Paul E
As I had previously alluded to in a previous post, I find that the Photo Etch to be a bit too 2 dimensional for my tastes. So I decided to make my own using brass rod for the main part of the mast and the PE details for the supporting struts. I also cut off the yardarms from the PE mast and glued then to the new 3D mast. Other improvements were making my own antenna as I did for my HMS Somerset build; http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234979406-hms-somerset-f82/page-4 I will let the pictures speak for themselves: Then painted: Then rigged and fitted: Progress continues. Thanks for looking.
Ex-FAAWAFU
Excellent. These apparently small details make a huge difference. Great stuff.

Paul E
Thanks guys, I have to say that I like this kit and it helps that I have a soft spot for the subject which is driving me to add the small details. Foxy, if you are wondering about having fun with this kit, just wait and see what happens with the Minesweeper conversion I have in store for my next build! here's another picture just to be gratuitous: Edited September 9, 2016 by Paul E

Paul E
I know it has been a while since I last made a post on my build of HMS Brereton. But progress has been made even if it has been slow and the end is nigh. First up has been the fitting of the railings on the funnel superstructure with canvas dodgers, which were made out of tissue paper and painted:  Having done that I turned my attention to the boat derrick; yet again I find the PE too two dimensional for my liking so I used some half round plastic strip to bulk out the derrick to a more realistic profile. and then painted: I purchased some Alliance Modelworks 1/350 scale pulleys and rigging for the guy ropes to the derrick: and then fitted the derrick to the main part of the model and added the associated rigging: There are one or two minor things still to do and that will be HMS Brereton finished. Thank you for looking.
Paul E
The final post for HMS Brereton as I have now finished the model, enjoy: I will get round to posting pictures in Ready for Inspection in due course. Thank you for following, and please stay tuned for my next project of a conversion of the same Atlantic Models kit into a Mine Sweeper using my own PE detailing.

Paul E
Thank you very much for the comments, I am really pleased with how HMS Brereton turned out. I have to say that I draw inspiration from many other far better modellers than I on this site, I learn so much and try to emulate it. So being able to give even a little bit back in return makes me grateful.
Paul E
Now that HMS Brereton is finished it is time for me to turn my attention to converting the Atlantic Models kit to a Minesweeper using the Photo Etch that I had designed. I am going to model HMS Wotton; The reference point for the conversion is an article that was published in Model Boats magazine way back in 1987. As well as detail photographs the article also included a nice plan for me to work from: A major part of this conversion hinges around the Photo Etch that I had designed: It would be fair to say that this conversion will require a bit of hacking and scratch building. I must admit I am apprehensive about butchering a £50 model kit but judging how HMS Brereton came out I am sure that it will be worth it. So starting with the hacking, everything that I painted red on the hull as shown in the following picture needs to be removed: This requires careful use of scalpel and file. And here are results of my hack, there one or two minor casualties where I lost a bollard, but these can be readily fixed with some evergreen strip. As can be seen from the photos I have also added the PE checker plate decking as I did for HMS Brereton. Also in common with HMS Brereton I set about making the fairleads from plastic strip and detailing the funnel. I am now at a position where I can start adding my photo etch detailing. Thanks for looking.
rollsroyce
Hi Paul E First build was fantastic and here we go again. Never built with resin and it looks a real skill. Cheers Guy
Paul E
Thanks Guy, my experience with resin builds has been somewhat limited up until now, I don't think you need any special skill as such. What I do think is needed is an understanding that there is not as much detail and if you want to make a detailed model you need to be prepared to add your own. Paul E
I know it has been a while since I last posted but I have not been idle in the intervening period. First up is fitting the PE detail from my PE sheet to the funnel superstructure: Then I have added the hatches to the main deck: I started this build with the intention following a script, but the desire to start scratch building became overwhelming and so I have started on the new bridge superstructure. Progress as follows: Following this any sense or order or control went out of the window, I started wondering what the model would look like with the mast and so I started on that too: I have finally got myself under control. I will continue with the mast build at a later date. However this is the current state of my model of HMS Wotton: I hope this makes up for my prolonged absence. Enjoy.

Paul E
An update on progress, I have added the bridge window details from my PE set to the scratch built bridge and wheelhouse structure: The detailing really does make a difference, I more doors and other small bits to add before the finish with this piece. A further update will follow soon. Thanks for looking. Â

Paul E
More detailing on the bridge and wheel house structure, this time the addition of doors from my PE set: and then with some additional scratch detailing and ammunition lockers added: That is the bridge structure nearly done which I am quite pleased with. Â Thanks for looking.
Paul E
Another update on progress. More scratch building; this time the roof over the sweep winch. The reason for the change is that the kit moulding includes the floats for the Short Scope buoys which were not carried on the Minesweepers. So I had a choice either grind out the buoys from the kit moulding or build my own. As this is a relatively simple structure I chose the latter. More to follow soon. Thanks for looking.
