1/18 Ferrari 333SP, Daytona 24hrs 1998

Recommended Posts

A collector asked me to build this car, using a Hotwheels 1/18 model.

SCD-N.jpg

The Hot Wheels model and some PE from Tremonia :

230113%20%282%29.jpg

And some parts and decals from Legende Miniatures :

333SP%20MOMO%20001%202801%20%282%29.jpg

I took about an hour to take the model apart :

24-09-2012_28329.jpg

I got rid of the paint and used my Dremel to trim off the metal on the sides. Before :

My Dremel made short work of the zamac :

333SP%20MOMO%20002%202801B%20%284%29.jpg

I cut out a gap for the resin NACA duct :

333SP%20MOMO%20001%2003022013%20%287%29.

Sanded the louvres on the left side and added plasticard to change the shape of the headlight housing :

333SP%20MOMO%20070213%20%284%29.jpg

Cut away some zamac, added some plasticard and added another NACA duct :

I took a look at the rims and tires, and decided to use the original Hot Wheels tires because they fit the rims better :

333SP%20MOMO%20001%200403%20(3).jpg

The tires look a lot better after some sanding :

333SP%20MOMO%20001%200403%20(1).jpg

333SP%20MOMO%20001%200403%20(2).jpg

I found a way to fix the rims to the suspension. First I cut off the brakes and sanded the plastic brake discs to the same diameter of the PE ones :

13032013%20(1).jpg

Three little pieces of tubing for the front rims :

13032013%20(2).jpg

13032013%20(4).jpg

13032013%20(3).jpg

The front rims are to wide :

13032013%20(8).jpg

The diameter is to small for the Hot Wheels tires :

13032013%20(9).jpg

I glued a pieces of tubing to the rear rims :

13032013%20(5).jpg

13032013%20(6).jpg

A dryfit :

13032013%20(7).jpg

This is how Hotwheels made the cockpit :

333SPMOMO3003131.jpg

The cockpit of the real car looks like this :

P023Web.jpg

P021Web.jpg

P020Web.jpg

The seat has some plastic rods on the sides :

333SPMOMO3003132.jpg

These were cut off, and will be replaced :

333SPMOMO3003134.jpg

With my Dremel (What else ?) I removed the left sidewall :

333SPMOMO3003133.jpg

With a couple of pieces of plasticard, I extended the cockpit bathtub :

333SPMOMO300314A1.jpg

Dryfit :

333SPMOMO300314A3.jpg

I made a new sidewall :

333SP%20MOMO%2031032013%20%282%29.jpg

333SP%20MOMO%2031032013%20%283%29.jpg

333SP%20MOMO%2031032013%20%285%29.jpg

The suspension "arms / bars" (what's the name of those things ?) are overscale :

11052013%20%284%29.jpg

11052013%20%285%29.jpg

Made my one from a brass tube and rebuild the gearbox :

11052013%20%286%29.jpg

All my work is inspected by my cat :

11052013%20%287%29.jpg

11052013%20%288%29.jpg

11052013%20%289%29.jpg

It took a lot of work (and patience) to build the rear suspension from brass tube and copper plate :

31082013%20(2).jpg

Fixed together with a soldering iron :

31082013%20(1).jpg

Dryfit with the wheels :

31082013%20(3).jpg

The construction is hold together by 2 brass tubes inside the gearbox. It will be glued after painting :

31082013%20(4).jpg

There still a lot of sanding work left on the headlight housings, and I have to find a way to make the headlight covers :

31082013%20(5).jpg

The exhausts have given me a lot of headaches. But after much trial and error I found a method that works for me.

I don't know how many times I build and rebuild the exhaust tubes, but here's some pics of the different versions.

Electric wire :

27012014%20(1).jpg

Solder wire :

29012014%20(1).jpg

29012014%20(2).jpg

Leftover plastic (sprues) from a 1/35 scale tank :

31012014%20(1).jpg

31012014%20(2).jpg

I modified the engine in order to fit the exhaust tubes :

11022014%20(1).jpg

11022014%20(2).jpg

And the finally I found the right method to make the exhaust, a mixture of sprue, solder wire and aluminium wire :

03032014%20(1).jpg

03032014%20(2).jpg

03032014%20(3).jpg

Let's compare it with a reference pic :

YES, were getting there !!

Not everyone's cup of tea was this car but for me I love it, a proper ferrari sports car with some f1 traits.

I have never tried to modify a die cast as of yet but from what you have shown so far the work you have put in is top notch, I will be following this till the end

Thanks for the replies.

The large text on the photos is a watermark (sort of), normally you wont see them on the photos of future updates.

Next set of updates.

