Hunter Rose
Okay, I normally dont do multiple projects, but this is a commission build for by best mate. He bought a vinyl recast (I know, evil!) of the old Horizon kit and wants me to do it as Spidey 2099, if your not familiar with that costume heres a pic: - I've always thought the 2099 looked really cool so I was more than happy to do it for him. Heres the kit, its white cheap as chips Thai vinyl Which means the surface looks like this, oh boy! Not too worried though as I'll be filling in ALL those web line details, so lots of putty will be going down anyway (as you can see just bought a new tube of squadron white in preparation!) And this is where its at at the moment, used a heat gun to warm up the vinyl and used a scalpel to remove all the flash, and managed to not cut myself so hoorah! From dry fitting as I did it I can tell already the fit is horrendous, so lots of reshaping and filling in my future! I want to paint it as one piece so I need to get it all together filled with plaster and joint gaps sorted, then I'll tackle that surface detail. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Okay time to pull my finger out and do.some modelling! Finally got a chance to get some work done on this. I filled the legs and torso with plaster, for weight and stability. First thing I'm tackling is the bent leg, the fit is truly awful! I'll be pinning it in place by drilling a hole through the back of the heel for one end at at the other I'll pack it out with greenstuff so i can use just a small bit of filler to cover the big gap from above. Next up I'll whack the greenstuff in and get it superglued together so i can start filling the gap. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Grabbed some more shed time and was able to get the legs sorted. Got the lower leg onto the left leg I started, put a big blob of greenstuff in and applied some superglue and got it in place. I knew there would be a big gap but now I've got a greenstuff solid base underneath I can easily fill it. Then I got the right leg together, again drilled a couple of holes and got some wire in to pin it, there was a bit of a gap at the top of the lower half so I packed it out with more greenstuff and got it in place. Drilled my holes right through the crotch bit so I could use just 2 bits of wire for both legs for strength Then both legs were superglued in place. And I know the bond is strong because while holding it I managed to glue my fingers together  thankfully I had some cellulose thinners to hand which sorted it out, cant believe I did that! Oh the joys of modelling. Thanks for looking, more soon
Will Vale
Always educational watching you solve problems with these vinyl kits, I've learned a lot from your earlier builds. For the horrible surface, I had a lot of luck with a Miliput wash (Miliput thinned with water) massaged into the surface and then finished with Alclad filler-primer. That was on Judge Anderson whose face was basically a sponge It didn't seem to destroy the details either. HTH, Will
Hunter Rose
Cheers Will! When I saw the surface it made me think of your similar bubble trouble too, isn't vinyl great!! Nothing like getting in at the deep end Been working on the sculpt last couple of days, and I also am bringing an old mech model I did a few years ago back to life, which will soon appear in the ready for inspection gallery, but will start filling the details on the legs today
Hunter Rose
Okay time to update! Not a lot of updates as I've just been sanding the bejesus out joints and web detail! I've got the hip joints pretty much sorted, im still filling/sanding/priming (ad nauseum) the right leg and made a start on the left at the minute. y Aaaand the filing/sanding/priming the legs will continue, and I'll make a start on the torso. PhantomMajor
Wow you're really smashing the guts out of that vynal kit!
Hunter Rose
Yeah like crazy Major! Im only just getting to the point where its filling out the web detail, but im like you i only getva chance to model in my lunchbreaks, so time consuming processes like this seem to take forever! Okay so for what its worth im updating this, but nothing exciting to see just more leg sanding (yawn). After stag do's, sorting new car, and various other things sapping my time its nice to get back in the shed! So yeah slow going but nearly there, im going to try something different for the rest of the body. I've got some milliput which I'll smooth over into the gaps which i can be more accurate with rather than just smearing on the squadron (though I'll probably use a combination of both) Thanks for looking, more soon

Hunter Rose
Thanks Will, oh jesus yes! Ive nearly used up all my sandpaper, and its still just the legs! Hoping using the milliput will speed up my progress.
PhantomMajor
You have my sympathy, I hate filling and sanding with a passion. How are you going to replace the lost webbing detail on the legs if you don't mind me asking
Crayons
Ah the joys of crappy Thai vinyl/resin. Doing a good of it considering what you have to work with. I can highly recommend Mr. Dissolved Putty from the Mr. Hobby range for dealing with those pinholes. Great adhesion in the smallest of pinholes and requires very little sanding/cleanup. Used it on many figures over the years and it has yet to let me down.

S5 modeller
It's looking good now, much better without the web detail. It spoils it, in my opinion. Matt

Sgt.Squarehead
What about Perfect Plastic Putty.....I just tried it for the first time and I'm blown away, you can just wipe the excess away with a damp cloth, no sanding needed whatsoever! https://www.deluxematerials.co.uk/en/scale-plastics/87-perfect-plastic-putty-5060243901095.html

Hunter Rose
Thanks for the tips guys, not heard of that product before Sgt sounds interesting. And Major I do thin putty but i thin my squadron with cellulose thinners and was worried about a bad reaction with the cheap vinyl. I'll have a go with the milliput in the next update and show how i get on

Hunter Rose
If I'm using squadron I'll just use my finger, if I thin it with cellulose I'll use a brush. I've started having a go with milliput, for that I'm using a couple of my my metal soap/wax carving tools.
Hunter Rose
Well I've cracked iut the milliput, never used it before and im actually really happy with it. Edges are easy to feather with wet fingers, just been putting some thin bits over and smooth them. I think this will definitely speed this up! The legs are pretty much done, I'll continue using the milliput on the torso and I'll get it pinned so i can sort that join out too. Sgt.Squarehead
Milliput is awesome stuff, especially when any sort of sculpting is required (allow it to firm up then attack it with damp wax-carvers, it's great stuff) but for some jobs I'm convinced PPP is the way forward, especially anything you want to do fast, Milliput's long cure time is both an advantage and a disadvantage. BTW - You can also get Milliput Fine White, which might be of use to you later on. Both types can be moistened right down to a 'slip' like consistency and will still set rock hard (but perhaps a little more brittle than usual).
Will Vale
I like Miliput more than I thought I would too. I tend to put it in the "too slow, can't be bothered" category and get out the super-glue, but it's not that bad really. Especially if you mix slightly more hardener than resin - that speeds up the cure time In extreme circumstances I've also painted over it without waiting for it to cure Spidey is looking good btw.
