NjB's Belkits Ford Escort RS1600

Recommended Posts

Nice update Nick! Shame the roll cage is out of focus on the interior pics...!! :tease:

That's a very nice bit of metalworking, those lamp brackets aren't the easiest things to replicate! Amazing the things you forget in 40 years, like those rivets in the Cibies, I don't recall those at all!

Merry Christmas to you & yours too!

I mentioned this on a different thread, but for a slightly 'used' and really 3D effect, try spraying Tamiya smoke onto the wheels, but from behind.

The 'spokes' will get a shaded effect at the rear  but still be cleaner at the front, which is what happens with real wheels.

A great build.

Roy.

Some nice progress there Nick.

I trust you found your missing tyres OK then?

I've finally found the car I'll be building my Makinen version as. Eventually...

I've brought a Reji decal set for the 1969 Monte Carlo Twin Cams. And will be building BEV 782G. A bit of conversion work needs to be done to the shell as well as the Scale Production Twin Can engine I've somehow acquired 😂😂

I'll be using your build as reference when the time comes 🙂

Happy New Year to all!! Something of a catch up . . .

Ashley, I did manage to find the tyres - purely by accident and not where I expected but that's so often the way. Good luck with BEV - always thought that looked a bit of a beast and at least you'll have the headlamp covers in the kit.

Roy, took up your tip and sprayed some smoke from behind - I think it worked but my metallic grey is reasonably dark to start with so it may not show up as well as on silver. Anyway, it's done - thanks for the tip.

Thanks for dropping by Blackdog, and thanks for the compliment Mark. I'm just hoping I can get the weathering somewhere near as good as your Citroen van - without the rust though!!

In the run up to Christmas, I started work on the area that worried me most and something I've touched on but not described any ideas for the fix - in case it didn't work!! I mentioned in an earlier post the rather blocky section of the windscreen rubbers which I softened the edges and slightly reduced the height of. My worry though was the expanse of black paint that surrounded the front and rear screens - I knew I had to get the silver plastic weather strip / filler / seal represented somehow. My first instinct was to scribe out some sort of channel but after the initial floor channel scribing decided to give that a miss. The second idea was to cut a thin strip out of Bare-Metal foil and (somehow!) stick this on. The main problem with that is that the metal strip would be on the rubber rather than in it. So I bit the bullet and reversed the idea, ie, covered the rubber in Bare-Metal foil and then painted the rubber on top. I've never used BMF before so wasn't sure of its characteristics; for example, can it be masked? (I still don't know because I haven't tried.)

So I painted freehand . . .

It doesn't look too bad bearing in mind this is nearly twice the size of the model. I was feeling quite happy over Christmas and looking forward to getting on with it the following Wednesday - decalling could begin!

So Wednesday duly arrived. I woke up stupidly early so as I could get to work (as in office) and start the decorating. I started with the large offside blue stripe which all lined up ok and applied some microsol and set so's it'd cling to the arches. After some ten minutes I applied another dose of softener but carelessly caught the edge that slightly tore and wrapped itself in on itself and proved impossible to sort. AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!

I put a wanted post up but - not surprisingly - didn't get a response so I'm hoping that the LHS in Swindon is getting one in for me this week - I'll find out later.

So in the meantime, I've been adding light lenses to light bowls - they look really good; all credit to Belkits. And making up the boot spring-clips . . .

Flash insisted on flashing so this looks a little washed out detail-wise. I've got most of the sub assemblies sorted now so after the decalling is done and panel lines coloured, it shouldn't(!!) take too long . . .

All the best,

Nick

Many thanks, Andy. I'll see if I can get some more pics before joining the bits together.

A huge THANK YOU to Mark, mbdesignart, for donating a set of blue stripes from his kit.

And Ashley, if you see this, can you tell me what image is on the front of your copy of 'Works Escorts in Detail'?

Hello Nick, just catching up with the thread & saw the above - apologies, but I completely missed your wanted post. I have a sheet of the decals from the old Narton kit you would have been welcome to, but I'm glad that Mark has sorted it for you. If you have any other disasters give us a shout!

Very nice work on that chrome trim, your method has worked very well indeed!

Thanks for thinking of me, Keith!

Ashley, that's the same as I have. But everywhere I've looked for it has had a MkI on the cover which is what I've been trying to find. In desperation, I phoned the publishers this morning to be told that the image changed to the MkII just before printing. So there aren't two versions after all . . .

I thought for a sec that there was a second edition lol. And then which I have and what the differences were lol. There must be a few printed with the mk1 on the cover or else there wouldn't be pics of it. A very rare edition then if it changed to a mk2 just before print lol.

The pics with the MkI are as it was originally planned and issued like that as a placeholder image for the book. Trouble is, no vendor has bothered to replace it. The image you show is the same as on the publisher's website. There were no books printed with the MkI cover image.

Nick,

I thought I'd make a start on my kit and hadn't gone through your full WiP thread in a while until I gave up on attempting a test fitting the floor pan into the body. It appears the inner arches foul on the sills despite me trying as much prying apart as I'm willing to and capable of with only one pair of hands. I see you have cut out the front arches, are you planning to or have you done the same on the rear or is the removal of the front ones  sufficient to ease fitment? I can't detect any mods on your photos. Also have you done a test fit now the roll cage is complete? Apologies if I've missed something along the way.

Thanks

Mark

Don't panic I have succeeded. I started from the other end, doh! That being starting at the front and working to the back with the aid of a screwdriver. I think I may shave the inner arches anyway before I get too far along and with additional parts added it won't play.

Hi Mark,

I did mention this at the very end of my second post. I was quite worried to begin with fearing that flexing the fairly rigid plastic would cause paint to crack and maybe windows to pop out. I removed the front arches as part of my inner wing modification which may have helped the attachment a bit. Anyway, you've got it sorted now.

I have to thank you again for helping me out with the stripes again.

All the decalling is done and the body has been joined to the floor / interior - I was a little nervous about this bearing in mind all the changes I made, particularly the roll cage and addition of bare-metal foil to the window apertures. I cut the side windows and windscreen into separate parts leaving the rear side windows and back window together. These were glued in with a bit to be desired in terms of fit - the front screen could now be centred effectively halving the slight gap that was apparent when clipping the windows in as one piece. I used Gator's Grip to fix and also fill the slight gaps. I've started attaching various bits and pieces. The windows are very clear if not perfect optically - I did worry about seeing the effort I'd put in on the interior but it's ok. Before the door windows were fitted, I 'opened' them which looks quite effective.  I took a couple of not very good pics at the decalling stage and things have moved on a bit since. At our club meeting last night, one of our members, Phil Jones, took a few pictures for me so I'll post as soon as I receive them.

Lovely!!

Don't recall twin rear callipers back in the day though Nick? Think it might be a bit overbraked in the back end...?!

I think it was good that Belkits gave the rally plates as they were before the start of the rally, without 'Tony's tape' holding them on as at the end!

I dunno about the brakes - I just wanted to get on with it!! Although the grooved front discs gave me a momentary pause . . . It's going to be difficult to see anything past the wheel spokes anyway.

Looking rather fine Nick, but someones nicked your bricks :D  One small point about the CIBIE logos, I think that the white bits in the 'B' & 'E' should be yellow.

Re the handbrake, here is a period shot of FEV 1H, which may or may not apply to your car, and could be completely useless?
