Tamiya Tiger 1 Mid Production w/Atak Zimmerit and others

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Just a placeholder here for now, got myself a 1/35 scale Tiger 1 with a set of Atak Zimmerit and Friul Tracks. Also got a collection of spares that I shall 'borrow' off my ol' man!

I'll hopefully get some photos up of the kit tomorrow but as for the accessories they're floating somewhere in the big red mass of the Royal Mail :mental:

As for colour schemes it'll be in a Dunkelgelb base with Dunkelgrun streaks that was floating around Russia somewhere after Kursk, maybe i'll through in some red to keep it interesting.

In terms of experience however it'll be the second time I've used the friul yet the first time with Atak so break out the superglue! It'll also be the first time I've done a tank with a camouflage scheme other than olive drab or panzer grey so it will be interesting practising the German Schemes!

Oh and this is my first group build so let's hope for the best!

Thanks Guys!

I have the same in the stash so I'll be looking forward to seeing the build.

As for the Zimmerit try tacking it in place with Pritt Stick and then using CA glue to hold it all fast.

Looking forward to seeing this one progress. Always interesting to see more Tiger 1s. I'll be interested to see the Zimmerit going on. I usually try to by any tanks with it molded on rather than use the add on stuff. And good luck in your first GB!

I'm in for this. I last built a Tamiya Tiger 40 years ago! :o I'm sure this will be a lot more accurate than my childhood one, but they all look pretty fantastic in 1/35th.

It' was my first group build too; good luck :)

Best regards

Hope the AM stuff arrives soon, sounds good.

'friul' ? Is that metal track?

That is indeed! I usually pick these as they tend to be the 'go-to' option for most and I like the fact that you get more than you need so you can make up spare tracks later if you so wish.

I have the same in the stash so I'll be looking forward to seeing the build.

Thats a superb idea! I'll definitely be giving that a go when the AM arrives, that makes applying the zimmerit seem a whole lot less scary. Thank you very much!

Well AM or not i'm gonna get cracking today. I've consulted the Atak website to see that the zimmerit offers replacement parts for the mantlet, muzzle if you so wish to canvas cover it and various ports etc. so if anything I can definitely begin the lower hull today and get my head around the German over-engineering.

However before I start here are some pictures of the sprues still bagged for anyone interested. In the usual Tamiya fashion there are two sprues for the running gear, a sprue full of the finer aspects of the kit, one for the larger turret parts, engine deck etc. and in this case 2 sprues of track for those wanting to link and length it. Not to mention that free flowing hull piece that i find amazing on most occasions that it has survived!

Huh, iPhone may be my newest choice for camera yet...

Thanks guys!

Right, the running gear is complete! For now... I still need to mount everything on kebab sticks or toothpicks in preparation for painting.

As for everything else, I'll have to consult various instruction steps and the Atak website for what can and can't be done in terms of ease of zimmerit application on the rear end.

Unfortunately the postie came and went without stopping today so no AM just yet...

Moving on though, here's the beast as she stands now

Looking rather like an OCD PanzerWreck we can see here that the wheels are pretty much there, just need mounting, the hull itself has had the rear plate fitted in but thats it so far

13530236_1238818756158270_1565796915_n.j

Here's a close up of the exploded wheel view, I've decided to put all the wheels on even though I did have the option of leaving the front one off but that didn't look right for me so here's some more work for myself!

Thanks guys!

Hey Guys!

I have no idea what happened with the photos :mental:

So without further ado here they are! Again! This time using good ol' photobucket:

Whilst not all of the photos, I would of thought that would of been a little picture heavy. I have here the box, its contents and finally the OCD panzerwreck I presented earlier. With still no sign of any AM progress has been a little slow however, only just today the engine grills arrived from Eduard so I'll get some shots of them up ASAP

Thanks guys!

And when I say ASAP here we are:

Whilst not exactly Tiger 1 Grills they are the same thing and surprisingly a whole quid cheaper off hannants so count me in! Still, with no zimmerit i can't really crack on.. so just going to have to hope Royal mail sort themselves out

  • 2 weeks later...

Right! Progress has been made!! Managed to get the rear plate of the Tiger pretty much done without a fuss. It was a pretty easy part of the build bar the exhausts of which the guard at the top was slightly fiddly. The zimmerit went on relatively well after I sliced along the thin resin sheet that held everything in place. Using Dads203's very well thought of idea to use Pritt Stick to allow tack for the zimmerit to be manoeuvred, only for thin CA glue to be placed around the edges to secure the resin sheet. I tried the suggested on the box technique for the front glacis and although more of a fiddle, I made that work too. But for now the easiest way was Dads idea. Hope you like the progress guys!

Yup! I know.. Stuck the exhaust guards on so wish me luck painting the exhausts themselves... Though I have bought some armour books such as Tankart 1,2 and 3 and Tankart 3 offers a lot of tips on painting rusted guards etc.

Anyway, updates will be here ASAP!

Right, another updates here and i've got some of the zimmerit on the front glacis. I've also fitted the engine deck and hull roof. I've also fitted the photo etch engine grills but I've left the cables off due to ease of painting. My next intentions are to begin the turret but here's the tiger so far!

Nice to see this one under way Sam and I can imagine that adding those sheets of Zimmerit can be pretty satisfying

Cliff

It strangely is actually! The zimmerit is definitely bringing the tank to life! :D

The zimmerit looks superb. I've never seen it done before so quite a revelation :)

This is coming together quickly now :thumbsup2:

Thanks for all the comments guys! I'm glad you like her! :D

Well today I pressed ahead big time! I got the construction done and I had the whole thing painted. So without a massive tall block of text and a spamming of photos i'll caption/narrate everything :-)

Right, with the above photos in my rather ashamedly filthy spray-booth  I have the Tiger completely finished here and without the lower glacis zimmerit on that I hadn't realised that I had left off until I actually had a go at pre-shading the thing... :bangin:

But as I said, I had a go at pre-shading the tank and it went... alright it looked well and like how it should to me so I squirted it with dunkelgelb as shown:

So! That's it, I have sprayed the dark green but the weather turned a bit and its gone dull so I'll have to wait till I'm off work next week to show piccies and do some more work. But for now she's been painted in her camo and I'm relatively happy with her. I did leave off the zimmerit vision port on the left hand side of the turret however as it pinged off when I cut it off the resin block! But i'll probably paint it red oxide primer to show either zimmerit knocked off or a weird replacement vision port..? Also I obliterated the preshading i did when my airbrush decided to flood the tank in dunkelgelb... as it is more moody than well... a moody thing.

Anyway, thanks for looking!
