coolhand Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Hi, As fellow hairy stick user I just wanted to say how I marvel at the results you get. The IS-2 looks great, I hope I can get my 1/35 version to look half as good. 1
PlaStix Posted June 18, 2016 Author Posted June 18, 2016 Hi, As fellow hairy stick user I just wanted to say how I marvel at the results you get. The IS-2 looks great, I hope I can get my 1/35 version to look half as good. Hi Andy. Thank you very much for your kind comments. Which 1/35 kit are you building/planning to build? Having made this one I'm tempted to try the Tamiya 1/35 version. If the detailing is as nice as this one it should make up into a good model. If yours is in progress is there any chance of a couple of photos? A really impressive result. Bravo!Hi Roberto and thank you too for your kind comments - although it's not finished yet - I just got carried away with the photos.Kind regards, Stix
PlaStix Posted June 18, 2016 Author Posted June 18, 2016 As sometimes happens - I spent quite a bit of time on the 1/48 version today but there isn't a lot of difference between the photos below and last week's photos. The first part of the the morning was spent adding Mig Mud to the lower parts of the front and rear of the hull plus to the tracks. Then I stippled on a wash of very thinned Humbrol 29, Dark Earth, before adding the tow cables, U-shackles, light, horn, turret hatch covers and aerial: I still need to finish getting the tow cables to sit flat and to do some final weathering. I'm then going to get the figure painted and make up some stowage items. More tomorrow I hope. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix 8
coolhand Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 Hi, I have the Tamiya 1/35 version in my stash. I'm hoping to start building it in the near future. I can confirm its a very nice kit, certainty on par with the 1/48 version. I like the fact that it has both the rubber band and link & length tracks included. 1
PlaStix Posted June 20, 2016 Author Posted June 20, 2016 Hi Andy. Thank you for the information about the Tamiya kit - it does sound like it should be good. Hopefully you'll be doing a WIP so I can get even more tempted! I wasn't sure, at first, about L&L tracks but I really like them now. Yesterday's work was primarily focused on some stowage items that I wanted to add. I've used some stuff from the Tamiya Jerry Can set that I got a while back for some other 1/48 builds. First up I got them assembled but left parts still attached to the sprues so I had something to hold while painting: I also worked on the figure Tamiya provide with the kit but I forgot to take any 'during' photos. I didn't end up using the barrel as it was too big for what I wanted but this is what the stowage looked like after being glued in place: The rope is actually a suitably coloured thread from Mrs PlaStix's sewing box which I soaked in some very thinned PVA mixed with Humbrol's dark earth. A couple more views: Then I took a few more to show the current state of play: So I didn't get it all completed like I'd hoped but it's not far off. There's still some items I want to add and I need to do some final bits of weathering. So.....hopefully next weekend. I've also now had an idea, for when I add the figures, about making a small vignette so I may add it to my 1/72 vignette over in the Vignette. GB. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix 11
stevej60 Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 All coming together nicely Stix looking forward to the small scale build to come, sod,s law I scoured every stand at the recent show for Revells 72 scale T-34 no luck at all hence the fun but not as accurate Armorfast pair today popped into LMS their on the shelf the very kit re-issued!I was tempted but hankering to build a larger kit and I,ve got my sights on Tamiya's SU-85 they are a steal at some of the pre-owned retailer's. 1
PlaStix Posted June 21, 2016 Author Posted June 21, 2016 Hi Steve and thank you. Yes I'm looking forward to starting work on the 1/72nd version this weekend - partly because it means I can also be starting on my vignettes! Tamiya's SU-85 does look like it will be a great project too! I'll watch out for if you get it started! Kind regards, Stix

I love the white stripe and the paint streaking and leaking down, that is realy realy great and well done, i ll have to check the earlier WIP or ask you for tips how to do that as it looks realy cool!! Also the stowage holding ropes, thats something so often missed on tanks, and it adds a lot to the result, realy nice work 1
John_W Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Been following this on my phone. Just viewed it on a big monitor and it's much more impressive. 1
Cookenbacher Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Wonderful stuff Stix - the stowage adds another level. 1
GREG DESTEC Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Nice additions to an already great looking model. The extras really add to the overall appearance of the subject. I am looking forward to see what you do with the figures. Well done Stix 1
amblypygid Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Great work, Stix. I keep eyeing the Dragon IS-2 in my stash, and you're to blame! 1

