Tim Moff
Also doing an old 1/72 Harrier GR5 from Airfix - same as the later GR7 kit, it has about 3 different nose options! First of the Harrier II 'Big Wing' versions, allowing a larger payload. Again, raised lines, basic kit, but its there in the stash and just makes the 1980's as it replaced the GR3's in 1989..... Got some modeldecal 100 decals with a choice of ,1 Sqn, 233 OCU, SAOEU and 3 (Fighter) Sqn - with RAFG in mind I think it will be 3 (F) Sqn as it convertedto GR5 in May 1989.... Oooops.... PhantomBigStu
Didn't know the gr5 eligible, have this kit in the stash, though I know Im not going to build it given the lack of suitable paint in acrylics, watching with interest, great job on the frog buccaneer btw
Col.
Nice one Tim. I'm always happy to see a Harrier getting built and this old Airfix kit isn't a bad one.

In the stash so kinda killing 2 birds with 1 stone - I have a 1/48 GR3 but thats a Falklands build....saves buying a 1/72 GR3.... Paints wise gonna have to be the Airfix Enamel, or maybe Mr Color equivalent with a bit of eye matching....
Hockeyboy76
Good luck Tim. Got to love a Harrier.
Tim Moff
Made a start with getting the parts off the sprues, some priming etc.... Its a start, hope I don't have the canopy issues that Stu is having - a test fit showed it looked a bit wide....will have to see....
Tim Moff
Got on some more today: Quick test fit and things seem fine Hope to get some more done!
Jabba
Nice start Tim. I arrived at RAF Gutersloh towards the end of 1989, and these were flying about making a racket. The picture of the one that is being fished out of the river that is at the end of Guts runway. The locals were quite worried because od possible contamination. The early GR5s also had a lot of problems with wiring, which was capston stuff and would burst into flames at times without warning. Someone who work on them would have better details, I worked on Pumas then. Edited May 28, 2016 by Jabba
theplasticsurgeon
Yo Tim nice looking build so far. Here's my build of the same kit, with nose for a later version.http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234960324-airfix-harrier-gr7/
PhantomBigStu
Good to see this progressing, hopefully yours makes it, though not going to give up on mine untill the deadline passes without a new canopy appearing

Here's my build of the same kit, with nose for a later version. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234960324-airfix-harrier-gr7/ Cool - have the kit in the stash too - did the bombs yellow 'live' stripes come on the decal sheet? None on mine, may be painting!!

Tim Moff
Bit of 'clamp action' with the main fuse/join... Getting on, starting to look like a Harrier II. Not much in the way of references for the GR5. Also got the yellow paint out for the Bombs! Edited May 30, 2016 by Tim Moff
Tim Moff
Who needs decals for armament bands on bombs!!? Granted a bit wide, but will do the job me thinks! State of play at the moment: Awaiting my paint from Hannants, getting there, soon be time to get the canopy on and some primer on. Gonna go for grey, with a bit of traditional pre-shading, some white etc, don't theink the black base will do much justice on the colour scheme in this scale and the aircraft were pretty much brand new. The pics above show a maybe 8'' edge at the front of the intake that appears a darker green, will mask and paint with Hum 163 DG, also the inside. Tim Moff
Bit more done, just awaiting the paint delivery, most of the main construction finished - just need to get the intakes and refueling probe on, canopies set, I can then get on with priming/pre-shading!
Tim Moff
Good to see this progressing, hopefully yours makes it, though not going to give up on mine untill the deadline passes without a new canopy appearing Had similar issues with the canopy - I think it may have cracked whilst gripping it onto the rail....will have to see. May try the one from the GR7 I have if so, go back to Airfix for a spare.... Paint arrived... Primer on (take pics later). Again a family trip to Devon will halt progress for a while! maybe get the pre-shade on next week(end?!) - soon be time for paint!
PhantomBigStu
using the proper paint I see, interested to see just how my mix and off the shelf combo compares
Hockeyboy76
Tim, Posted this in PhantomBigStu's harrier build. It may help you too Shame about your canopy conundrum, but I may have a solution for you If you still have the front windshield. Years ago, can't remember exactly when, I had to recover a GR9 from a civvie airport where it had diverted into. The pilot was carrying out air to air refuelling, he got it wrong/something went wrong & the refuelling basket shattered the canopy. If you can bodge both sides on your shattered canopy maybe you can 're-create this'. Hope this helps.
Tim Moff
Got the Lichen Green on, not a great pic, but felt it a lil to dark... So I added a lil white and it looked a bit better against references and distant memory!! The colour difference from the pot to what I airbrushed on can be seen clearly Once dry, will mask off for the NATO green.
PhantomBigStu
Good progress, and good to see what the lichen green looks like, quite happy with the mix I cam out with compared to that
Tim Moff
Good progress, and good to see what the lichen green looks like, quite happy with the mix I cam out with compared to that Yes yours looks spot on, had to tinker with the 'proper' paint!
Tim Moff
Not convinced with the Lichen Green, am going to get Mr Color 122 and Mr Color 312 to see if its any better
Tim Moff
re-done the lighter Lichen green, them masked up - fun...NOT!! NATO IR on and masking off. Xtracolor paint is nice and glossy, easy for decals.
PhantomBigStu
One benefit of being hairy sticker, less masking, looking good
