Changing scope of GBs AFTER they have been voted through

Recommended Posts

Recently two GBs that I was interested in have modified the rules after being voted through to the calender in both cases restricting considerably the choice of subject matter.

May I suggest that in future the rules are defined and fixed BEFORE the voting takes place? We have rules against lobbying/canvassing for votes but suggesting subjects will be allowed and later excluding them comes pretty close.

I will admit to having bigger eyes than ability, I have a terrible track record in finishing anything let alone GBs (see my signature below :weep: ) so may not be the best person to raise this. If everybody disagrees then I'll happily recant but it certainly seems unfair on those who do other than aircraft and, to a lesser extent, AFVs. :2c:

I have to agree with you on this one.

Not only do people do prep work on gathering info on their builds based on the rules of eligibility for a GB they also purchase stuff for that build. Whether it's decals, resin bits or an actual kit it's then it's hardly fair to inexplicably change the rules, especially as the title of the GB becomes inaccurate to say the least. The narrowing of the scope of eligibility in terms of subject is hardly helpful either, now I only build aircraft so I am not affected but I do like to see the work others put into their specialised subjects and feel it would be a shame if only aircraft or aircraft+armour GB's became the norm.

I now take a back seat in the organizing and running of the GBs so I'm a bit confused. Which GBs are you referring to and what were the changes? Can you please give some specific examples?

Without an example, I can only generalise. GBs almost take on a life of their own and do evolve. If as you say the scope changed, did you challenge the proposed change? Did you alert Enzo to the change? Nothing can be done if the Mods don't know there is a problem.

Hi Mish

Currently there is a bit of a bun fight on the Red Storm Rising GB about scope of involvement and now seems to be heading to aircraft and AFVs acting on the Inter German border only.

Recently the Battle of Britain GB had a similar issue ending up with a remit that covered only active aircraft and requiring proof that anything else was on an airfield at the time. For vehicles this is virtually impossible as the relevant documents didn't survive.

I understand that GBs will evolve but given the length of time before they are voted through I think it reasonable that rules be fixed before the vote. My good friend Shermaniac managed for the Made in Britain GB on his first try, we had several telephone conversations about it at the time.

I have withdrawn from the Vignette GB as its essence has changed.

From its initial concept and proposal of a scene totally on a board nominally 6x6 inches [or 36 square inches] with nothing beyond that it now allows anything to over hang, with no restriction on how much

So in theory, or practice, you can mount a 1/350 ship on a board 3 x 12 inches and it doesn't matter that almost all of it will overhang the ends.

As you've mentioned, the NATO v Warsaw Pact GB issue is now resolved. Please don't call it the Red Storm Rising GB... it woz that book wot caused all the trubble in the first place. It seems that the final list has pleased a few people.

In the words of hundreds of politicians recently... "lessons have been learned" :) I believe the fault is mine as I was willing to accept a statement about the spirit of the GB which could be misinterpreted. It won't be happening again.

As for the Vignette GB, I think that's a relatively minor issue. I know that Black Knight is engaging in reductio ad absurdam but the point is well made. I'll keep an eye on things there.

Thanks to all for the input.

Hi. I'm not sure that the guidelines for the Vignette GB changed after the vote. I've just checked through the posts before the voting and there were a couple of references to things overhanging the sides but nothing stated anywhere that things must absolutely not overhang. I suggested someone's choice of kit may overhang too much and that I was going to keep mine inside but that seems to be it. Neu, Blastvader and I had long discussions about the guidelines once the Vignette GB got the go ahead and what we proposed was passed by both Mish and Enzo (Enzo and Mish can confirm this). The only reason we decided to allow some overhang was to be more inclusive. I don't think the guidelines indicate anything goes but I'm prepared to be proved wrong.

Kind regards,

Stix
