PlaStix Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 Thank you for the photo of your IS-2 - it looks superb! I'm really impressed with your weathering......I will 'borrow' some ideas. Kind regards, Stix
stevej60 Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Nice to see a start Stix,I like the weight idea I,ve only seen the metal hull configuration on their Tiger, the sprue shot's show a couple of very well molded kit's. 1
Sgt.Squarehead Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 And he's off..... Blimey you get into these build fast. PS - Just noticed the kits are different variants.....The Italeri is an early and the Tamiya is a late. 1

Hi Steve. Yes the weights or metal hulls do give these 1/48 kits a bit more presence, if you know what I mean. They tend to sit better on any scenic grasses I use. And he's off..... Blimey you get into these build fast. PS - Just noticed the kits are different variants.....The Italeri is an early and the Tamiya is a late. Yeah I've been looking forward to this GB and tried to time the other GB builds to give me chance to start these straight off! I hadn't realised they were the early and late versions until fairly recently - when I came to wash them in warm soapy water!! Yesterday I got some more done but struggled to upload the photos until today. First off - photos of some painting done - I chose to do a base coat of Humbrol 102 - Matt Army Green with a wash of Gunship Grey - lower hull: Wheels: While waiting for the above paints to dry I attached the remaining PE brackets and bolt heads onto the spare tracks: Once the grey wash was dry I applied some targeted washes of Revell's Antracite. Once this was dry I did some dry-brushing with a lightened version of the Army Green which I added a touch of matt yellow to - hull: Running gear: I still intend to do quite a bit more weathering to all these parts before I assemble them. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix 9
stevej60 Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Excellent idea to weather on the sprue Stix,I,ll be nicking that Idea if you dont mind!
Sgt.Squarehead Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 It all seems very odd to me Stix, but it certainly gets the results.
wimbledon99 Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Nice weathering Stix and well done with that PE! Very tidy work
badger Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 The Italeri one builds up quite nicely - here's my part finished one with the only addition being my usual RB Models metal barrel: Really should get this finished! Ben 3
PlaStix Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 Excellent idea to weather on the sprue Stix,I,ll be nicking that Idea if you dont mind! Hi Steve. You steal away! - Because I brush paint I find it much easier doing as much painting and weathering as I can while the parts are still on the sprues. My intention is to get the sides of the lower hull weathered before I attach the wheels. It all seems very odd to me Stix, but it certainly gets the results. Most things I do are odd.............. Just stumbled across this... Thank you for stopping by.Nice weathering Stix and well done with that PE! Very tidy work Thank you Nigel. The PE wasn't to bad for these bits - just tiny. There's some interesting stuff ahead mind. The Italeri one builds up quite nicely - here's my part finished one with the only addition being my usual RB Models metal barrel: Really should get this finished! Ben Hi Ben. Yes you should! It was looking excellent!Only a minor update at the moment. I decided to get the tracks painted and started some weathering on them. Thinned Revell Anthracite was applied first followed by some dry-brushing with Humbrol's Gunmetal: I'm hoping to get some more done later. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix 3
PlaStix Posted May 29, 2016 Author Posted May 29, 2016 Odd.....But good. Ta. Nice to see these moving forward stix Rob Thanks Rob. Bit slower progress than I thought but the running gear and tracks, in terms of painting and the weathering started, are getting there. Some washes on the tracks: .........and the same on the spare tracks: Next I started with some rust washes on the sides of the hull - I do the weathering in these areas now because they'll be difficult to get at once the wheels and tracks are on: The wheels and running gear had some areas highlighted with Humbrol's Gunmetal followed by some light washes of rust in places: Then I cut the wheels off the sprues so I could paint the rims with thinned Gunmetal: Before I finally assembled all the wheels: I might get some more done later or tomorrow because it's a Bank Holiday Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix 7
GREG DESTEC Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 Blimey! Look at all those wheels...at least they don't have rubber surround or you'd still be painting them. Looking great though Stix, great dry brushing and weathering. Cheers Greg. 1
Ozzy Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 Nice modular painting, what colour are you using? As I've not event thought of what green to use yet. 1
PlaStix Posted May 30, 2016 Author Posted May 30, 2016 (edited) Blimey! Look at all those wheels...at least they don't have rubber surround or you'd still be painting them. Looking great though Stix, great dry brushing and weathering. Cheers Greg.Thank you Greg. Yes they took a while to do!!Nice modular painting, what colour are you using? As I've not event thought of what green to use yet.Thank you too Ozzy. The green I've used is Humbrol 102 - Matt Army Green. I looked through a fair few build articles of JS-2s to see what others used if they couldn't use the Tamiya recommended ones and this came up a few times. It looks okay - maybe a bit greyer than I thought it might be. I think it will look okay when the weathering is done.Coming along nicely! Thank you SJLR_1Today I first got some more weathering done on the lower hull sides, including adding some Mig Mud then the wheels: Then it was time to get the tracks on: One side seemed to fit better than the other but these link and length tracks are far better than some of the rubber band types that some manufacturers use. I also did a bit of work on the fuel drums but nothing worth a photo. More next weekend. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix Edited May 30, 2016 by PlaStix 6
Sgt.Squarehead Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Looking most excellent Stix, the pre-sagged L&L does look very good and it saves a fair bit of work. 1
PlaStix Posted May 31, 2016 Author Posted May 31, 2016 Hi Sarge. I certainly agree about the tracks - they certainly look far better than the rubber band style. And the fit is usually pretty good as well. I think the issues I had on one side of mine were down to user error rather than Tamiya's fault. It's a shame more manufacturers don't go down this route. I also like the fact that Tamiya do some of their's as pairs of links rather than individual links - it makes assembly a breeze. Kind regards, Stix
fatfingers Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Aye up Stix. I see another masterpiece in the making! Regards, Steve 1
Sgt.Squarehead Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Have you tried a Zvezda or MaCo/Revell kit yet Stix? The very latest new flavour in tracks is 'hard-plastic flexible-bands'.....Sounds mad, looks very good. Learstang is building the Zvezda 1/72 ISU-152 which has them, I'm really looking forward to seeing how he gets on. 1
stevej60 Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Shaping up to be another classic Stix, love the weathering process. 1
PlaStix Posted June 1, 2016 Author Posted June 1, 2016 Aye up Stix. I see another masterpiece in the making! Regards, Steve Hi Steve. Thank you very much..........I'll wait and see........ Learstang is building the Zvezda 1/72 ISU-152 which has them, I'm really looking forward to seeing how he gets on. Hi Sarge. No I haven't tried building anything with them yet but a while back I picked up Zvezda's 1/72 Panther cheap which I think has these hard plastic tracks - It will be interesting to see how they work. Thanks Stix, she's coming along nicely. No problem and thank you. Shaping up to be another classic Stix, love the weathering process. Hi Steve and thank you. It does seem odd adding weathering to a model at this relatively early stage but I find it easier doing it now in these areas than after all the other bits are added. Kind regards, Stix 1
Sgt.Squarehead Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Zvezda's Panther is probably the best 1/72 Ausf D on the market, the Dragon kits are a bit shonky by comparison.....Ask me how I know! 1