After a lot of hours of bending, cutting, sanding and dryfitting the left set of three inner pipes is ready :

01062014%20(1).jpg

01062014%20(2).jpg

The engine compartment has a big airscoop. I opened up the hole in the front and glued the inner part with CA which was covered with flour :

17082014%20(2).jpg

17082014%20(1).jpg

The Hot Wheels version looks like this :

17082014%20(4).jpg

The real one looks like this (this is not a picture of the car that won the race, but it has the same type of airscoop) :

11086189_large2.jpg

I used my dremel to cut a line that will hold the top horizontal frame :

17082014%20(3).jpg

Step 1 :

29082014%20(2).jpg

29082014%20(1).jpg

Step 2 :

15092014%20(3).jpg

15092014%20(4).jpg

More work on the big airscoop. I started by glueing the white plastic strip on the bottom of the airscoop (the silver paint is there to spot any gaps and cracks) :

30102014%20(2).jpg

Glued some plastic strip on the top of the engine to fill the gaps :

30102014%20(4).jpg

The airscoop now fits perfectly and without gaps on the engine :

30102014%20(5).jpg

The yellow strip will get roughly the same shape as the grey one :

30102014%20(1).jpg

30102014%20(2).jpg

I've added about 0,75 mm to the grey strip because it was to narrow :

30102014%20(3).jpg

Should look something like this :

30102014%20(6).jpg

Update.

Fuelpipe : first thing was to make the connector between the body and the pipe. I was a question of trial and error to find the right dimension and the postion of the holes :

02022015%20(1).jpg

The pipe was made from a knitting needle, the rings are drilled out pieces of sprue :

02022015%20(2).jpg

Dryfit :

02022015%20(3).jpg

Hotwheels has made the windows and the frame in one piece, these will be replaced :

02022015%20(4).jpg

Step 1 : Make an cutout in the body and and drill a hole for the brass tubes :

02022015%20(6).jpg

Step 2 : Cut the brass tubes to size and insert a piece of copper wire :

02022015%20(8).jpg

Step 3 : Glue pieces of plasticard to give the brass tubes the correct angle :

02022015%20(5).jpg

Step 4 : Dryfit :

02022015%20(7).jpg

This is the Hot Wheels electronics panel :

18052015%20(1).jpg

It's not wide enough and I don't like the details. After a couple of hours of sanding, drilling and dryfitting, this is the result :

18052015%20(2).jpg

I mad new electronic connectors with pieces from a lighter :

18052015%20(5).jpg

It was cut in three and then was sanded to size and reassembled :

18052015%20(4).jpg

The sidewalls of the cockpit need further modification. I've done some work in the past, but the walls weren't high enough. Now they run all the way to the underside of the body :

18052015%20(3).jpg

These are the first pieces I made for the battery and its housing :

18052015%20(6).jpg

The goal is to acheive this :

99-Ferrari-333-SP_DV-11-GCA_i01.jpg

I spend about 3 hours making the bracket for the battery. The bracket is scratchbuild and has 7 parts (5 brass, 2 plasticard), it's 5 x 3,5 x 3 mm :

22052015%20(3).jpg

22052015%20(1).jpg

22052015%20(2).jpg

A coat of primer shows that there is a bit more sanding to do :

I guess this is not everyone's cup of tea. Ah well, time to show some more.

Update :

Started with the Hot Wheels brake disc :

1a5805cedaf0a35bd647f04240807098.jpg

Looks better with a PE brake disc :

5c317713fcef7b07cf741e7e174e0e4a.jpg

But those are to small, ordered some larger ones from Legende Miniatures :

4e7f9248a957c94d273f6f185ec1c79c.jpg

Added a piece of plastic tube to the hole in the middle :

95917baae0da3d6626e4c23c3f04728a.jpg

Did some modification (must be the fifth or sixt) to the copper plates :

2df4f16e7c80302117626618942e8f72.jpg

These parts are needed on the inside of the wheels :

775c01d24413b83ebdebdd5f30e1d7c5.jpg

Then I turned my attention to the shocks. Hot Wheels made them like this :

7c6c749a49abcd24c5b4ec8907266e78.jpg

Nice, but there's a lot of room for improvement. Started making the shocks from parts found in lighters and a brass tube :

ac5203957e7cf209dc899a8ce0b62ab5.jpg

3d84efe13d47b8d0a26d3ba42eab0218.jpg

Assembled (the nearest one has the selfmade copper wire spring, the other one has the spring that came from a ballpoint pen), I will use the one with the spring from a pen :

Thanks for the replies.

Been a while, but here's an update.

After all the modifications the gearbox looked like this :

628d7b695448566bedf5380d0bd3857d.jpg

The tiny brass tube is also on the real car, it holds a bolt that attaches the gearbox to the engine :

51c32c689acedbab1beaea07a5f515b3.jpg

I used CA + flour to make the gearbox a little wider :

c5fb924ac97a39cad0b8174c65610369.jpg

My little helper took a break :

1a9b742bbc7d01fb2670be154f757b54.jpg

I've filled in the holes that held the brass suspension bars (that was from a previous modification) and glued the alu brackets in place :

1367b92aae13f0138fad5852782d177f.jpg

1cf8df29c4248def069a8963298e57bb.jpg

16a8ead58d0f2ceadbeadcb9b8a3678c.jpg

75736d807a6ecbd370ee5921e5c7f9c9.jpg

But then I ran into a serious problem. With all the mods I did, the arm for the rear wing no longer fits properly :

b228cb91991c02c71f174b1186067cfb.jpg

a2d8dfd2e7720c60f09af6460afa60a1.jpg

The plastic is also very thick :

