BAe Hawk T1/T1a

I want to add a BAe Hawk T1/T1a to my stash, but would like to know whether it is considered that the Italeri version is better that the Airfix version. I know that the Airfix one has been around for many years in different guises, but that the Italeri version is much newer, and twice the price of the Airfix kit. So I would welcome advice on which one to go for please.

Thanks,

John

Hi John

I've got both and prefer the Italeri version despite it's pointy nose. I'm a sucker for the crisper detailing.

There's a bit more chatter and opinion here...http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234967185-148-bae-hawk-italeri-or-airfix/

Whichever one you decide on I'm sure it'll be a cracker.

HTH

Cheers

Gaz

edit: I also meant to add that locally at least, prices of the Italeri kit have dropped quite a bit in the last couple of years.

Weren't the Italeri and Airfix Hawks released within a year of each other?

Looking at Scalemates, it reckons that the Airfix one came out in 2003 while the Italeri one was 2008.

The Airfix is heavily based on the 1975/6 Xx154/6 kit and in parts a direct upscale - look at the u/c doors the thickness of a Koenigstiger's front armour, with the mainwheel doors retaining the horizontal stiffeners not present on series a/c AFAIK. Shapewise, it's quite accurate. Detail is in most cases approximate. I did a detailed check when the kit was new and IIRC not a single panel line is where it's supposed to be (based on the Granger drawings and crosschecks with a lot of pics). As the surface details are equal width throughout, it tends to look lifeless. The flap hinges are just triangles with a blob on each side. The shapes of the cockpit interior parts suggest gaps all round IIRC, but as I put the kit back in its box for a day when I feel really masochistic, I can't be definite. Decals from the Humbrol era were notoriously bad, but this should not be an issue with later releases. So if you like fun, go with Airfix ;-)
