1/48 F-14A Tomcat in 2016 and F-14D in 2018!

Recommended Posts

Not bought any AMK kits yet, but I really fancy doing a Iranian F-14 one day, and will get the AMK kit... After all they have brought us the MiG-31 & soon to be MiG-25!

But like Hasegawa the weapons will be in a seperate kit if the labelling on the sprue shots is anything to go by. I also note the lack of a flaps/slats out option. Guess it will be easier to sweep the wings.

If AMK comes with the same level of quality and detail as in their MIG31, then this one is already doomed.

No separate flaps? No weapons? Seriously?

So after a number of rumours that have gone on for years, Tamiya is finally doing it for real ! I'd better start saving, this is one of those kits that I will simply have to buy. Add the already announced AMK kit and this is going to be a good if expensive Christmas for a Tomcat lover like me.

It's sure early to judge from the sprues but I can already see some very interesting things (for one the windscreen moulded with a large part of the surrounding metal, will make blending this in with the fuselage much easier) and some detail to the level I'd expect from Tamiya. At the same time other features leave me wondering... no deployable slats and flaps will make assembly easier (and maybe the kit cheaper) but are IMHO a nice feature to have. The "oversweep" setting that was common to see on aircrafts when parked on carriers may be impossible to have with interconnected moving wings and this would IMHO be a bad decision. In any case, one I'll have to buy, if only because I have almost all 1/48 Tomcat kits and the collection would be incomplete without one of these

Think I will wait for the AMK one!

If is on parr with their Mig then......................

RG

Totally agree. Pretty sure this will be good but I suspect the AMK kit will give it a run for its money. Of course, details of the AMK kit are still sparse, we may be leaping to conclusions about deployed flaps and slats...

Do you reckon that was a big enough hint, Martin?

From Tamiya's blog:

##### 1/48 F-14A TOMCAT

• 1/48 scale plastic model assembly kit.
• Fuselage length: 398mm; wingspan: 212mm - 408mm (according to position of movable "swing wing").
• The streamlined form of the aircraft is accurately captured, complete with moving wing - it can be depicted
at angles from 20-75 degrees.
• The aircraft is depicted in parked position, with landing gear deployed.
• Separate parts are included to depict the different airbag and sealing plate shapes with the wing at 20 and 75
degrees. They can be attached and detached after completion of the model.
• Opening canopy piece allows closer inspection of the detail in the 2-seater cockpit.
• Ladder and step components can be built in deployed or stowed positions.
• Comes with 2 striking high-visibility marking options, which are tentatively planned to depict F-14As from
the VF-84 (Jolly Rogers) and VF-2 (Bounty Hunters) U.S. Navy Fighter Squadrons.
• 2 highly-realistic figures are included to depict seated pilot and co-pilot.
•1/48 scale missile set (Item 12670) available separately.
Looks like they have taken a page out of Hasegawa's playbook and are offering the weapons separately.

Thanks for posting this extract Mark, so parts for the parking wing position are included (75° is this position, maximum angle in flight is 68°) this is good news and means my worries were not justified. It may seem a small thing but in the end a Tomcat on the ground would have the wings at this angle 99% of the times...

At first sight a old school kit approach, two pilots, not over-engineered, no weapons incl. So far away from the current Chinese productions.
RIP the Revellogram, Hasegawa, Academy, HobbyBoss, Italeri kits... And AMK?

If that's the Tamiya kit then one thing I don't like for starters is there's what looks like a lack of clear parts for the wing lights etc. Not good in my books.

After the AMK Mig-31, and how immense it is, I am going to wait. If the AMK f-14 is to the same standard as their Migs, it'll be a winner.

Finally I have a valid reason to part with my Hasegawa Tomcat! Just so I don't start any arguements I'll have buy both the Tamiya and the AMK version. At least that's what I'll be telling SHMBO!

Shame one of them couldn't have done the later marks. And there's that infernal Jolly Rogers scheme, again. >sigh<

Looking forward to the aftermarket decals, anyway.

Well, I'll be happy to relieve you and all other modellers who want to dump their Hasegawa Tomcats of the burden of all those old kits...

Well, something interesting here. Now I can see a few eduard (hobbyboss kits) ending up on eBay. Weapons separate is a con, I hate that you have to spend more on weapons.

Still yet to decide if I'll have one