84da4e056821b211fcc9cfd83b3ca862.jpg

Time for a powertool :

44f2a75ecd456a9974ee2dd832ecb3e2.jpg

Afer a few minutes the hard Hotwheels plastic got a lot thinner :

8e7006c5fe1ef4ee4d53cb27290511ba.jpg

But I needs some plasticard to make it fit nicely onto the gearbox :

eb66a3b657c7ef26e7a24005fc760c01.jpg

05f667bce821b3e383fba86fc108b7e5.jpg

The inside of the airscoops was hollowed out, these need to be filled in at the front but that's for later :

5a02d6911ed42901bceb71b694405c6b.jpg

Added some more pieces to the gearbox, two tubes that will hold the springs of the suspension and two very small rectangles (2,3 x 8 mm) :

4acee87c4cbe8fc5d27e4fcd4a9a44bc.jpg

Judging by the number of replies, I guess it's still not everyone's cup of tea...

After the plastic of the support for the rear wing was sanded, it was time to make it a little wider. I cut the support in half, added a piece of plasticard in the middle and one on both ends to give it a bit more rigidity. I also removed the plastic tube from the support. This tube was used to screw the rear wing onto the support. The tube is not on the real car, so it had to go  :

f3d9c61fdd8a6c454b8990f9f3993584.jpg

1a448cad04464382db7b3e7572e2ec6d.jpg

At the front end of the support I added some tiny pieces of plasticard to get the right shape :

6362c91280ca3b25e5a752982cd9298d.jpg

44d5d2ab6f2d61c8f1d84b3670af02bd.jpg

I made the support arms for the suspension. Brass was used for the bottom arms (these need to be strong), plastic for the upper ones :

d5befc496de59e963670ba48be0e616c.jpg

Dryfit  :

9306647a41808ce06038975b5df889a8.jpg

8bc6a90bdec287be6d711277bface9d5.jpg

Made an airjack from pieces of alu tube and 2 rivets, thread was cut in the alu tube. The plastic one is from Hotwheels :

ccb7395a1187428025fe7c16c37d524e.jpg

0e4823e213e808b58b709e9e285dd14b.jpg

Took me a few hours to glue the brass arms to the copper plates. The angles have to be exactly right to give the wheels the correct stance. One of the arms was a bit long, I cut it in half and reconnected it by soldering :

194149655a8e1c1f2c7bc1fcfbe6a482.jpg

Used a burner for the soldering :

f6e34911fefd2f43f94e4da5b0bac904.jpg

Now the arms are the same length :

423656d5dcbd2eb1aeb3bcb95fd8752b.jpg

A bit more sanding and polishing and the spot where the arm was soldered it no longer visible :

ba09b12545d4758ea79a8c6c5caa8577.jpg

Dryfit with the gearbox :

e8f567e51fd0ad253aed0ba7faf8be56.jpg

I very happy with the result.

Sincerely

Update :

Wasn't happy with the little brass tubes that I made, these had to go :

ae99af7fc6877a388ee6da8e20a21d86.jpg

They will be replaced by these brass bolts. The one on the right is what's left after the modification :

a685e2c8e2cac534d93d8ceb5f76355e.jpg

Did some work on the brake discs, started by cutting of the calipers :

5daf0ca7db834dd42c9f49f60015b3d9.jpg

Brake calliper is sanded and received a small strip of plasticard :

eeb00a7deac63f4bcc6e2908ca3079bf.jpg

The PE part with the logo will be glued on top of the calliper :

d3f2a36a7bc2252b9f00996912240c4b.jpg

I couldn't find PE brake discs that looks like the ones on the real car :

9bf2c45d474cf37c788a004f3777a646.jpg

So I decided to use the ones from the model. The lines were scribed using a needle in a pinvise and a panelscriber :

094fb1fc1c7e2846008ed0c5dfb8017c.jpg

Made a template from plasticard :

6218733820f9745914343396c2e01fbf.jpg

Attached the template with a piece of brass tube to some pieces of wood :

0d95cb7512a18ed69fb2fa9309ed8eb8.jpg

The lines are very fine (but the macro photos make them look huge). I sanded the brake discs to make the lines visible for the photos :

e5c4d19cebc9b3a654306571652c4739.jpg

The outer side of the brake discs were a bit more difficult because of the ring in the center, but with the help of my template it worked out all right :

170dafe9349599ea5425bd0c6c9637bc.jpg

Made the upper suspension arms. Was quite a bit of work to get them to the right length and to glue them in the correct angle :

e3603ab82b567bbda48df4b1b820f4bb.jpg

Dryfit :

af38416301e3fa9d3acdb328fe966e56.jpg

And for the first time since januari 2013, the car is back on its wheels :

0ae2d8cdc251d146b841a52753686a00.jpg

Still needs a bit of fiddling to get everything straight :

b5ae54dd3d9a2c5bc0d049497bbc44dc.jpg

As things get more and more complicated, the time between updates gets a lot bigger.
