rob85 Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 The tracks look excellent stix, very realistic with the sag you have to them Rob 1
John_W Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Looking nice. The Tamiya 1/48 kits realy do set the standard and just fall together. 1
PlaStix Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 Zvezda's Panther is probably the best 1/72 Ausf D on the market, the Dragon kits are a bit shonky by comparison.....Ask me how I know! That's good to know - shame about the Dragon one. The tracks look excellent stix, very realistic with the sag you have to them Rob Thanks Rob but as Sarge says below - the sag is down to Tamiya. The sag comes in the box.....Hence my envy. It is a great way of making up the tracks.Looking nice. The Tamiya 1/48 kits realy do set the standard and just fall together. Thanks John - I couldn't agree more! These 1/48 Tamiya kits do seem excellent. Just catching up - looks great! Cliff Hi Cliff and thank you.I'm really looking forward to tomorrow morning when I can get more done on this project. Kind regards, Stix
Sgt.Squarehead Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Just out of interest Stix, what colour from their range do Tamiya actually recommend for this model? I've always used XF-65 Field Grey for a faded scheme, but it's probably a bit too blue/grey. 1
PlaStix Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 Hi Sarge. Tamiya recommend TS-28 Olive Drab 2. Kind regards, Stix
Sgt.Squarehead Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 That's one of their sprays.....Don't suppose there's an XF number listed anywhere? EDIT - Scratch that.....Finally found a conversion chart: TS-1 = XF-64TS-2 = XF-61TS-3 = XF-60TS-4 = XF-63TS-5 = XF-62TS-6 = XF-1TS-9 = X-5TS-12 = X-6TS-13 = X-22TS-14 = X-1TS-15 = X-4TS-16 = X-8TS-21 = X-12TS-23 = X-14TS-24 = X-16TS-25 = X-17TS-26 = X-2TS-27 = XF-2TS-29 = X-18TS-30 = X-11TS-32 = XF-25TS-33 = XF-9TS-38 = X-10TS-47 = X-8TS-61 = XF-67TS-62 = XF-68TS-63 = XF-69TS-66 = XF-75TS-67 = XF-77TS-68 = XF-78TS-69 = XF-79TS-70 = XF-74TS-71 = X-19TS-72 = X-23TS-73 = X-26TS-74 = X-27TS-77 = XF-1 Typically XF-64 is probably the only Tamiya green that I don't currently have! 1
PlaStix Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 I decided today was going to be a day to get some of the photoetch applied. First job was to replace these side grills ...............with these: Original grills removed with a flat ended blade and new ones glued in place with super glue: The rear grill is just resting in place - I'm going to paint the slats first before gluing this in place: I also made up the photoetch toolbox: Which is a little better detailed than this: I decided to have the toolbox open to add a little more interest. I'll perhaps have something protruding from it. The other thing I started to do today was damage the fenders: Most photos tend to show the fenders, especially the front ones, either damaged or missing completely. I got a little more done later on but didn't get time to take any photos. I've fitted the PE end handles and filler caps to the fuel drums. Hopefully I'll get some more done tomorrow. I'm hoping to get the upper hull painted and attached to the lower hull......but we'll see. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix 5
Sgt.Squarehead Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Not normally a huge fan of brass as you know, but those are all very worthy additions, that toolbox is really quite a lovely little model in itself. PS - Regarding the fenders - The IS-2 was an enormously rugged monocoque hull fitted with tin-foil fenders so they often got completely shredded, here's some typical fender damage: Ripping the whole thing off as far back as the second or third mounting strut not be even remotely unreasonable. 1

