Thanks, Kimmo, and sorry for the delayed reply. I'm already sorted on wheels and tyres but this is still good to know - shame it wasn't sooner! Can I ask what brand of tyre you've modelled?

I've been doing some more over the past few days. I've built the wing badges using 1mm x .25mm plasticard strip and boxed the edges using .5 x .25mm strip. They're slightly over scale but do have a bit more presence than just a decal (apologies for another bad photo):

Escort-MkI-Wing-Badge

And continued placing the front lamps and cabling in situ. I've also added brackets front and back for the bumper mountings:

Escort-MkI-All-Lamps-2

On Mark's World Cup car build, I mentioned the following: "I noticed another issue (at least for me) this morning. I'm starting the final assembly of parts and noticed that the geometry of the windscreen wipers didn't ring true. After checking the real thing, it seems that Belkits has positioned the offside wiper incorrectly - they've placed it halfway along the depth of the scuttle whereas it should be further back and tight against the windscreen rubber. Oh lor', dunno whether to attempt to fix it or not but at least you'll have the opportunity to do so before paint if you choose."

I did decide to correct it and it went quite well on the filling, priming and light sanding front and I was feeling quite confident. I did the same masking ritual for the application of the top coat. Unfortunately, I got a slight build up of paint under the windscreen rubber (which was manageable) but worse, a piece of masking tape caught and ripped the rally plate on the bonnet!! Ok, more tape and a bit of polishing got it ready for the spare. I then sprayed on some Klear locally over the decal and 5mm surrounding it but it went a bit blobby and didn't level as I hoped it would. This was now tricky! I attacked the Klear very subtly with some fine Micromesh and have just about salvaged the situation with some polishing - it's not perfect but it'll just have to do.

So all that's left are the rear mudguards and bumpers to attach. I wasn't happy with the first spraying of the bumpers and removal of the paint also removed some of the punched rivet bolt detail. I sanded them off entirely and replaced them with short bits of 20 thou brass rod. I don't quite know what's going on, but I've sprayed these twice since and haven't been happy with the results.

Ho-hum, hopefully I'll get there soon.

That badge looks bl**dy marvelous Nick! I'm sure these 'bad photos' are deliberate because you really do have a 1:1 replica of LVX in the garage & are just kidding us that this work is in 1/24...!!

That front end shot is just  fantastic!

More excellent detailing Nick. Glad to hear you have salvaged the paint issue.

I'm going to try the oven cleaner removal technique on the chrome sprues and recoat with AK Extreme Metal Chrome, something akin to Alclad I gather but new to me. Fortunately I don't have to bother with the bumpers.

Thank you for the kind comments, chaps.

Ashley, I'm not sure that they were pressed aluminium by then so I'm going to assume that they were decals.

Here's a pic after moving the wiper arm location further back with a glimpse of the replacement decal on the bonnet:

I think I can just about get away with it. I did quite a bit of tidying up and thinning of the wiper arms. I still have doubts as to whether I should have done a bit more work using some etch but they don't look too bad in the overall context of the model so am leaving them. I've also added the wheels . . .

Escort-MkI-Front

I might well sand off some of the bottom of the tyres. So all that's really left to add are the mud flaps, bumpers and some bonnet pin fasteners. I'm in two minds about weathering it - I think it needs something . . .

Going by the text at the bottom of the picture. I don't know the language so can't actually read it but it looks like the top tyres are Michelin (Michelinit) and the ones below are Dunlop (Dunloplila)

Firstly, a big thank you to Mark for a replacement decal. Also arrived from Motobitz (Mark's accessory 'sideline') were a set of the Panasport wheels which look really cool.

A brief update - I've been working on removing the bonnet decals and the varnish around it, taking my time as I am scared of going through the paint! I've also decided to give up with Alclad on the bumpers and have resorted to Bare Metal foil - only one is done so far, but I'm a lot happier with it now.

Hi Ashley,

The language is Finnish. And it says, (roughly)

"Tyres, these are the winnig tyres this year "Michelin". On top "ten" Hannu Mikkola and Russell Brooks were the only ones who did not have these magig wheels. It may well be that Dunlop is currently undergoing overtime of new rubber"

Sorry about the typos.

Sorry for the delay in posting recently but these final details always seem to take the most time . . .

Thanks to Mark, I received a replacement rally plate for the bonnet. After some considerable time with 8k micromesh and toothpaste, all the bonnet decals were removed without damaging the paint. Decals were replaced and a couple of coats of Klear brushed on. I brushed it because I didn't want to risk screwing up any other decals when removing the mask or get any build up against the edges of the mask. Some more toothpaste action and polish gave me a finish I'm happy with.

I then moved onto bonnet pin clips. The pin and baseplate had already been installed - the pin was made from 15 amp fusewire. I didn't like to use finer fusewire for the clip because I didn't feel it would hold its shape so used 20thou nickel silver rod. This was bent around a 1mm drill bit then one 'arm' bent and kinked until it wrapped around the pin with a short return. The straight arm was cut where it would enter the pin and the cut off part shortened to represent the part coming out of the other side of the pin. I used Gator's Grip thin and left for 24 hours to dry. Hair was my chosen medium for the retaining cable but actually proved difficult to bend in such a tight curve. So I resorted to stretched sprue that was wrapped around a rod and hot water poured over. From the resulting spiral, I was able to cut some ready curved pieces and glued them in place and added a touch of silver paint:

I'd tried to spray the bumpers with Alclad Chrome which was coated with Klear but this wasn't very successful. A bit of research seemed to indicate that Alclad's Aqua Gloss was the best sealant to use. After a few days, a pot arrived in the post. The bumpers were stripped and prepared again but I failed with this also - I'm obviously doing something wrong so will need to practise and experiment. I really wanted to get the model finished this month so that I could get it finished within a year of starting the kit (yep, it's been that long!!). I resorted to Bare Metal Chrome foil which worked rather splendidly on the front bumpers but not so well on the rear. I made three more attempts on the rear bumper before settling on what you will see - I'm not entirely happy with it - but heyho.

I'm now calling this done.

Hopefully I can get some better pictures next week - I'll then post in RfI.

Many thanks to those of you who followed this build and chipped in with helpful comments and encouragement.

Right then, where's that GT40 I put on hold . . .

Which I have no doubt is probably better than the original! And the chrome also looks better than any that was on my real ones!! (If I didn't take the bumpers off, I sprayed them matt black...!!)

I only have two words for the finished article Nick - absolutely superb!!
