Auster AOP6 ended at long last

Somehow I'd missed this, Bill, but your tale of giving St D a good kicking are now duly festooned with likes. The transformation to an old kit, very much of its time, is a lesson to us all.

I went to the Salisbury show yesterday (great fun, as always, and escaped with merely a book, a couple of new detail brushes and the usual gash handful of sanding sticks - not a single new kit, which I think is some kind of record for me!). Anyway, as always I was looking through the old kits for sale (one day I will find my Holy Grail 1/48 Dynavector Scimitar), and there were several old Airfix Swordfish. I was wondering to myself why anyone would bother when the new tooling from the same company is so good... but you have answered that question here. Old kits can still make great models!

It looks extremely nice. The camo has gone on beautifully. Wings on please, wings on!
What a lovely model.

Best regards

I regret to report that although the wing 'matting' went well yesterday this morning, in warm dry conditions the Humbrol matt varnish decided to go 'greyout'

I'll pop a pic in later but for now I'm struggling to search out a cure

It's grey dry but if I wet it the grey vanishes

I'm fed up...

I was wondering where the "woe" was hiding as the photo's looked great. Can you do a really fine micromesh wet sand ?

I think I'll be trying the wet'n'dry micromesh

I'm tempted to see if it can clear with a clear varnish layer but I'll most likely be micromeshing

Just 'cos it was Hendie's idea.

;)

John thank you for that old, very charming picture

The curse of Humbrol matt varnish strikes again! Drop kick it through the goal posts of varnish hell! Switch to Alclad matt, sprays nice and fine and never any greying. It's looking superb by the way.

Since I always do what the ladies say I tried that after attempting to polish it smooth with Micromesh

Micromesh just didn't touch the surface even wetted so I tried the other thing

First, this morning's bl*** mess

"A grey pall settled over the mysterious forest and wrapped everything in a deep dull depression..."

Anyway, nuff of the duff movie directions for The Masque Of The Red Death scene one

Here's wot I got

Vincent Price is just off camera, having his slap attended to...

Stoppit

Anyway

memo to Messrs Airfix... Hey guys please don't waste yellow ink on your transfer sheets unless you are going to back them up by a secret undercoat of white..

Doh

P1100889_zpsh8wornj4.jpg

There really are lines of rescue info underneath that extinguisher emblem

And now the first coats of Clear are going on

P1100892_zpspzdko47v.jpg

I am leaving the sides until every other piece has dried

Unfortunately the sanding has damaged the upper layers in places, maybe not enough to show though

This looks like a 'save' Bill. That Humbrol Matt is a nuisance.

Years (13) ago I remember it going milky and ruining an old tool Airfix Defiant that otherwise I'd made look pretty decent :(

Sometimes it would take weeks, if ever, to dry.

I agree on the Alclad II Matt. It's smelly but it works really well.

Don't worry about the paint damage on top; it's 'weathering' :D

Best regards

Tony

Matte coats are the invention of Satan! I've yet to find one I trust or that I can get to reliably work. It looks like you've saved your little Auster, though, Bill.

Regards,

Jason