I'm not intending to have them that damaged - just not pristine! This morning I spent the time getting the paint on the upper hull and while the various layers were drying I assembled the turret parts. This photo shows that I have now applied three thinned layers of Humbrol Army Green: The upper hull hasn't yet been glued to the hull. Here are the turret parts I had assembled: Thanks to John W's advice I was especially careful with the grab handles. I only managed to break one but luckily Tamiya provided one more than required on the turret. I did some more work during the afternoon but I'll post the photos for this work tomorrow. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix Edited June 5, 2016 by PlaStix 5
PlaStix Posted June 5, 2016 Author Posted June 5, 2016 (edited) Thank you Ozzy. The paint scheme is just going to be the straight forward green but I'm hoping to do some heavyish weathering over it. I got a base wash on the upper hull and fuel drums this afternoon and did some dry-brushing - so I've got it started. I'll do more once the upper and lower hulls are glued together and the turret has been given a base coat of the Army Green. Kind regards, Stix Edited June 5, 2016 by PlaStix
PlaStix Posted June 6, 2016 Author Posted June 6, 2016 Hi Steve and thank you! As promised - yesterday afternoon's work. First off I did some targeted washes around some of the detail with Revell's Anthracite followed by some dry-brushing with a lightened version of Humbrol's Army Green. I also added a bit of Revells Matt Yellow to brighten the mix a little. Please note the upper hull is not yet glued onto the lower hull but I have glued on the rear PE grill: I also did the same on the fuel drums, tool box and saw. The turret is now complete except for the hatch covers which I will add after painting. The main gun has only had a base coat of Humbrol's Army Green: More next weekend. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix 10
stevej60 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Dry brushing and washes look fine Stix, coming together nicely 1

PlaStix Posted June 8, 2016 Author Posted June 8, 2016 (edited) Dry brushing and washes look fine Stix, coming together nicely Hi Steve and thank you. Yeah the paints seem to be going on okay at the moment. I'm hoping to get the basic painting done on Saturday morning so I can start getting some weathering done. My plan is to do the hull weathering before adding the fuel drums, tools and other bits and pieces rather than having to try and weather around them.Your fuel drums are looking good with the washes.Cheers Ozzy, thank you.Coming along beautifully Stix. Loving the paintwork Thank you Nigel! Lovely work using washes and different shades again stix, shaping up to be another cracker Rob Thank you Rob, you're too kind!Great progress Stix, thats looking to turn out a really nice IS-2. Cheers GregThank you Greg. Once I'd got past the wheels it all seems to be coming together quite quickly. Can't wait for the weekend.Kind regards, Stix Edited June 8, 2016 by PlaStix 2
John_W Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 Looking nice there. Glad the handles all went on the turret. Too often my builds have "battle damage" courtesy of the carpet monster. I have the Tamiya Tiger complete with the zimmerit kit waiting in the stash. 1

I have the Tamiya Tiger complete with the zimmerit kit waiting in the stash. Hi John. Yes I was really grateful for your advance warning about the handles - it made me take much care with them than I would have done. I haven't got Tamiya's 1/48 Tiger - I bought and made the rather nice 1/48 Skybow Tiger 1 because it came with the Zimmerit molded on: ....but having said that I still fancy a go at making Tamiya's version together with the Zimmerit add on set. I will watch out for your build when you get around to it. Thank you again. Kind regards, Stix 4
John_W Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 That's a nice Tiger. Bookmarked the build for reference. The Tamiya Zimmerit set comes with two types, straight and wavy, so will have to check references carefully. The handles were a sod, but not so hard to fabricate replacements. It's when you loose tiny brackets and lights it becomes a pain. The Tamiya 1/48 are just perfect in terms of engineering. I built a Trumpeter T90 and it seemed over engineered with etch for parts that could have been moulded. I have a stalled Hobbyboss T34, and have left half the interior parts on the sprue as they are not visible - same with the Trumpeter BTR ( Invisible PE brackets to fit the drivers seat to the floor). I am still tempted by the excellent Mary Rose that Mrs Stix built. 1
PlaStix Posted June 10, 2016 Author Posted June 10, 2016 Thank you John. I thoroughly enjoyed building Skybow's Tiger 1 and I found the engineering was just about right. Interesting that Tamiya provides two types of Zimmerit - I am probably going to end up having to get the Tamiya 1/48 version now I've been thinking about it - the Zimmerit set is reasonably priced on the big A at the moment. In the same Achtung Panzer GB I built one of Hobbyboss's 1/48 Shermans and I found that more tricky in places although it does make up into a reasonable model. With regards the Mary Rose that Mrs PlaStix made it is actually a nice little kit that makes up into a good model. Because Mrs P. made it in the Starter Set GB she was a bit more limited with what she could use. Check out AdrianMF's version here http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234982469-airfix-1400-mary-rose/- he added quite few extras and it looks great. Kind regards, Stix
