1/16 T50 turret (ANZAC M113A1)

Started a 1/16 scratch build of the Cadillac Gage '34" turret' (aka T50) today, using the information from a visit to the Australian War Memorial Annex and obtained online from Armorama:

1/1:

With the correctly scaled spacer.

Very rough at the moment. Depending on how this part goes, I'll build my car (APC) from East Timor, 1999, from the Mech Battalion.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Sketching out the commander's hatch at the moment, the bullet 'splash' ring, as well as building the spacer ring that lifts the turret about 10cm/4" above the turret roof.

The turret itself will have a recess for a rare-earth magnet.

I like the work you have done on the turret. It's looking good.

However there seems to be something wrong with the proportions or the location of the cargo hatch in the hull top. As it stands it looks like you couldn't open the cargo hatch with the turret in place.

Gordon, you're dead right. The location of the cargo hatch is wrong on the base kit. I verified the measurements on the 1/1 example and will move the hatch rearward.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Great pic!

Mine will be a later vintage - by about 1999!

Thanks to an almost criminal underinvestment in armoured vehicles after Vietnam, there aren't a lot of differences!

Well, the first attempt at building a mantlet from flat parts & bending them to shape was a bit of a fail.

The second, from .50 cal (1/2" or 12.7mm) tubing worked a little better. Considering it'll be under a weather boot, it'll work. Those Aber barrels look lovely!

Friction mounted in the turret itself.

And with the start of the commander's hatch.

Not terrible.

So, picked up the HobbyBoss M706 to plagiarise the turret hatch. Was impressed/surprised by the size difference (& how closely it scales with my efforts, TBH)

Decided to rework the splash ring that surrounds the commander's hatch, moving from .020 x .020 (0.5mm) to .030 x .030 (0.75mm). Also, instead of using multiple pieces, I'll fashion it from one bit, bending it around some pins drilled into the turret roof:

I've also started to open up the viewing episcopes, & adding weld beads.

Real life has been brutal this week, seriously hampering progress on the T50.

Take three on the commander's hatch seems to be working well, thanks in part to HobbyBoss providing a three dimensional reference. Also, have started hacking up a CD case for the episcopes. Will paint the inside of the turret sea foam green so that the correct shade is visible through the epis themselves.

And a side view...only another four facets to go until the rough shape of the hatch is complete.

(Oh, the gap at the bottom of the spacer is intentional.)

All comments welcome, as always.

I had forgotten all about these things. We had several at Robertson during the mid 90's. I will have a hunt through my photos and see if I have any pictures.

Nice scratch build.

No flashbacks, I hope?

Yeah, I was part of the Battalion move at the end of 1998. My car was a rebuild, so all the good mods had been removed.

Any pics certainly appreciated.

Probably sold all the good stuff to buy more bling for the ASLAV's.

I have no fond memories of the buckets. If they weren't broken down then they were having the tracks put back on them.

Not a huge fan of the combat roller skate.

I gained a lot of respect for the capabilities (mobility-wise) of the 113 in the mountains of East Timor.

Almost done on the hatch. Green stuff makes it look messier than it is.

Getting closer to finishing the basic turret...

Got some 3D printed wheels from Shapeways, plus some other bits & bobs, too.

A long, long way to go. Any comments & corrections welcome.
