perdu
The horsie and his harness look terrific I must say. Your driver looks like he has been savaged by his own mustaches however. Not unsalvageable though, just cut in some skin tones with a fine brush. A bit of a trim as you might say. I do a lot of face fur with a pencil. A clear coat turns the graphite from silvery to black. It does mean I have a lot of brunette figures... I might give that a go Tzulscha, this is only a facial recognition test anyway, he is destined to get darker brown, almost black hairyness after I get his eyeballs done And yes I know the eyes are scary too at the moment Pencil, I did wonder about the silveryness Obviously well worth a try I was considering adding facial details with watercolour pencils too
keefr22
Yes it probably would, I'm just having one of my sessions of not quite liking it lately too many sessions of it not quite setting and the like but re-inspired I might whip off the plasticene and whip up a dollop of Milli I have to admit Bill, I was quite surprised you hadn't used Milliput as you're the master of using it for canopy moulds & the like. I have to admit to hating the stuff personally as I never seem to be able to mix it properly & end up having those non setting issues!
Vicarage Vee
Loving the work on the horse and tack, smashing stuff. If you don't want to use Milliput, would it be feasible to carefully cut the plasticine into two halves. Cast them in resin, and then reassemble? That way you can retain the nice curves but also the crucial snug fit?
perdu
Yes I did think about casting a collar (or two!) but I was having 'stale brain syndrome' and simply went for the modelling clay as a'quick fix'. Wasn't that going to happen huh? No I've decided to do it proper, out with another humungeous sheet of clingfilm next huh Miliput tonight....... At least it won't distort slightly every time I walk by.
Hamden
Like your work on the tack so far If you don't get on with Miliput would Tamiya's two part epoxy equivalent be any better/easier to use? Roger
perdu
Good question Roger, I've never tried it Can it be rolled out like Milli or plasticine? Should I hang fire on whipping off the plasticine collar 'til I can find some to try out?
Hamden
Tamiya epoxy can be used just the same as Miliput armour modellers roll it out thin to make tarpaulins as well as for adding lumps and bumps Just type in Tamiya epoxy putty in toys & games on Amazon Roger Edited August 5, 2016 by Hamden
hendie
excellent work on those buckles Bill - really fine!. I've used two part epoxy clay - admittedly not Tamiya, but several other brands - they are good for what they are but I find that they set rather quickly for my liking. Tamiya's may well be different Just as an FYI - there are also several brands of air drying modelling clay on the market that might do the job
perdu
Quick setting sounds like just exacterrley wot I need Hendie Off to LMS tomorrow in 'seek mode or it'll have to be Amazon Or Das which the LMS does stock, how long does Das take to dry out? Tzulscha
I suddenly realized that I'm not sure that what I call 'plasticene' and what you guys call 'plasticene' is the same thing. I am familiar with an oil based clay with a sulphur binder. Kids non-hardening modeling clay... Yes?
perdu
That is why we call plasticene too Tzulscha I have used it before for various, less important modelling tasks If you use some old stuff, well modified by hand-dirt, paint and Klear it changes to a more stable medium that is very dry and flexible It was easy to remove it from the horse's neck and came away undamaged so I can refit it if the epoxy putty doesn't work
keefr22
Or Das which the LMS does stock, how long does Das take to dry out? When i used some to 'landscape' my abortive model railway. it (probably obviously!) depended on thickness - couple of mm was a couple of hours, 6-7 mm overnight. perdu
Tried Das Didn't like Das Cant get used to Das...try something else The chap in the LMS says he cannot get Tamiya Putty due to some kind of complex EU (maybe) regulations "Some people can stock it because they have hoops jumped and import sorted" I have decided to use Milliput again So Neddy got a new scarf and a new collar and the bulges on his 'saddle' that carry the shaft straps close to the shafts (All these terms are utter rubbish but they're all my guesswork allows in the esoteric field of 'oss 'arnessery) Anyway here's the latest This tack will be painted in a day or so The Milli is drying and I'm off to The Ace Cafe tomorrow in the Midget When the basic tack is sorted Neddy and the cab will be stuck to the cobble street to allow further fixings to be bunged on Most of this build is in the bag If I ever get Jolyon right Cheers and thanks for looking in Edited August 8, 2016 by perdu
keefr22
Nice work again Bill, that collar looks just as good & no risk of any (now possibly non-existent!) oil leachiing out of plasticene & turning Neddy's neck into a gooey mess! I'm still mighty impressed by those plasticard buckles & straps too! Enjoy your trip to the Ace! Keith

perdu
Oh yes, deciding at the moment whether to utilise Tamiya tape for some of the harness and of course cutting 10thou plasticard for other parts of it Soon be time to decide whether to carry on with Joleon or start again with some pieces of Airfix Connoisseur range figures and REDO FROM START Tape and plasticard already painted in base colour German Brown from Vallejo Cutting proceeds... Vicarage Vee
I have managed to use dental floss for stirrup leathers and other tack before. It's not perfect but for something under tension it is pretty good. Just an idea of an option.
