THE RHINO IS DEAD, SMASHED TO PIECES.

Not much work this weekend cos of the local rock festival and copious beer. However, I have repainted the ammunition (gold leaf is still a pain) and the rollers for the tracks.

More progress and pics tomorrow.

3 colour cammo scheme applied, again with enamels. As before, I sprayed freehand; not to concerned about neatness as the whitewash will cover nearly all of it. A coat of acrylic gloss varnish will be applied next.

Paid a flying visit to my local model shop, on the off-chance that they had some decals for sale suitable for replacing those I used up earlier... and hey presto, a whole bag full of German Knight's Crosses of varying sizes, but all for Luftwaffe aircraft.. However a few on each sheet were of the correct size for the Nashorn. I had to get 2 sheets at 4.99 each, but the owner let me have 2 for 1. Hopefully they will be of good quality. Meanwhile I think I can airbrush the shield markings and bodge up a 'snow tiger' motif and a scrawled name, freehand. So, let work recommence!

I have added the 'Knight's Crosses' since.

As I said, the cammo scheme is very rough and will just provide colour variation where the whitewash has been weathered away.

Having replaced the 'Knight's Crosses' with new ones from a Luftwaffe set, I was considering what to do about the other vehicle markings. There was no way I could manage to hand paint the 'Pommern' logo so I thought about using the kit's other decals, i.e. the Heart. However, this applied to a vehicle used in Italy so it would not be accurate. Besides, a heart seems a blooming stupid thing to paint on the side of a SPG. A broken heart might have been more apt. Instead, I plumped for using one of the other decals from the Luftwaffe set: that being a yellow shield emblazoned with an arm and hammer. Now someone might complain that this is a flagrant disregard for accuracy also, but hey, who's to say someone didn't hand paint one on the side of a Nashorn on the Eastern Front?

If I were capable of painting very small and accurate lettering, I'd have added the name 'Hammershlag' (Hammerblow) above or below the shield, but I'm not, so I didn't.

What I did do is hand paint the 'Snow tiger' motif (Or is it a Snow Leopard?)' It's not brilliant, but then neither was the original design. It'll do. The one at the rear will be hidden by a door anyway, and the one at the front is going to be dirtied up and not clearly visible anyway.

The Nashorn has now received another coat of acrylic gloss varnish in readiness for the whitewashing. Oh and I also gave the gun mount, breach and controls a wash with a dark blue filter (Heavily thinned oil paints 'borrowed' from my wife) It was a bit of an experiment, but I figured blue would make the thing look more like very cold metal. And it has, I think.

BTW the messy areas on the inside of the side panels will be hidden behind the ammo racks which I have removed in order to repaint and fix the rounds. Also, the gun mantle is not fixed to the gun and the two are only dry fitted.

Pics shortly.

Rapid progress today. I sealed off the fighting compartment using polythene sheet and blu-tack and used Maskol to cover the decals/markings and some areas of cammo, then oversprayed with white. Once the white was touch-dry I removed the Maskol and blended in the edges of the masked areas with a brush dampened with thinners. Once touch dry I scratched in the words 'Hammershlag' (Hammerblow) into the side panels. I then dusted parts of the hull and glacis heavily with dark earth weathering powder and a not so heavy dusting on the side panels, here concentrating on vertical brushstrokes. I also pin washed around the rivets and details using the same weathering powder and a very dilute black. The whole vehicle then received another coat of gloss varnish.

Meanwhile, I resprayed the gun barrel, masking off the breach-end of the gun with Blu-tack again. Then mantlet was sprayed separately.

So, I'm more-or-less back to where I was before the disaster occurred!

That was really an amazing resurrection Job Badder, fun to see the Rhino brought back from teetering on the edge of the bin to become a healthy if somewhat chilly Nashorn.

Great job,

Thanks Gremlin.

Yeah, it's a bit of a dirty beast (Not something I usually attempt) and something of an exercise. I've learned a lot, including the fact that painting things white isn't easy unless you want to represent something freshly painted!

I've just finished weathering the gun barrel and mantlet and I'm quite happy with them. The gun barrel, being, high up and above the hull, isn't quite as dirty as the rest of the vehicle. I have yet to start on the fighting compartment. I will probably leave that until last and do the wheels and tracks next. BTW, I will probably do the snow thing again, if only to brighten the whole thing up.

Whatever happens, I shall be getting another one of these kits. I like it a lot. I may go for the full PE upgrade which costs more than the model itself!

Nice weathering, I found a panzer IV at Salisbury model show so no Nashorn or Hummel for my platforwagon.

Thanks Ozzy.

I popped into a shop to buy some enamel thinners.. and thought about buying a Sturmtiger, a Jagdpanther a Matilda, and an SAS Jeep.... luckily I am very brave and managed not to.

Hi Badder. Well, for saying how many trials and tribulations your build has gone through, it has resulted in a superb looking model. The weathering looks top notch! Very well done.

Kind regards,

Stix

Thanks Stix,

I guess I'm too close to the subject to know what it looks like! I think it's okay, but probably not as good as I could do. Having to start again took the shine off it.... forgive the pun!.

Looks stunning on those stones Badder, nice work...

Thanks Vince... The stones were made from plaster of Paris poured into latex moulds which I made around real stones.

Nice weathering Badder, the streaking looks very effective. Well done on resisting buying more kits

Cheers Yeoman.

I've been working on the wheels and tracks today. Pics tomorrow.
