I think this is because the wel well is painted the same as the cockpit (RLM66 Schwarzgrau / Black Grey), while on the real thing it's the rather lighter RLM02 GrĂ¼ngrau / Green Grey).

Cheers,

Andre

Yeah, as I said to Dazdot, my plan was to lighten it more with dry-brushing and it is actually lighter when compared to the cockpit side-by-side but I didn't do it enough! Oh well. :banghead::winkgrin:

Kind regards,

Stix

Edit: Thinking about it - there's no reason why I can't dry-brush the wheel wells a lighter grey at the weekend, seeing as I haven't done any other painting yet! It will be easy enough to repaint he machine guns after!

Hi Stix!

It's always a real pleasure to see your very clean and precise work developing! I'm also stunned by your efficiency and speed while not sacrificing quality and detail! Very well done, but that is simply to be expected from you :)

Also, thanks for the useful pointers to the kit's issues. I have this kit in its F-8 boxing (ground attack version) and will build it with Eduard's PE set which includes flaps and all. It's just one of the eight or nine FW 190 kits I have in the stash...

Looking forward to more progress!

Cheers

It sure looks better than mine. Needed two coats of primer to cover all my fumbling.

Going well so keep it rolling like that.

Hi Jaime. Thank you, as always, for your very kind comments. Despite the issues with the kit I was able to get quite a bit done last weekend and I'm hoping to get a fair bit of the painting done this weekend........I have still got quite a bit to do on my stuff in the Vignette GB and it's not long until the MTO GB starts...........I've got 3 builds planned for that! :frantic:

I will look out for your 'enhanced' version with the Eduard PE!!

Great job getting her together Stix!

Thank you Steve - it was a bit of a battle at times! :fight:

Nice progress. I will keep this one in my mind for when I build mine.

Cheers,

Thank you Arnold - it is basically a good kit hiding under some 'interesting' flaws.

It sure looks better than mine. Needed two coats of primer to cover all my fumbling.

Going well so keep it rolling like that.

Hi PattheCat and thank you for your comments.

Well it's almost the weekend! :yahoo:

Good job Stix,

Take a well deserved bow and based on that performance you are ready for an Eduard 190!

Regards,

Hi Kent. Thank you very much for your kind comments - I will have to check out Eduard's 190s then!

You're doing a great job Stix.

Rob

Hi Rob. Thank you too for your kind comment.

I have done more work on this project and as soon as I get chance I will post a progress report.

Time for an update of the weekend's modelling.

First off - I realised last Sunday evening (17th) that, even after all the advice about the redundant access panel on the starboard side of the tail fin, I'd forgotten to fill in the panel lines and had already assembled the aircraft - it would have been easier to fill and clean up the area before the aircraft was assembled!

So this was my first job on Saturday morning - this is what the fin looked like before:

27873095214_cac96568d6_c.jpg

.....and this was after some filler and a bit of a tidy up:

27873949263_58738641ae_c.jpg

Last Thursday Mrs PlaStix and I went to Brum and I was able to pick up these RLM colours from the model shops there:

28457371936_df3b2620ec_c.jpg

Troy had very kindly mentioned that these would be the most suitable for this aircraft. Also, while in Brum, I managed to pick up one of the new Eduard 1/72 Spitfires from the Ian Allen shop - I got the ProfiPACK version and it does look very nice!

Next job was to try and correct the too dark shade of grey in the wheel wells - before:

28206312070_3b73b34ab2_c.jpg

.....and after dry-brushing with 240 - RLM 02 Grau Matt:

28457356226_b6236dca31_c.jpg

The difference is quite subtle in the photos but more noticeable in real life.

Next - in my quest to get onto the painting - I had already realised that I wanted to have as much in place on the aircraft before I started - this included wanting the front cowl attached as the paintwork carries on over it. The only problem is that - to attach the front cowling the way Airfix has designed it means also attaching the prop and spinner. I did want the prop to be able to turn once in place so this was my solution -

First off I added a small section of round sprue to the back of the part which goes through the hole that the prop and spinner are eventually going to be glued to - bottom left:

28489653655_d0873ecc77_c.jpg

This part would just fall out of place if it's not glued to the prop and spinner. The bit of round sprue means the back of the part now lines up level with the back of the cowl piece:

27873921663_e0d9fde574_c.jpg

The small rectangular piece was cut from one of the flat sections on the sprue and this was only glued on to the edges of the back of the front cowl piece so that the part (which will be glued to the prop and spinner) can still rotate, but won't fall out inside the fuselage before being attached to the prop and spinner:

28206286520_bb783d889a_c.jpg

So here is the part held in place but so it can still turn:

28384440602_cde5aea4ed_c.jpg

....so now I can add the prop and spinner after the painting is completed.

Here is the front cowl section glued in place:

28464757236_7c53404d2d_c.jpg

While waiting for some of the stuff above to set and dry I did some work on some of the other parts that will be attached later. First off I had read that the undercarriage legs are a little too long meaning the model sits a little high at the front. Apparently Airfix had made them as if there was no weight on them - so uncompressed. My solution was to cut away the thinner section just below the thicker section and through the scissor link. I then drilled out the thicker section to a depth of 2mm:

27880229304_b7e4fa0abf_c.jpg

The thinner sections were then glued back in place - but in the holes - and the scissor links remodelled:

28484862326_0063cc1564_c.jpg

I did wonder about correcting the bottom join on the scissor links, where they attach to the legs, but I was concerned about making the legs too weak. My other concern is that, having shortened the legs there isn't a lot of wheel below the fairings - but we'll see what it looks like when glued together.

