Vought V-173 "Flying Pancake" (Special Hobby 1:48)

Recommended Posts

Hi gents!

Here I'll try to build V-173 at 1:48 scale from Special Hobby.

That's well known and as far as I know ultimate kit of this plane at 48 scale.

My build was started at May 2016.

I'll try to demonstrate some stages and current state in my next posts.

  • Very inspirational build here at britmodeller (to my great regret, unfinished) by Jean Pierre Culis-Fery

PDFs:

Also, when gathering information about V-173, I got in touch with Mr. Richard Guthrie (ex, V-173 restoration project manager) and Mr. Roger Stites (web-master of Vought Heritage) and they kindly shared some rare photos of V-173 (mostly cockpit and details) and gave permission for their publication.

Pardon my probably strange English, 'couse it's not my native language.

I've got the KH XF5U-1 kit, and might even have this one too, thinking back on it - my memory really is shocking! I'll be looking forward to seeing what you plan on doing with it :)

Hi, Mike! XF5U-1 is next box on my table queue. I plan to build both Zimmerman planes.

I have to aplogise for some delay and now here is some pictures/comments.

I'll try to fix the situation.

First of all few words about kit.

It's good enogh comparing to other shortrans.

Main issues from my point of view is:

1. Strange surface texture of "big parts"

2. Some fitting problems

3. Entirely fictional cockpit

So the main objectives of this project is:

1. Try to recreate the cockpit (nicly visible through the glazing)

2. Try to carefully assembly all the rest

3. Try to paint it yllow (always got a problems with this color)

OOB cockpit assembled on the tape

Richard, thanks!

Pilot's seat. Plastic chair has little in common with the original. So I had to do it myself from tamiya epoxy putty.

Structure around the seat made from evergreen plastic rods and sheet

Do you have any pictures of how you fixed that awful lower glazing fit?

Yep.

Here it is.

1. Initial state (some gaps, big step between lower part of fuselage and glazing):

lower-glazing-01_zpsrnntx2rj.jpg

2. Fitting

Step 1 - added some transverse V-angle for lower fuselage part (glued plastic that pulls together the edges of the fuselage)

Step 2 - added some plastic by both sides for eliminating gaps

Step 3 - added the lower frame

After that - sanding

Result - much lower step at bottom, and acceptable fitting on the sides

3. Current state after rough puttying

Thanks for that, it could prove to be very helpful.

You are welcome, Martin!

Hi Sasha -

Since I have this same kit in my stash I REALLY appreciate not only the build, but the research you provided as well. I really enjoy getting to know each aircraft prior to building them, and researching all the parts and details I can add. You've been really helpful to all of us that have this kit. And all these extra details you are adding are really an inspiration to me. I'm not nearly as good as you are, but you've given me the kick in the pants to get this kit out and start working on it. Who knows, maybe I'll break out the camera and create my very first work here.

Thanks mate, appreciate your help!

Thom

Martin, Nigel, Thom, thank you all for your worm words and support.

Thom, special thanks for the evaluation of my efforts to find the information. I'll be very glad if it will help not only to me. By the way - what camera you going to break?

And back to the build now.

Made several attempts to scratchbuild pedal unit (not very successfull). Then I realized, that I have some amount of half-staf in my model box. After that work goes pretty faster.
