1st model in 40 plus years

Started the build of my 1/72 Vulcan bomber last Satarday and i have to be honest it didnt go as badly as i thought. From the threads i read on britmodelers i thought nothing is going to fit,But apart from under the tail section all went fairly simple .

A few moments reared there ugly head during the wings to body part of the build with only some small gaps in the wings .the intakes i was dreading as so much had been said that they were a bad fit ,dry fitted them and they went together ok ,as my mind played tricks on me i thought i had done something wrong but hey ho striaght in .A bit of tinkering and sanding seen the rear section go together but needed a fair amount of filler to get it into place and looking half decent.

Iv decide to go for the smooth look as its going to go from the ceiling so ditched the wheels and access ladders.Cant understand why the model came with the missile and wing racks as i can remember XH558 ever being fitted with these(someone will put me right no doubt)

So its just about ready to paint more than likely going to find loads of scratch marks and so on ,so its off to the car repair shop for some wet n dry paper and some stopper.Painting will be by rattle cans as the medication i take leaves me shaking like a freezing camel.

40 plus years since i have made a model and the models themselves havent changed really, except im a lot older and have to concentrate a lot harder.I,ll post the finished result next week hopefully if it all goes ok.

OF ALL THE THINGS IN LIFE IV LOST ,ONLY MY MIND NEEDS TO BE FOUND.

That Vulcan kit mould is now pushing 35 years old (I'm assuming Airfix 1/72 here) so your 40 year hiatus gives you a head start. Things have only moved on 5 years or so since your last model....

Hi skiny.

Agree with you re the Vulcan, I think it is a nice kit. When it was first released we all thought it was the best thing since sliced bread!

re. the wing racks, I think you may have a Falklands war 'issue'. I think that had the 'Black Buck' underwing missile launchers (were they Shrikes, or something?)

I think you will find a section some where on here that will help you post your pictures direct. I had to ask Mike for help (he took pity on me) as I am a technophobe at heart.

All the best.

Great progress skiny and encouraging! I have one in the stash and, like you, other posts have made me a bit reluctant to start it.

Can't wait to see your with the paint on! :)

Correct. The Black Buck missions were carried out by 301 series engines Vulcans, which had been designed to carry Skybolt. The hastily constructed pylons (by station workshops I believe) carried mainly ECM pods, borrowed off the Bucc boys, but also, as you state, Shrike missiles (A/R Martels were trialed, but America donated the AGM-45s)

This of course leads to one of the biggest complaints about the Airfix Vulcan (other than the fit, raised panel lines, age, yada yada...) the incorrect exhausts. As the kit was brought out post Falklands and it was assumed 90% of builders would make XM607, "301" exhausts were moulded on.

Of course, nowadays, it seems everyone wants to build XH558, which has the totally different 201 Series exhausts....

I think your fin is leaning slightly to port. Might be the photos, but if not can you correct it before the paint goes on?

Iv just read this post and after looking in daylight your correct, any advice to give on how to straighten it.I thought hair dryer for a few minutes then bend as needed.

update as well. had to rip out the bomb bay door as it kept sinking and filler just wouldent hold it in place ,so iv used the missile covering and will fill in.(i hope)

Regards the grey - Medium Sea Grey from the "factory" but it faded rather well, so the choice is yours there. Neither is wrong.

Looks like a good un, get some primer down and check it over seeing as youve put some work in already.

Well the weather hasnt been good and iv been stuck in being unwell so not much done this week.I had hoped to have paint on by today but only managed a few coats of undercoat and more sanding.i felt a bit better today so i sat and masked the vulcan.im still going for camo all over but unsure as to what color i should paint the missile(bomb bay doors a disaster so went with the missile)

On masking up found a few more spots that will need sanding on the grey but im not going to tear off the tape and blue tack.iv found the blue tack to be hard even though i warmed it on the radiator so im going for play dou next time.Went to take a few photos but the batterys ran out and i cant chase them(huh)no i cant manage the stairs by myself so only one photo .

sorry photobucket is still not letting me share the way iv read. Its only giving me two options and the forum wont allow these options. So its another fickr

Can you remove it, and refit it? Hairdryer could distort more than just the fin if you are not careful

I did manage to get it looking ok but the next morning it had reverted back to where it was ,not going to chance removing it ,the more i mess with it the more pieces i will have. For what its worth it getting susspended from the cieling at an angle so it wont be noticed.aa,and if your looking that close at it you shouldnt be in my room..

Dear me,What a carry on iv had with this build, wrong color, paint camo disaster, spray paint upset, who said modeling was a form of relaxation.,Im at my wits end.Never mind, fianly got the colors im happy with and over spray delt with i have finaly got the color on,I know, I know it should have been weeks ago but iv spent some odd days in hospital. In the end i gave up on spray cans and hand painted all the camo.Need to get the right brushes but enquireys went unanswered.lots of brush marks but its on pretty thick so hoping i can sand them out .I should have went for wheels down as im made it wheels up to hang from the ceiling but the wife wont have it (to child like she says,But i am)Put some markings on the missile with a cocktail stick just to make it look a bit better.decals to do (im not looking forward to that) then some bits n bobs to put on then a couple of coats of clear coat. then bobs ya uncle.Still cant figure out how to post images on here so its down to flickr numbers again.
