Russian Heavy Tank IS-2 - Model 1944 ChKZ

88th Independent Guards Heavy Tank Regiment - April 1945

Kit: 1/48 Tamiya
Extras: Hauler Photo-etch HLX48324 and stowage from a Tamiya Jerry Can set
Paints: Humbrol, Revell, Railmatch and Citadel acrylics - all applied by brush
WIP: Here

This was my first build for the Great Patriotic War Group Build. As with all 1/48 Tamiya AFV kits I've built so far it was an absolute pleasure to work on. The fit is superb and the crisp details make it a joy to paint and weather.

These photos were taken on my Spitfire display shelf - I am going to make a proper base for it over in the Vignette GB - here.

Edit 13/07/16 - As I mentioned at the top of this post; this 1/48 Tamiya IS-2 was built as part of the Great Patriotic war GB. Once I had completed this one I began work on a 1/72 Italeri IS-2 and once I had finished it I took some photos to put in the RFI section and I included a couple which showed this 1/48 version next to the 1/72nd one. So I thought I would include the two photos here too:

EDIT: 15/08/16 - some photos of the tank on it's vignette display base which I made in the Vignette GB:

Stix this one is a BEAST! Might be your best work so far (but it is very hard to chose between so many builds, so far my favs vere the P-47 and Crusader :) ), i love the paint work, how you managed to enhance the "plasticity" of the surface (the texture or how to say it), just beautiful! + the weathering, mud, stainings.. lovely.. and most of all i LOVE the stowage and the ropes there!!! Realy cool details (and also the white stripes, with the streaking white paint... ) great work Stix :):goodjob:

Outstanding build Stix. :clap2::clap2: 'Well done' just doesn't seem to cover it! :worthy::worthy:

Hi Francis. Thank you very much for your lovely comments - you are too kind!

Very nice, hard to think it's 48th! That white band on the turret captures the field application nicely

Hi The_Lancaster and thank you as well for your kind comments. I must admit I was quite chuffed with the way the white stripes turned out. It really was a bit of an experiment with a smallish stippling brush for the actual stripes. The runs were done with a fine pointed paintbrush.

very nice work, looks great

Thank you very much batcode.

Great model and great photographs (particularly the monochrome image!)

Hi Alpha Delta 210 and thank you for your kind comments. The B&W image did turn out quite well. I may have a go at doing some more at some point.

Hi Wolwe and thank you. Yes it was an incredible tank but I have to say it's design has grown on me while working on it and I have to thank Sgt.Squarehead for suggesting and sending me the 1/72 version or I wouldn't have got hold of this one. Thank you for all your comments.

Finally - thank you to everyone who has taken the time to comment.

Kind regards,

I have posted a couple of photos in the first post of this thread to show the comparison between this IS-2 and the Italeri 1/72nd IS-2 which I have recently completed. The 1/72 IS-2's RFI can be found here.

Kind regards,

Stix

Looks fantastic Stix, all ready to roll into Berlin and misbehave in a grand fashion. I always have to pinch myself to believe you do all the paintwork with a hairy stick.
