ZD714 Tornado GR.4 with Storm Shadows and AIM-9s?

Hey,

I'm planning on building a Tornado GR.4 from the latest Revell 1/48 kit depicting ZD714. The empty fuselage pylons kind of bother me so I planned to place some Eduard Storm Shadows down there and also replace the AIM-9s from the box with their Eduard resin counterparts.

The question is: Would these weapons be carried at all by this machine? From the images I've been able to find the Storm Shadows should be OK but I'm not sure about the AIM-9s. If these would be carried are Eduard's AIM-9M/L the correct version?

Also, is there any resin replacement for the GR.4 cockpit? I've been able to find NeOmega's IDS cockpit but this is not the correct one here.... right?

Many thanks in advance!

Aim-9L/M from Eduard are fine and maybe the best ones...

the ones Revell supplies with the kit are a joke, these are kind of Aim-9B from the 1960ies/ 70ies... maybe Germany still used them in the 80ies during the Tornado development.....

I don't think there was a reason in 2008 to carry live ones though... but surely possible!

On peacetime training missions the aircraft would normally carry acquisition rounds, basically the missile bodies without their fins rather than Sidewinder missiles.

Acquisition rounds were not missile bodies without their fins. they were the operational missile guidance head fitted to what can be basically described as a drainpipe fitted with missile hangers.

They were painted light aircraft grey with two 50mm dia roundel pink bands stencilled ACQN in 25mm high black letters on each band.

I have also seen missiles painted Camouflage grey instead of LAG, with the same markings.

The picture in your original post (#1) has one fitted on the port missile rail by the way, you can see the seeker and greeny grey seeker head without canard fins on the launcher!

Thank you!

So the grey parts that can be seen on the image above, behind the fuel tanks are the acquisition rounds? What about the green parts right next to them?

Thanks!

The grey part with the black tip is the missile hanger, the green part is the acquisition round's seeker head - this thread contains some clearer pictures: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/50475-sidewinder-acquisition-rounds/

Selwyn - thank you: I think that's a better description of the round's body !

Hmmm... these don't seem to be included with the kit or at least I'm not able to identify them on the sprues shown here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234993811-tornado-gr4-148/

Are there any aftermarket parts for these? Also, to get back to the cockpit, is there a suitable resin replacement for the Gr.4?

Thanks!

green bit with "White blob" (actually the missile seeker glass) is the missile, the grey bit is the LAU7A missile launcher with black anti erosion paint on the tip.

http://www.tpub.com/aviord321/44.htm scroll down to see the images to see the launcher .

The launchers are in the Revell 1/48 GR4, as are some (rather poor) AIM-9s.

There is no resin GR4 cockpit as far as I am aware, however for the GR4 in the 2008 timeframe the kit's cockpit should be pretty close.
