BRDM-2UM Russian Run About. Now ready for paint.

How do chaps,

This will be my small contribution to the shenanigans.

Trumpeters BRDM-2UM. Got this of fleabay a couple of years back....but I thought I'd bought the BRDM-2 and only realized after I'd paid for it! But, it's a nice kit of a fairly unusual subject.

After doing some Googling around for a bit of inspiration, I came across some info (Wikipedia ) that said the vehicle was quite rare in Soviet service as it was built for export. As luck would have it, the GDR used them in their recce regiments. I've got some GDR markings that I can snaffle from another kit (Dragon Shilka) so all is not lost.

The kit has around 220 parts so even I should be able to finish it within the generous time scale of the GB!

One question if I may, I've seen that the GDR used a three tone camo (green, grey and black I believe) on their tanks during the mid 80's and was wondering if the same applied to wheeled AFV's? If not good old plain green would suffice.

More once the build starts.

Regards,

Steve

Good to see another uncommon subject in this GB. That's a lot of parts for a small and relatively simple machine. I expect this will be a highly detailed kit.

How do chaps,

The build begins!

Col: The kit is quite detailed and includes a part interior which is rather nice. Some close up's of the sprues (finally binned photobucket and gone over to flickr. Soooo much quicker to upload and use)

This will need a bit of filing and fettling.

Both side done.

Rough terrain wheels are up next. These were a bit of a fiddle to put together but are quite nicely detailed. You have the option of having them deployed or stowed. I've gone for the stowed option.

Dry fitted in their cubby hole.

Springs fitted. A bit of care was needed here to ensure all four were sat level as the location points were a little slack.

Next up is the drive train and interior. This is going together rather well so far. I've decided not to use the rubber tyres for the main wheels in the kit. Although they are really nicely detailed, I don't think they would hold paint too well. I've got a set of DEF Model Resin Sagged Wheels in the post.

More to fllow soon,

Regards,

Steve

How do chaps,

Work has continued and the interior is now just about done. Nothing overly complicated. No radios are supplied which I find a bit odd, considering it's a Command Vehicle! :mental:

Interior bits and bobs.

Propeller for the water jet. Looks a bit kike a cat carry box! This part took a bit of fettling to fit together.

Had notice from fleabay that my Resin Wheel Set has been dispatched :waiting: so once I've got these I will finish the drive train and axles. Just in case i need to hack bits off in order for them to fit. I'm hoping that they just slot onto the axle stubs :)

This is going together at a rate of knots. If all continues well I may even start a second build!

More to follow.

Steve

Hi Steve. That looks like a rather nice kit and it looks like you are are off to a good start. I like the idea of some internal areas and the detailing overall looks good.

Kind regards,

Stix

Thanks Stix & Col.

The details is rather nice and the interior adds a bit of interest to the model.

The resin wheels out of the box. Very nice tred and hub detail. They also come with a set of masks! :coolio:

Work continued with the last of the internal details in the rear. None of this is seen however!

Axles completed and fitted to the leaf springs. Shocks and various other fiddly bits fitted. The shocks look a bit on the puny side to me, considering the real vehicle would travel over some pretty rough ground.

Now onto the resin wheels. The holes for the axle stubs are too shallow and the wheels sit too far out from the arches.

26661580182_328f132599_b.jpgDSC_0014 by Steve Witton, on Flickr

So, after a bit of thought (about 5 seconds worth) I snipped the axle stubs off and re offered the wheel up. RESULT!!! B)

Most of the work now involves various knobs and twiddlies being fitted to the upper hull.

Comparison shot with a M4A1 Sherman. This is a bit of a beast of a machine! :blink2:

All for now and thanks for dropping by.

It certainly is a larger machine than I expected. Nice work getting those lovely resin wheels to sit correctly into the body.

  • 2 months later...

How do chaps,

Thought I'd missed the boat with this then I saw that the GB runs to 14th August! I've not picked this up since early May due to one thing or another (mainly getting the shed and garden sorted) but here's some progress from today.

I've decided not to bother with the interior as you can't see a lot throught the open hatches and I'm too lazy to paint it up!

Vision blocks fitted and top on the main hull.

Started to add the myriad of twidly bits to the exterior.

Some more bits to add and then it's ready for some paint. I may even get this finished before the end date!

More to follow soon (hopefuly)

Steve

Thanks!

The model is now in black primer and drying off. Only problem is I forgot to mask the vision blocks before I sprayed! 😕 Ah well I'll just have to paint em in later.

Steve
