Airfix Daleks in Manhattan

Recommended Posts

I'm on a bit of a Doctor who build marathon at the moment as this kit is getting done alongside the Welcome Aboard TARDIS kit.

This one looks like it's going to be a bit more of an involved build compared to the the other one as the Daleks appear to have a fair few parts and there will be some hefty seam work I reckon.

All of this will of course be made more difficult due to the fact that I will be building this from behind the sofa ( memebers of a certain age will know what I mean )

Anyhoo, on with the show

Here's the box

20160502_112807_zps79aokiwn.jpg

Plenty of placcy in there too

20160502_113103_zps0edr9uju.jpg

And some of the parts are pretty hefty ( gonna need a roller to paint it )

Not much done to this at the moment just got the main parts of the diorama together and the parts off the sprues and cleaned up ready for painting

20160505_093114_zpsugltmygn.jpg

Part of the reason for lack of progress was the Daleks, they have electronics in the head ( lights and sound ) and the bases contain the batteries. First thing I did after I opened the box was to shove some batteries in and wire things up to test the electronics and of course nothing worked. The Dalek heads are pre assembled and just need you to screw the supplied wires to the heads and the bases but on my kit I had to take everything apart and re-fit the terminals inside the heads and bases to get a decent contact, not difficult but it was time consuming.

But they now chat away quite happily ( well as happy as a Dalek can get ) and the lights flash in time with the speech.

I'll be back at the bench in the morning so hopefully should have something mildly interesting progress wise to show over the weekend

So until then make sure to keep your sonic screwdriver's fully charged and keep the jelly babies close to hand

Like the look of this - would like to get one but they seem to be quite rare nowadays and of course with the high cost associated with rarity.

Its not a bad kit to be honest, but the plastic it's made of is horrible it reminds me of the kind of material that those plastic washing up bowls are made of as its a bit "waxy" and isn't nice to sand which is a bit of a pain as some of the sprue attachments are tree sized.

They do turn up on that well known auction site from time to time and I've seen some go for silly money but also seen some reasonable priced ones too

I've got a bit of a gap in my schedule while I wait for some parts to arrive for the Indiana Jones mine carts so I've done a bit to this kit

I've made a start on Delek Sec and got some primer on ( all just dry fitted at the mo )

20160622_104643_zpsqnbiresq.jpg

He's molded in black plastic but the detail shows up nicely in grey and it's pretty good

20160622_104718_zpscaa0yl5b.jpg

Gave Squidward a blast of primer too

20160622_104740_zps2nzz2z4d.jpg

And a bit of shading mit der German grey

I've been using a couple of screen grabs from the Daleks in Manhatten episode for reference and he's not a million miles away from how he looked on telly

20160622_121839_zps6nzcsven.jpg

The eye should be green but I wanted it to stand out so went with red ( just like mine was this morning )

20160622_121845_zpsbmpp4jpg.jpg

The control panel ? Was too dark on screen to figure out the colour so I went with a coppery mix and tried to make it look Art Deco (ish)

20160622_154531_zps9uxhq3tb.jpg

20160622_154725_zpspeyt5rme.jpg

The honeycomb thingy got a base coat of gold

A quick dry fit have a look type thing ( the base is only in primer and needs to be painted )

20160622_155122_zpslbhnxkgv.jpg

The holders for the plasma balls ( I think that's what they are ) got a similar treatment to the control panel just in a slightly different shade

20160622_155145_zpsi62wqtwk.jpg

They fit on the pillars either side of the base

20160622_155340_zpsitsk8n33.jpg

Painted the ladder Alcad stainless steel over a semi gloss black base

It's hard to capture with the camera but I sprayed pale burnt metal here and there to try and get a tarnishing effect

20160622_163446_zpsh0qqjcqh.jpg

It sort of works

20160622_163506_zpsm6cow3cf.jpg

Honeycomb shaded

Let's have a look at what we've got so far

Time for decals ( well that's what it says here )

20160622_175052_zpskusmomnl.jpg

What they really mean is cut out the pictures !

20160622_175048_zpsslvggyhp.jpg

So after I got a grown up to cut them out for me I glued them in with PVA and fitted the domes.

They don't look to bad to be honest

The gauge faces weren't such a success, really difficult to cut out and keep circular. A punch would have been handy here, so I punched myself in the face for muffing them up

20160622_181328_zpszkgqyw9m.jpg

So on to plan B, mask and spray the faces and paint the bezels

20160622_184733_zpsveip5dxj.jpg

Not sure if the paper dials will work so will probably just print some in black onto clear decal film but I'll see how I feel tomorrow

20160622_184914_zpsijtjddsb.jpg

I'll have to figure something out one way or the other as it will look pretty odd without anything in those dials

That's fantastic progress for 51 minutes of work!

I really like the 'art deco' panel and the finish on the stairs.

Thanks mate,

I save time by loading the airbrush cup with all the paint colours in the order that I'm going to use them lol

Painted the base with a few shades of grey

20160625_125320_zpsqh9te2yc.jpg

I painted the pillars separately as they get in the way and would make it hard to get into the corners

20160625_125607_zpswrecrixq.jpg

There are some bulkhead lights that need to go on the pillars and these have clear lenses to go on the fronts.

There isn't any bulb detail and it would be obvious that they are missing so I wanted to add something inside. I used small circles of foil for the reflector

I found a clear sprue with some domes in my spares box

20160625_132045_zpsvuk33exc.jpg

And glued them on with PVA

20160625_132105_zpshsnwhmnn.jpg

They are nothing like a bulb but should look ok when seen through the clear parts

The last things to go on are some disc thingies, I primed these and based them in black the other day

20160625_133546_zpspcuqj2xi.jpg

I want to paint these with a couple of shades of Alclad and as you know this is nasty stuff to breath so a mask is a must.

I have to admit that when I first started using an airbrush a few years ago I didn't use one but these days I take no chances and always wear one.

Luckily no permanent damage was caused from my early efforts spraying without the correct PPE

And I am just as sharp as I always wahsbsbddhdhcjfnfnggjvjgngjgjbjghngjbjhhn

20160625_134104_zps1homv5bf.jpg

WARNING ! Boring pics alert !

A bit of aluminium

20160625_134207_zpsacrgvhau.jpg

Then a little pale burnt metal

Finished with a tiny bit of jet exhaust

20160625_134952_zpsbv6l8d75.jpg

And of course with them fixed to the base you can't see the different tones at all lol

20160625_140411_zpspay7my22.jpg

The PVA is taking an age to go clear in those lights

20160625_140440_zpsolqawtpu.jpg

Pretty much finished now.

The control panel is only dry fitted as I still need to sort out something for markings on the gauges
