So the big Airfix kit had the right codes but the wrong serial

the shape and size of the codes on P3166 VY-Q and P3854 VY-Q are different.

P3166 are taller, and the Q has square corners.   The 1/24th Airfix kit has code style correct for P3854 BTW.

There are several high quality shots of P3166 and P3854 here

Edit: Suggestions that OK1 was actually N2520. From photos looks metal winged.

N2426 last fabric wing built (except for the batch in 1940)

N2520 TOC 26 October 1939, Pilot date 1 December, delivered 3 December, 27 MU no date, 213 Sqn 29 March? 1940, Station Flight Northolt 31 May? 1940, 5? MU 10 June 1940, Station Flight Northolt 18 June 1940, Station Flight Sd? Carney? 19 December 1940, 3 SFTS 26 January 1941, Cat E 23 May 1944.

11 Group HQ was at Uxbridge N 51° 34' W 0° 28.5', Northolt Airfield N 51° 33' W 0° 23' for those who lack a detailed map of the London area and prefer target co-ordinates.

That would be South Cerny, which was the home of 23 Group Communications Flight as well, which ties in nicely with Park's post BoB appointment

The one I've not been able to find is a decent hi-res copy of the one on the cover and title page of Fighter Squadron at War.  IWM has a slightly fuzzy copy, but it would be interesting to see a modern verison

P3760, CFF 11 June 1940, SOC 19 August 1940

Air Britain - 17 Missing, presumed shot down by Bf110 Nr Ofordness 11.8.40

this has 3 possible fits with 17 Squadron from Air Britain,

P3760, P3780, P3788.  On a lower resolution's, the P37 is clear, and the next two could be 80 or 88,

hard to tell what the last two digits are, but on a full page blow up (open it in a new tab) this looks to be P376*

Nothing else P376* apart from P3760 fits.

Have we got another photo serial tie up?   Do I need to get out more?

P3757, 1 RCAF Sqn 26 June 1940

and another photo  :yahoo:

This option is on this sheet

https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X72225

though when it was done this would have been assumed to be metal wing.......

also on the sheet there is

Serial unknown LE-T 242d;
P3757 YO-G 401 (City of Westmount) Sqn RCAF RAF Croydon;
P3021 TM-N 504

find the serials, and you can do V7203, LE-T, and you could probably modify the N of TM-N to a V to do P3774

Wow, what an interesting thread.  Too bad Mr. Molson didn't tip over P3757 a little more so we could see the gun ports.  But I guess after this thread, I'll be using Airfix to build YO-G and not Arma.

Thanks for the education guys!

What a fantastic series of photos! Thanks for providing the link. I see he has similarly interesting photos of Hurricanes in other squadrons.

Hallo there,

Am getting very much into fabric winged hurricanes  and in particular this batch of 50 late hurticanes with fabric wings.

However, having looked at pics of YB F, and comments about the later hurricanes having the wing centre section being metal as standard  does thus mean that these last 50 fabric wing a/c had the later hexagonal gun bay hatches  or the original rectangular ones of the original  fabric wings? The reason I ask is the YBF -if it is fabric winged- looks to have the later style gunbay hatches from what I can see.

Was the fabric wing just thd bit outbard if the gunbays or was it the whole wing,?

Grateful for any thoughts.

Ralph

the Hurricanes from this batch were standard fuselages, the panel that was fabric covered in the centre section was at the rear on early Hurricanes,

but this was soon changed to metal.

the  actual fabric wing was metal covered to the outer edge of the gunbay, as was the leading edge, though this was then covered in fabric.  The outer wing joins onto the centre section outside the UC legs, that is what the cover strip is for.

For modelling purposes,  as you are using the 72nd Airfix kit, for one of these P****/V****  fabric wing,  you just need to fill the fabric at area at the wing roots,  behind the gun bays,  add the later style canopy, a ES/6 Rotol prop and the extra hatch on the starboard side.   I'd change the wheels, as the Airfix are a bit too big, but they are 4 spoke.

I'll add some more photos when i find them.

This shows what is metal in the fabric wing

1024px-Royal_Air_Force_Training_Command,

you can see the metal leading edges stripped of fabric.
