Airfix defiant as night fighter 1/48

I don't know 100% everything about the defiant but I was hoping to build an all black nightfighter version, can this be done straight from the box or does the kit need modifying in any way.

You can do a straight NF.I without radar, or a radar-equipped NF.Ia, but not an NF.II. You will need decals obviously. Xtradecal sheet X48157 has a couple of suitable aircraft on it. The standard Airfix kit comes with the night-fighter exhausts as an option, also the radar antennae in case you need them.

has a few NF I photos, note the use of RDM 2A black paint, very matt and prone to weather badly, allowing a more interesting model that plain black
