That looks brilliant!

Thanks Steve. Loving your PzH2000, btw

After a bit of a break, I’ve collected some references & set to work on the T50 turret in earnest.

I’m lucky (?) to have had the foresight to do a walk around of my vehicle whilst deployed. These pics captured a lot of details & will really help with the painting.

Even have some top views & my personal weapon.

The turret design was solid.

I’ve since added some additional detail & hollowed it out to reduce mass & resin.

The test print revealed some issues with the base design, plus some opportunities to optimise things.

spacer.png

The visiblocks will likely be 3D printed clear resin, about 2.5mm thick. The hatch cover will be closed, so the interior detail just has to convey the impression that the turret isn’t empty.

On the slicer:

Great thing about resin prints is that they take no time at all.

Here’s the print for the v2 of the T50 turret, pictured alongside a resin cast of my scratch built turret from 2016.

Version 3 of the turret with the lifting eyes & hinge details added, plus some bolts etc.

spacer.png

The hatch cover is a difficult shape & needs more work.

spacer.png

Here's v3 alongside v1. Happy with the design, need to work on the supports.

spacer.png

On the hull with a representative F88SA2. If I put the rifle on, it’ll have to be a straight F88 with night aiming device.

A concerted effort to resolve the turret hatch cover was successful. What a nightmare.

spacer.png

The turret design has evolved significantly this week.

One the hull.

spacer.png

Just need to refine the visiblocks.

The visiblocks are identical around the turret, so only had to model one & clone it.

Pretty happy with how it looks on the hull.

Have to model the gunnery flag holder on the turret rear lifting eye.

Now time to finish the driver’s hatch.

Thanks for looking in.

Been on a bit of a printing spree with different versions of the T50 turret.

spacer.png

The original intent was to print the visiblocks in clear resin & slot them into the turret. After a bit of thinking, I updated the design to include visiblocks into the turret proper. Changes things from a fit problem to a masking problem.

spacer.png

I’ll see how translucent green resin prints.

spacer.png

Looks pretty promising so far!

Part of the journey has been getting a new resin printer up & running.

I connected the bottom length of 16 track links into a single run

Inside view:

And with the 1.2mm metal tubing I’ll be using to mimic the track pins.

I wanted to see how longer items printed in resin. After positioning the track shroud on the build plate on the slicer, it looked something like this.

A little bit later.

spacer.png

Straight af.

spacer.png

Pretty happy. We’ll see if I can repeat it for the RHS shroud.

Thanks for looking in.

In my opinion a good result. I thought it would take much longer.

Yeah, resin is a lot quicker. The volume is immaterial, only the number of layers count. Hoping to move on to some short lengths of track, the trim vane, & roadwheels, next.

  • 3 weeks later...

After playing with orientation & layer height, I reckon I’ve got an acceptable turret.

While it was printing, drying, & curing, I drew up the interior & exterior masks for the visiblocks. These were then cut via laser cutter.

spacer.png

Test fit on the turret.

spacer.png

Mucked about with some paint in an endeavour to get a motivational endorphin high/illusion of progress.

I used SMS RAF Sky for the interior sea foam green.

spacer.png

Then SMS camouflage brown, camouflage green, camouflage black, & insignia white.

spacer.png

Masks for the Charlie Company chevron were laser cut, too.

Thanks for looking in.

Great work I built the Verlinden 1:16th M113 for Military Modeling Magazine when it came out back in the 1990's Took ages to build and so much cleaning up of the resin cast parts.

I also started to scratch build a 1:24 scale model that's not been touched for 25 years I must get it out again.

I've reached the point in life where I'm deliberately ceasing to embrace the new tech. For my dear old mum it was the 'micowave' which she even refused to pronounce properly and for me its D3 Painting.

That said, it's fascinating to watch you doing such amazing stuff with it. Maybe you will persuade me... Hahahahahaha!

I had that edition of MM for many, many years! Thanks for dropping by to comment. 1:24 is a better “large” scale for military models than 1:16, IMO. That said, I’m stuck with 1:16 for my Australian Army collection.

I’m the guy on the left who’s not looking too happy with the world. That command gig is my inspiration for this build.

I hear you. We all have our limits. Learning CAD was my pandemic project.

I refer to what I’m doing as “scratch printing” - this model started as a blank file. 100% of the drawing & design is my work, as is transitioning the design to manufacture. There’s a lot of time invested in the design.

It’s akin to designing & producing a single edition model kit, then building & painting it.

Upside - I build whatever I want, in my preferred scale.
Downside - any errors in detail or fit are 100% my fault!

Now that the new resin printer is dialled in, thought I’d have another bash at the front hull in another material.

spacer.png

450 grams of resin! The gun depression rail looks a bit wonky, but that’s fixable.

spacer.png

Hasn't yet been washed & cured yet, but couldn’t resist placing the turret on it.

Ran a test print on the rear of the hull. Let’s just say I need to tweak the model.

spacer.png

Thought that there could be some issues, but not to that extent.

In parallel, the major markings were sketched up.

spacer.png

Onto the laser cutter.

spacer.png

Looking good. I may redo them with reference cuts to facilitate alignment on the physical model.

spacer.png

I need to sort out the tiger’s head, deployment Christmas tree, buoyancy marks, & roadworthy reflective marks, each of which have differing degrees of difficulty.

Thanks for looking in.

Since the last update I’ve been mating the front & rear hull, plus experimenting with the painting.

The clear resin for the turret episcopes seems to have worked okay.

spacer.png

Though the proper turret will be an improvement.

spacer.png

Turns out the 31 stencil is about 10% too large, so I’ll recut & repaint that.

I’ve been working on the running gear & some rough painting.

spacer.png

A lot of spare parts are CARC green, with the outer wheels repainted camouflage green when the opportunity presented itself.

spacer.png

Dry fit looks good.

spacer.png

Started the front glacis camouflage & some of the detail parts.

Decided that laying out the camouflage scheme would be a bit easier if I could sketch it out on drawings. Luckily, designing the whole thing in CAD meant I could generate drawings!

spacer.png

I’ll use my references to join the various views up.

Meanwhile, painting continues.

spacer.png

Only rough at this stage. Will refine & tighten up progressively.

spacer.png

The mask for the Charlie Company tactical marking - aka spinning V or chevron - is visible here.

Thanks for looking in.