I also wanted to test Humbrol's 247 - RLM 76 - Lichtblau Matt - before painting the actual aircraft with it, so I thought I could do this on the drop tank. Before applying the RLM 76 I glued the tank together (did a lot of cleaning up and re-scribing of panel lines!) and did some pre-shading using Revell's Anthracite:

28411230692_d6d802c4c3_c.jpg

Also while waiting for other stuff to dry I painted more of the smaller parts that will be attached later:

28516526135_276949729e_c.jpg

The photo below shows the drop tank with it's first coat of thinned (with water) RLM 76 - applied with a flat brush and the landing gear legs glued to the fairings:

28411214742_0ec369cf11_c.jpg

One of the things I was waiting for to dry was the spiral on the spinner. The spinner had already been painted and given a coat of Pledge (newish version of Klear) and I wanted to try and get this decal on reasonably early so I would know whether I was going to have to resort to painting it - I had heard that these spiral decals can be tricky to apply. I began by cutting away as much of the carrier film on either side of the actual spiral as I could. Then I put the decal into very hot water. While in the water it separated from the backing paper really quickly - before I was ready - so I had to rescue it with tweezers when, of course, it all curled back on itself! I draped the decal over the spinner anyway and then carefully used a cocktail stick to untangle it. I had already warned Mrs PlaStix that there may be some bad language during this process. Luckily I was able to untangle the decal without breaking it and, using water and the cocktail stick, got it roughly into place. Then I gave it a soaking of Humbrol's Decalfix. Having left this in place for about an hour it was settling really well. I then cut the decal where it went over the cutouts (where the props protrude through the spinner) and applied more Decalfix. Finally once it was all set I gave it all another coat of Pledge. No bad language at any stage of the process and this was the result:

28233168880_226cb2c3db_c.jpg

I am reasonably happy with that!

I also began to paint the pre-shading on the undersides of the aircraft but ran out of time before getting any photos.

More next weekend.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hi Stix!

Superb detail work and excellent tips, especially on the prop spinner and gear legs! This build is progressing neatly, with your trademark attention to detail!

Very well done!

It's great you bought the Profipack FW190 from Eduard. I have the Royal Class boxing, with four kits inside, plus PE interior details and flaps, resin wheels and 12 schemes to choose from. It's really a superb kit! I also bought the BIG SIN boxing, containing the resin cockpit, engine and cannons, as I want to super detail one of the kits.

Cheers

Hi Jaime. Thank you too, as always, for your very (too) kind comments.

Sorry for the confusion, it wasn't the Fw190 ProfiPACK that I got, but rather the new 1/72 Mk.IXc Spitfire ProfiPACK. I am planning on getting the Eduard 1/72 Fw190 ProfiPACK at some point though!

Your Royal Class and BIG SIN boxings do sound wonderful and I will look forward to following your super detail builds at some point in the future.

Kind regards,

It was my confusion, Stix. Sorry about that! Anyway, the new Spit Mk IX from Eduard is also a superb kit.I bought the Profipack plus two overtrees, the additional interior PE frets for the overtrees, one resin cockpit and external PE frets for the three kits. Unfortunately, I forgot that the Profipack only comes with stencils and roundels for one kit and now I'll have to order the two additional stencil sets and a sheet of roundels at my LHS.

Cheers

looking good.

one small point, Luftwaffe tyres are dark grey, not the usual tyre 'black'

not the best colour pic, but shows the tyre colour well, and the wheel hubs are glossy black as well (hunting for this reminded me of that!)

9%2BFocke-Wulf%2BFw%2B190%2Blong-range%2

AFAIK this is pretty standard for Luftwaffe wheel/tyres, like this

12%2BMesserschmitt%2BBf%2B109%2Bfighter%

more WW2 colour here http://thirdreichcolorpictures.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Aircrafts

in some shots of the Bf110 and He111, plus more Bf109s you can see clearly the black hub, grey tyre combo.

Not sure if your prop blades are black, or black green, but they should be RLM 70 black-green, this was standard as well.

Hi Troy and thank you. Thank you too for the very useful (as always!) information about the tires and hubs. I'll get them corrected at the weekend.

I did the prop with your recommendation- RLM 70 - Humbrol 241 - I think the light in our kitchen makes the colour look too dark in the photos.

Just catching up Stix. She's looking great. Love that spinner!!! :goodjob:

Thank you Nigel.

Nice work Stix,

I still marvel how you guys work in 1/72... too small for me now!

Regards,

Hi Kent and thank you. I can understand what you mean but it's sometimes nice not to have such a large area to work in.

This weekend I decided to put a bit more time in on one of my Vignette GB projects so I only got a few bits and pieces done on this project.

First off I got the spinner and prop parts fixed together:

28574555491_a24ed8f7de_c.jpg

Then, following Troy's advice, I repainted the wheel hubs and tires better colours - they still need weathering:

28036124944_7b654f0e4a_c.jpg

I also put a second coat of paint on the areas I had painted last week. I think the drop tank requires another thin coat.

Then I finished off the pre-shading on the aircraft itself:

28546303702_ee3cbfc2b0_c.jpg

28653193985_2d0937511b_c.jpg

This was done with thinned Revell's Anthracite applied with a fine brush.

More next weekend.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Hi Jaime and thank you very much for your kind comments. The grey I used on the tires was Revell's Gunship Grey. It was about the closest I had to a suitable colour. I have since put an Anthracite wash over the tires to pull out the limited/soft detail.

Love the pre shading stix nice work

Thank you Daz.

Nice work,

The touch ups look good.

Regards,

Thank you very much Kent.

I'm looking forward to the weekend now when I hope to get some proper paint on the aircraft.