PlaStix Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 (edited) looking very nice Stix, love the details. All the best Chris Cheers Chris. A lot of the details are down to the superb Tamiya kit and the PE from Hauler. Makes 'em good to paint though! wow Stix!!! i m at work so i had just a quick look, but holy hell that IS-2 looks awesome!!! I love the white stripe and the paint streaking and leaking down, that is realy realy great and well done, i ll have to check the earlier WIP or ask you for tips how to do that as it looks realy cool!! Also the stowage holding ropes, thats something so often missed on tanks, and it adds a lot to the result, realy nice work Hi Wolwe and thank you, as always, for your very kind comments! The paint streaking down was a kind of an extension of the stripes. I stippled the very thinned Humbrol matt white paint between strips of roughly applied masking tape. I didn't worry too much about paint getting under the tape. I wanted the paint to look patchy. Then I used a very fine pointed brush, with very thinned paint again, but took most of it off on kitchen roll before streaking the brush lightly down a few times from the stripe. I mostly did it where paint has leaked under the tape. I have to say I was pleased with the effect. Been following this on my phone. Just viewed it on a big monitor and it's much more impressive.Hi John and thank you very much too! Glad it looks okay on the bigger screen!Wonderful stuff Stix - the stowage adds another level.Thank you by much Cookie. It was looking at other people's builds on BM that convinced me that stowage kind of brings tanks to life. I think figures help too.Nice additions to an already great looking model. The extras really add to the overall appearance of the subject. I am looking forward to see what you do with the figures. Well done Stix Thank you very much Greg. I'm not sure which figures from the set I'll use yet - there's so many! but I'm currently planning on doing a vignette with them and the tank for the Vignette GB. I won't get much space around the tank though!Great work, Stix. I keep eyeing the Dragon IS-2 in my stash, and you're to blame!Thank you very much too Chris. I'd love to see your Dragon IS-2 in progress so I don't mind being to blame!!! Looks smashing Stix.....Now about that little one. Thank you Sarge and don't worry - I promise I will make a start on the 1/72nd version this Saturday whatever happens!Kind regards, Stix Edited June 22, 2016 by PlaStix 2
Ozzy Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Figures definitely bring models to life, it's all looking good Stix can't wait to see the rest of the gang. 1

PlaStix Posted June 25, 2016 Author Posted June 25, 2016 Well I am all caught up now stix, she's a beauty! A beautiful monster! I mean that's what you want when you ask for a tank!! Looking forward to the rest Rob Hi Rob and thank you. Yeah monster sounds about right - but it's a great looking monster!Well this 1/48 version is just about complete. I've done some more weathering, although you'd never guess, and I also added a couple of bits and pieces so, for now, I'm going to concentrate on my 1/72 build. Some photos first of what the 1/48 version looked like this morning: I want to add some figures but I'm going to do that as part of the Vignette GB. I recently got some cheap picture frames from Wilkos, including some 7in x 5in ones which will be ideal for the Vignette GB where the maximum area of the base has to be 6in x 6in - or variations thereof. This is the current 1/48 version on the frame: It's a little tight but enough to work with. I may add a bit more weathering once I know what colour the scenery is going to end up. When I get chance I will post some photos I took this afternoon in the Gallery. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix 9
Foxbat Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 (edited) A lovely model, I really like that. Can't help thinking from your pictures that it's a massive cannon with a gratuitously ugly tank stuck on the back Edited June 25, 2016 by Foxbat 1
Sgt.Squarehead Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Looks awesome.....Personally I'd be tempted to let more of that enormous barrel overhang the base, firstly to give you more room behind the tank for figures (the safest place around a gun like that) and secondly to emphasise just what a monster of a gun it really was! PS - Did I mention that the IS-2 has a really BIG gun? 1
