Badder
Perfection is an evil mistress fella You said it Dads! Hello,Badder - When I read the headline that your "Rhino is dead, smashed" I panicked thinking that a Phantom had gone to Heaven. That aside,I'm very sorry that you've encountered these paint issues with your AFV build. The quality of your build and finishing work proves that such a problem can happen to the best of us. All the best,Paul. Sorry to have panicked you. I didn't realise that a rhino was also a phantom! Anyway, as I have explained, I may have ruined a good kit, but what I DID do was satisfactory in each stage bar the final one! I had had issues with the acrylic gloss varnish before on other builds and ultimately I've learned that it just isn't good enough to withstand my technique for heavy weathering: i.e. lots of rubbing back of overcoats using a brush loaded with water or thinners. I have now purchased 'proper' chipping fluid, and hopefully this will solve the problem. I definitely have to find another brand of varnish in the meantime! Badder
I have immediately begun a fresh build, a German heavy armoured car Sd.Kfz 234/1... the eight wheeled 2cm gun jobby. This was used in Normandy, but also on the Eastern front, so I'm thinking that the remains of the Nashorn might come in handy sooner than I thought. So, that's it for this thread UNTIL I buy a replacement Nashorn, at which point this thread will be resurrected! Thanks all for looking and for the positive and fun comments. If anyone DOES have any tips as per what equate to GOOD INDESTRUCTABLE VARNISHES, please let me know? Cheers, Badder Edited June 30, 2016 by Badder

Badder
Can I have your crew figures ! .. might as well be a bit cheeky Hi Dads. I haven't even touched the figures yet. They are really good and their poses may be suitable for other scenes. I have the armoured car and a Tiger that might benefit from their use, so sorry, I will say no on this occasion. Cheeky bleeder! Sgt.Squarehead
IMHO sometimes it is better to kill a build than to carry on with something that will increasingly irritate you every single time you look at it.....I've killed a couple recently and found it thoroughly therapeutic on each occasion.

Indeed Sarge. Having rescued it once, with all that careful stripping back and repainting, I just couldn't face doing it again. I wouldn't call smashing it therapeutic in any shape or form, but it has saved me a lot of time and effort. It was already 'spoiled' in my opinion, no matter how well I might have finished it. Like you say, it was just becoming a massive irritation. I AM looking forward to doing another though. I may go for the 2 full PE sets... total cost, including the model, something approaching 100 quid! I certainly hope I don't spoil that one! It won't be for some time though, maybe towards the end of the year. Badder.
Tzulscha
Well darn. I thought it was looking pretty good too. Especially after the first strip. I kinda liked the flaky paint and all. Ah well, I can sympathize, I have the remains of a Hummel in the parts bin that suffered a similar fate some years back. Most of it has resurfaced in bits and bobs on other builds. Write it off as a learning experience. The next one will be a cracker, I have no doubt!
Yeoman1942
Sorry to hear the bad news Badder. Varnish wise I have always found Vallejjo works well. Add a few drops of W&N flow improver and it sprays a treat. Not sure if it will stand up to stripping and bicarbonate.
