The kits are definitely CMR feel and quality and from the same stable I believe. Both development and production S1s are available, I have both here in front of me now. At £60 each they are not cheap but when was top notch not? TBH once you have purchased a more basic injection kit and bought all the detailing add-ons, you won't be far from this price. With these kits, you do not need anything else, all the add-ons are there already.

Only thing I would quibble about would be the lack of a spare vac canopy which could be included as a courtesy without eating into the profit too much one feels. But maybe this is a bit churlish and looking for a downside.

They didn't - the S2B was a new kit.

They for sure changed/retooled the mould. The S2B wasn´t a new kit...

It would be fun to try testing the old Airfix kit fueslage parts against this kit and se how god they fit...

I tend to agree with flogger. I know it has been a much repeated legend, but I have never seen how the late 80s mould Bucc could have been a "retool". They are very different in almost every way.

Strange, then it seems that Airfix has done a third modell of the S.2B Buccaneer. Jan Forsgreen built one with the upper rear part as an separate peace...

Eh? How odd! I've never come across that before, and I've had a few of these kits.

There have been two issues of the Bucc, the original 1990s kit and the one with additional parts released in 2010 but I don't recall one with a separate rear fuselage

The explanation behind the 're-tool' story has been gievn variously as a marketing error (i.e. someone put re-tool on the publicity sheet at the toyfair), an editorial mistake in a magazine or (more machiavellian) a subterfuge by the Development Dept to get it passed the bean counters.

Whatever the reason, as shown above, it's a completely different kit (albeit with similarities in layout) - I'd be curious to know of the NA39 tool still exists - anyone got access to the Airfix tooling database?

As both kit shared the same assymetrical issues the true history can be that they share the same master.

It´s not impossible that the master for the moulds was retooled and not the mould for the NA.39...

I received my examples of the S.1 and NA.39 kits today. I have to say, they've outdone themselves. These kits are a solid two notches improved over the Mark 2 variants. The panel lines are more crisp and well defined, details are more abundant and better defined such as in the wheel wells and wing folds, the canopy is improved and so forth. I have several Mark 2 kits in various renditions and I would buy more if they were redone to this new standard. They really are that much better. I'm impressed!

I agree! I just received my S.1, and it is a fantastic kit. I'm really drawn to marking scheme A1, the overall white XN394 during carrier deck trials.

Cheers,

Bill
