1/35 Takom - 128mm Flak 40 Zwilling - FINISHED

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

This is quite an interesting subject by Takom that surprised us all. It just goes to show the vast range of kits and subjects available now. I bet most people never would have thought they would see a kit of this ever be made. Personally It's not my usual build but unusual enough to grab my attention.

I have been working on it on and off for a while now. Quite a nice kit but a bit laborious to build. This is down to most of the bits being duplicated to cover both guns and a slight mould misalignment meaning the parts clean up is taking longer than it should. I can finally see the light at the end of the building tunnel though.

I think I've seen this on ebay. Was thin twin gun a real thing?

I vaguely remember seeing this kit, shown at having some kind of rudimentary base. Couldn't understand if was just to be placed on the ground or perhaps onto some vehicle.

Seems maybe like the twin gun is mounted on a rotating base I see now, off some ebay item.

Apparently a new tool 2015 kit, from what I am reading on the internet.

Looks great Mark, look forward to seeing it at a club night, when it's finished of course.

It's could be a while Dave. I'm down next week but think I'm working the next two after that.

Yes these things were real. Not produced in great numbers they were so heavy they were static flak guns. These twin (Zwilling) guns were seen on top of the great flak tower's protecting German cities.

The kit comes with a crude base which is how I will be building it. If I had the time, space and effort I would love to build something like this.

Yes there is etch but it was released after I had built the two guns. I started this build maybe 8 months ago.

Etch review here.

A very interesting model, I remember coming out in an action game of WW2, I think it was Medal Of Honor - Airborne, and are bastente well-made graphics, a little old for what we have now.
If you can conseguirllo PC and you like videogames, you should try it.
, cheers mate

Small update guys. The main part of the guns is now complete and work has just started on the base. Up to section 50 is complete in the instructions. Not much more to go..

A very interesting subject. I bought a book on the subject of the German flak-towers a few years ago. Really amazing the size of these concrete monsters.

The build is coming a long very nicely

They were huge and so well made the allies had trouble destroying them during and after the war.

I think you can still see the remains of the "Tiergarten" tower but I didn't get around to going there, (I did see the Haus am Wannsee which was a rather weird experience).

Towards the final days of Berlin I think they packed about 60000 inhabitants of Berlin into each tower to shelter from the Allied air raids which gives a good idea of their size.

cheers,

Julian

Well the building is finally complete. Next up will be primer and painting. My one disappointment is the guns do not stay parallel in a few angles of incline. Not sure why this is as all seems straight. There is a bit of play in one of the guns though.

Looks great Mark, love the Bofors too, have that one in my stash, (so many models, so little etc.........)

The Bofors was a pure joy to build. One of those kits that fell together. I know what you mean about your last statement, just check my signature.

It was a rather shameless steal  The Bofors is one of those "I must have that" models that seem to float past in ever increasing numbers :coolio:

Wow!

I think that flak gun model ought to have a figure beside it to just off the scale. :)

I thought the flak gun barrels would look as small like a tiger tank barrel, but they seem huge.

If I remember I'll put a figure next to it for next picture.

The barrels are soo much bigger than the tank barrel on my Abrams. The Abrams barrel is like the front thin part of the Zwilling barrel. The closest resemblance I can think is the barrel from a M107 artillery piece.

First coat of primer on. It will probably need 3 sessions of primer to get it in all the nooks and crannies. Plus allowing it to fully cure before using the moving parts to gain access to areas hidden. Using standard Vallejo black primer as I want to get rid of it. Sprayed neat using 0.4 needle.

Is there any photo etch included in the box?

Yes there is a little bit. It covers the crew walk grills and a couple of strip grills for the drive motors on either side of the gun chassis. Also not shown are a couple of small round back ends for the two rounds of ammo that are supplied in the kit.

IMAG1303_zpsci1jwr3q.jpg

Nothing much else to report other than it has had another coat of primer. Today concentrating on the undersides and the areas exposed now the guns are in the lowered position. All I can say is stuff being a brush painter and tackling this kit. Its bad enough with the airbrush.
