1/48 Eduard Fw 190A-5, Hptm. Egon Mayer, France 1943

Recommended Posts

Well it look as though the Bf 110 will be complete in a few days, so I will put my hand up for the GB. I have provisionally chosen the 1/48 Eduard A-5 but haven't settled on a scheme yet:

09D05CED-8CA9-477D-B104-A7233D0388DA_zps

It won't be scheme A (Nowotny's black double chevron as shown above) so any of the other three is possible:

I am leaning towards this one:

Or this:

As I build at glacier like speed, I will build this one all closed up. AM will be limited (at this stage) an Ultracast seat, maybe Ultracast wheels and an MDC gunsight is all I can think of at the moment.

Hopefully I will be able to break ground early next week.

Nice choice Kent. I like the three choices you have. Personaly I like the last of the three.

O, if you are doing it all closed up. have a good look at the fit, before you glue it. Aspecially the wing root gun panels.

Cheers,

I dont think building this one closed up will speed things up , in fact quite the opposite as many more of the fit issues come to the fore when getting gun cowlings to fit . They will fit but it took me loads of time . satisfying when you do though .

Will be following your build

The quick boost engine cowl will speed things up

Thanks lads,

I will be "borrowing" advice from here and there during the build. I recall the issues from my first build, although it was a while ago, so hopefully your sage warnings will trigger the old memory box!

Welcome back,

Having settled on a scheme and with crap weather for spraying the Bf 110, I thought I would get a start on this one. Borrowing unashamedly from Daz, I set about building the forward gun area. The fuselage was taped and the gun mounts, fire wall and associated were dry dry fitted. The gun feeds were cut from the ammunition cans to clear the upper gun cover. This is where I deviated a bit and actually applied Tamiya Extra Thin to the pieces, setting the forward section of the fuselage. Once this had set up, I attached the upper gun cover and cemented it into place. It does not need to be a "perfect" fit as the real ones weren't but it all matches up reasonably at this stage. A dry fit with the lower wing shows promise as far as alignment is concerned. The rear of the fuselage is not glued so that, in theory, I can prise it apart to insert the cockpit tub. I have done this successfully on a couple of dry runs of the tub alone. Hopefully it will not come back to bight me once the tub is fully assembled and painted .

Speaking of the cockpit, the basics were assembled. The Ultracast seat sat a little low, so a piece of styrene was sourced to act as a pedestal. It is not affixed at the moment:

Hi Kent, great start.

I only noticed that you think that the seat sits to low, but it is at the correct hight. The seat straps were attached just above the seat at the plate behind it and not on top of it. Take a look here how it is supposed to sit.

I know it is from a different build, but I have some pictures in some books that support this.

Thanks for that,

I got confused with the 109 belt placement and the Ultracast seat attachment points were horizontal. I will make the adjustment, thanks for a timely reminder.

Nice start Kent and a goof fit only problem you may have is putting the engine mounts in with th upper cowl in place. It'll be fiddly

I put them in last night and it wasn't too bad, the rear engine plug is now installed and the remainder of the engine just needs to be attached. I may have more difficulty with cowling mounts that extend back to the MG mounts but I may leave them out and rely upon cementing the join closed:

The engine is almost complete. It will be a very basic build and paint as almost zero will be visible once closed up except for the frontal area. Really it is only there to support the prop and the exhausts:

Great stuff Kent. You're certainly right about the visibility in the front of the engine. Once the fan is in place there really isn't much to see. My understanding is that the new kits when released will be simpler. I just hope they sort the thick tail. I built a a8/r2 opened and my first d9 open after that I close things up

I am led to believe it will be the case. I had a eureka moment re the exhaust. I am thinking of simply gluing the four stack ends to the cowling rather than fiddling with alignment. The last A8 was a bugger to get properly aligned. It should end up looking like the QB resin part.

In the kit instructions, Mayer's aircraft appears to be the only one with outer armament. I am thinking MG FF? That would be great as I found a Master Barrel A2-A5 set floating in the stash last night. MG 17 tips, MG FF barrels, MG 151 barrels and pitot.

Thoughts?

Thanks one and all,

I continue the build phase, preparing sub assemblies to minimise time painting. The complete engine has been attached to the engine mounts with a good dose of prayer and crossed fingers to get the alignment correct:

6BE5DFBA-B116-4E8E-9D64-0E32516EBBB7_zps

I then set about the much maligned cowling assembly. Dry fit showed promise and again I muttered some words to a significant deity. First the central upper was aligned and secured, then each side in turn. I use Tamiya Extra Thin in small doses and adjusted where I saw fit, testing against the fuselage and assembled engine. When I was happy, I set the last two ring pieces and then gave everything a swipe with Mr Cement S ( thanks to Spencer Pollard and his The Kit Box blog for the tip on different glues):

A dry fit with shows promise. It will line up better once I install the cockpit assembly and close the fuselage up. I then sprayed the engine MM Flat Black and set it aside:

48B64CB6-4143-4C33-9CA1-B80AE0020383_zps

I then turned my attention to the wings. Eduard supply but don't tell you about pieces I3/4 which are the wing root cannon lower assemblies to use if you are going to close the wing root cannon. I stole the idea from someone else, whose recent build escapes me, so I cannot take credit. Looking at the pieces, they have supports for the covers to assist in placing them. I assume they will hold the covers in the correct position once you have chain drilled the upper wings:

That's all for now.
