S5 modeller Posted April 10, 2016 Share Posted April 10, 2016 Hi Matt, it happens to be on the bench near the 1/72 Me 109 I've just finished and with the wings extended, the 2 are almost the same in span and length, so bigger than I expected, but still rather smaller than I'm used to working with. It does have a 'basic' cockpit with decals for the IP's and side consoles, but they were never going to conform over lots of odd angles without some assistance, so I painted black 'panels' in their place. The initial coats of grey has revealed a couple of visible seams and such like, so a little more prep before trying for the white. Craig Better than the 1/144 mig-31 I've got. It has no cockpit what so ever, and just has a blank space. Tinted canopy? The f-14 is starting to look real good, hope you get the gray sorted. specky Posted April 11, 2016 Author Share Posted April 11, 2016 Hi everyone, having completed a little more painting this evening, it occurred to me that I ought to try the decals, which do look a little 'thick' on the sheet - if they turn out to be pants, then there's no point wasting any more time. So after trimming the excess carrier film, the moment of truth.... .....and they are absolutely brilliant! A good soaking in near boiling water has allowed them to suck down onto what remains of the recessed detail and they look superb - I am getting me some more of these kits, that is for sure! specky Posted April 16, 2016 Author Share Posted April 16, 2016 Hi everyone. So, after a bit of a blitz to clear the bench ready for some new GB's, I'm ready to call this one done. Don't be fooled, the colourful decals create something of an optical illusion by drawing the eye from some areas that are a little 'iffy', so please don't look too closely and don't, whatever you do, compare it with photos of the real thing - that does not end well! Despite more than 40 years of dabbling in the hobby, this is my first build in 1/144. I had previously dismissed them as being too small and assumed them to be short of the level of detail and finesse that I expect from my preferred 1/72, but this has blown those preconceptions right out of the water. In every way, the set has exceeded my expectations by a factor of at least 11! For me, the 2 real standouts have been, firstly, the decals. Although they appeared a little 'chunky' on the sheet, they have proven to be remarkably thin but still robust enough to deal with being 'nudged' about and after some pressure from a face cloth soaked in near boiling water have settled almost flawlessly - outstanding! But the real, top of the tree, head and shoulders above everything else, high point has been the paint. Proof that being 'budget' doesn't automatically mean it has to be rubbish. It really does beg the question 'how have Humbrol managed to get their acrylics so wrong for so long?'. If the sequence had been reversed and I had built this first, I wouldn't have bothered with the Airfix kits, knowing how 'troublesome' the paint can be. This isn't perfect, plenty of errors and mistakes have been made, but cunning photography hides a multitude of sins and in case you were wondering, the metallic shine on the jet pipes is powdered pencil lead rubbed over black paint with a finger tip! So that's me done, 3 builds in 5 weeks is a new personal record and I've enjoyed every second and very unexpectedly, I've learnt a few things along the way - win-win!
