What a lovely model, looks fabulous and the scheme looks great. Fantastic work

All the best

Chris

Thanks Chris - 'proper' images to follow later this week via the 5D MkIII... :-)

Wow,..... stunning,..... and you`ve put it in my favourite car door Tiffy scheme too,......superb!!

Cheers

Tony

Thanks Tony.

Yes, it's my favourite car door scheme too. When Chris Clifford asked if I wanted the test shot I said it had to be finished as a 451 Squadron bird. Chris Thomas (who's prepared a great history and period photos piece to go with the build), sent me all his images of DN323 - from an official Hawker photograph immediately prior to being shipped to North Africa to it being returned to a European scheme for return to Britain; hugely useful and the research bug bit to the point I ended up with a reader's card at The National Archives.

The kit's a great foil for the mass of aftermarket out there and although I intended to use white metal undercart legs, stuck with the plastic and reinforced raw spar join, resulting in legs that barely flex at all.

Cheers!

I really really haven't got any more room in the mancave ......what the heck ill just make the cave bigger!!!

 Now that's a practical mind in motion. In truth, one of the things I love about the car door is the unprecedented view into the cockpit - you can go mad in there and it's all on show.

Hope you have fun with yours CD!

Hi Rick - thanks for that. Not a straightforward build in totality but not a difficult one either and in my view, the effort expended is rewarded ten times in enjoying the result of what is still an amazing piece of design by Airfix.

Thanks again.

No window winders? Pah, Airfix can keep it then....!! :P:D

Just kidding , however it's simply impossible to make my mancave bigger so unfortunately I'll have to give this one a miss, like its older sibling, much as I love Tiffies.

That is another supremely lovely model you've built there Steve, simply superb work!

Thanks Keith - sorry you can't give one a home but thanks for the kind nod on this one... :-)

Simply stunning. I've never seen a Tiffie in desert camo before, it looks amazing.

I'll be picking a copy of AMW up for sure, if only for this build!

Daryl.

Thanks for that Daryl!

I'll leave the fascinating story of the desert Typhoons to Chris Thomas in his accompanying article in AMW Thursday after next.

Is it possible to feel "strange urges" at the sight of a model aircraft? :)

God that's nice. God that's sexy!

Your pic on Hyperscale is just straight Tiffie-porn though!

Jonners

Glad it's got you so moist lol! I always wondered what it might be like to be Tiffie fluffer....

Stunning Steve nuff said :worthy:

Cheers B!

Hoofin build!! and just love the desert scheme. You really do need a Hurricane IIC to go with that.

Rather jealous

I have the Trumpy one in my stash itching to start it now after seeing your Tiffy, however the thing is that once the 109e is completed I am doing a 1/.24 Bandai Zero for a group build on another forum, after that the 1/32 HK Mossie. So many builds so little time.

Maybe start before Christmas or early next year. I need to go and have a look at the kit, at least it is near the front of the most expesive loft insulation in the land.

Brendan

Hi Brendan. Busy schedule! Still, you'll get around to it and I look forward to seeing it and what you put out in between.

Wonderful. And goes to further my frustration with being a slow builder!!!

Nick

Cheers Nick. I can't keep up with what I want to build either. What's under the knife at the minute your end?

:goodjob:
