mbdesignart
Brilliant. At least the next few shouldn't take 12 months to build. Thanks for being the pathfinder, you've helped me along with my build. Tip for superfine stretched sprue - hold a piece over a flame, I find a candle works best, until it catches light blow out the flame and stretch, if it melts into 2 pieces don't panic join whilst hot and pull. Nick Belbin
Thank you very much for the kind comments, gents. I've managed to get the stone guard grill on the front this evening. I used a little bit of fine mesh supplied in the Wave 1/24 Lotus 79 kit I have in the stash. Nick
heloman1
Hi Nick and the rest of you following this superb build thread. I'd like to throw my 2p worth in re clear coat. In the sixties and 70's andeven into the eighties long before the advent of clearcoat ie, 2K on cars. The basecoat was just ordinary car paint ie, celulose laquer same as you got on your bog standard car out of the showroom. The branding wa applied over this paintwork and the vinyl of the time had a slight difference in sheen to the paintwork. So what needs to be born in mind is that no clearcoat was applied over the branding decals. Each branding item(decal) was cut to suit the area it occupied. So take a look at the prototype images of what you are building and go form there. It might not look like an Ef1 car or MotoGP bike of today but then it souldn't... Hope this is of some use to to you all out there? Colin Edited April 18, 2017 by heloman1 typos...
Nick Belbin
Completely understand what you're saying Colin. Trouble is, and I did think about this, was that I wanted to seal the decals in. And I understand the difference in finish but wasn't prepared to risk masking and then pull up any decal or varnish - there is an obvious difference in 'levels' between the base paint and the decals that I'm happy with. I entered the model in our Club competition on Wednesday and it completely failed in a class of six models - four motorbikes and three vehicles. I think I'm going to revisit the 'chrome' fillet on the windscreen rubber surrounds and attempt to tidy them up - if it works it works. keefr22
There's the same problem to be faced if anyone wants to do a Mk 1Mex or RS 2, should decals become available. The stripes on the real ones were officially 'semi matt'. A club friend has printed me some black Mex stripes with a close enough matt finish. But I'm sure if I apply them as they come without a final gloss sealing coat, I'll get horrible silvering , and/or the stripes will fall off after a few months! So they'll end up with an incorrect glossy finsh. Such is life...!! Keith
mbdesignart
Nick have you seen the Liquid Chrome Marker Pens? Link to post in Discussion section. http://www.molotow.com/fileadmin/Dateien/PDF/Produktflyer/Marker/LIQUID_CHROME/ProduktFlyer_LIQUID_CHROME_198x210mm_DE_EN_06-2016_MASTER_screen.pdf Competition judges- no taste! Agree with Keith on the problems of achieving a true to material finish on various elements on a model. This modelling game it's a nightmare. Nick Belbin
Thanks, Mark, for the link - I remember a similar product from about 20 years ago. Do you know a UK stockist? Nick
keefr22
I did a search for UK stockists of them a couple of months back Nick. Found some including; http://www.greatart.co.uk/molotow-liquid-chrome-markers.html https://www.graff-city.com/markers-c79/ink-markers-c140/molotow-liquid-chrome-marker-p955 http://www.thatscrafty.co.uk/molotow-liquid-chrome-pens.html They're also available on Amazon & e-bay, the latter being the only place I could find the refills in stock (they were pricey though!) Keith Keeping all the good stuff to yourself, eh?! Keith. A search today found most stockists either had one size or another. I was wondering if the refill liquid could be put through an airbrush? But then the nib must be removable to refill, doh! Apparently, according to replies in the discussion thread, it does work through an airbrush with comments such as ...far better result than Alclad - You Tube demo is out there. TBH Mark, I saw a video about them, thought 'they look good', searched for them, found them, saved the links....and then completely forgot about them!! Can't remember where the video was posted, but the guy doing it cut one of them up to try airbrushing the stuff....& then also went doh when he thought about the nib!! dstone48
I got mine from spraydaily.com, they still have the 1mm in stock, postage wasn't that bad either for the eu.
Nick Belbin
So did you airbrush? And is that how you did your bumpers which look excellent? Nick

Ordered some from here yesterday, all nib sizes in stock and good price too. Do I have to wear my baseball cap backwards when using these?! Nick, have a look at the You Tube demos even using the 0.4 pen over a large[ish] area they say overlap does not show. Just leave to dry between coats. Still struggling to find his Rally Giants series ones at reasonable prices lol. The problem is there always seems to be conflicting info from book to book and I just get a headache haha. The Mcklein Group B book is wrong with most of the Japanese cars and one Robson book has a few inaccuracies about Quattro's. Ashley I've been keeping an eye out for the Rally Giants MkI Escort book and am delighted to see that it's being reprinted!!! Mine's on its way already I'm told - less than £20 posted. It was good to briefly talk to Richard Griffiths (griffsrw?) at Cosford the other day as well as a few other Britmodellers. I've revisited the chrome inserts in the windscreen rubbers - these are now more uniform and prominent than before so I'm quite happy with the way they have turned out. Boreham
Fantastic work on this Mk1 Nick. So much detail improved on. , Window rubbers, tail lights and front grill aera improvments make a huge difference to the appearance . I was doing a search on 4 link boxes for Mk2 escort and was led to your Mk1 link boxes. Admin, please excuse reviving this older thread, I'm unsure if that's an issue here ,but if it is my apologies in advance.
