The plane would fly over it (them) and the ring creates an electronic field to detonate the mine(s) or so have understood. There were several german, mostly Seaplanes, equiped with such a Ring. Ifaik Do24, BV138, Ha 139, Do23, even some Wellington were used by the british with such a magnetic Ring.
