Foxbat
There are certain things the Russian steamroller is known for that have so far not appeared in this group build. I aim to address that here, but not until the postie has been. More then. Edited September 29, 2016 by Foxbat Update

Foxbat
If you meant "A quartet of cannons" then it would be "Квартет пушек" I did. I was relying on Google translate, and while it totally mangled my more imaginative titles I thought this one was pretty safe as it back translated OK. I'll update it now. Foxbat
Think of all those history programs on TV about the Eastern front and the two images that come to mind are hordes of infantry clinging to the back of masses of tanks and artillery - long lines of big guns. Thousands of them. Here are just four, to whet your appetite. I think with these, I'll build and paint them all at once and put them as a single entry in the Gallery since they'l be a lot easier tophotograph as a group than the tanks. Any road up - the kits: The ZIS-3 is labelled as an anti tank gun there, but was actually dual role, unlike the 57mm ZIS-2 that it part superseded, part supported.

Foxbat
First up is the M-30 howitzer. I thought I'd taken a sprue shot, but the camera says no, so the first shot is a set of unpainted sub assemblies. I quickly slapped some paint on, using the tried and tested wash, shade, highlight, wash technique which got me here. It was the work of seconds to snap those assemblies together. Time for detail painting and weathering. I really need to work on my camera technique. I have to get really close to fill the frame with these tiny kits, but that means losing the depth of field. Winder if any of my other lenses would do a better job? Andy Edited August 9, 2016 by Foxbat
Sgt.Squarehead
Cool.....I really like these kits, they're more than detailed enough for even the most pedantic wargamer's needs (ie: mine) and a great basis if you want to go crazy on the detail. As for the pictures, I'd concentrate on getting them sharp and then crop and resize them with imaging software.
Foxbat
I didn't realise how long it's been since the last update here. Lots to show you. First up the 45mm AT gun. Despite the small calibre, it was quite a high velocity weapon and remained in service to the end of the war as it provided a rugged and lightweight weapon that gave infantry a useful punch against anything except German heavy tanks. Sprue shot A complicated build as you can see. I went for 3B paint to finish the gun as an early war example. The wheels look to have canvas covers over the original spoked wheels, as the spokes are depicted on both sides of the wheels. Didn't take long to get to this point. Decided to build the ZIS3 concurrently. This 76.2mm dual purpose gun is the one I always think of as the definitive Russian GPW artillery piece from all the newsreel shots of it being used everywhere from the steppes to a direct fire weapon in street fighting. Again, a sprue shot (and yes, I did forget and took the trail legs off before I took the picture) The three together for comparison purposes. I glued the ZIS' trail legs later using the base in the pic above as a guide. This is where I left it tonight. Chassis complete. Gun well on the way. This is the only model here that comes close to being a proper kit, but it's going together quick and easy so I'm still quietly confident of finishing all four in the next 11 days. Foxbat
Well, it's together, but for the life of me I don't know how. This is the first truly horrible Zvezda kit I've experienced in any scale. Fit is sloppy, the plastic is soft and hard to work, and the finished kit looked at first like a Dali interpretation of the real thing I've tweaked it straight(ish) and slapped some paint on, but this will never be one for the front row of the display cabinet. A Shame, as everything else I've built in this GB has been an absolute joy. Anyway, this is where it sits now: Andy

Foxbat
15 hours ago, Sgt.Squarehead said: Looks pretty good to me. Thank you. The trails weren't square so when I put the wheels on, only one of the touched the ground. The shield stays don't look to be in the right place or at the right angle, (and one of them snapped) so the shield is too high above the barrel and too far back, touching the sight. You can't really see from that picture, but the teeth of the elevation mechanism should be against the 'big lumps' under the barrel and ahead of the chassis, but there's a gap so Boris is going to have a massive task moving anything if Ivan decides to fire at anything not straight and level in front of them. The wheels are nice though. I do like them Andy

Foxbat
I've been very aware of the looming deadline. I also lost last weekend to company and I'm away next weekend so I have three nights to finish everything. No pressure then I've finished construction on the last of my artillery tonight. It's a little rough, but hopefully it will come good with a bit of paint and a sympathetic lens. Here are the sprues, taken at lunchtime today: And here is the completed build, ready for paint. Managed to straighten out that barrel without breaking it which was nice. Going to be an interesting last couple of days. Foxbat
And here she is tonight with a lick of paint, some of it obviously still wet. I'll let it all dry and settle overnight, then tomorrow shuld be final touch ups and photos. Friday will be a desperate Tu-2 canopy painting exercise to get everything finished before I go away for the weekend. Andy Not panicking at all. Really.
Foxbat
I'm not sure if this counts as all good things coming to an end, or just 'this too will pass' but I'm declaring this group build within a group build over. Here's a group photo, there are more in the Gallery. Is this the right place to say I had a blast?
