Photo Etch Detail Set for Frog/Novo HMS Exeter

1:500 Atlantic Models

Following on from their excellent photo etch detail sets for FROG's HMS Ashanti and HMS Torquay comes another set intended for a FROG kit this time the heavy cruiser HMS Exeter. Obviously the kit isn't in production now, but it should be possible to find a copy from kit dealers, ebay, under the tables at shows or even via your favourite modelling forum.

Inside the large white envelope is an almost equally large single fret of thin, flexible brass. The fret is well protected by a piece of folded card as well as the four page instruction book. The instructions are printed on A4 paper and all of the parts are clearly labelled. There are very good illustrations to accompany the instructions, and it's clear that a great deal of thought has gone into producing this set. Aside from the usual ladders, chains, railings and anchors, you get the full set of anti-aircraft armament, including the eight barrelled pom pom mountings, the 0.5" Quad Vickers Guns and the 20mm Oerlikon cannons. Radar antennas, masts, cranes and catapults are all provided, and there are quite substantial parts to detail the anti-aircraft gun deck and director platforms, as well as the various splinter shields. Smaller details include boat davits, funnel caps, details for the Walrus aircraft, searchlights and depth charge equipment.

Just like their sets for HMS Ashanti and HMS Torquay, it's good to see Atlantic Models breathing new life into a venerable kit, enabling modellers to bring an old but fundamentally sound kit closer to modern standards. The set is very comprehensive and has been produced to a high standard too. Highly recommended.
