PlasticSoldier
I just wondered why the Bedford QL has 2 different RAF number plates (1 above the wheel and 1 on the back door and cab door) and the AEC only has 1 type (on the front and back)
Graham Boak
I don't know for sure, but possibly because the AEC is wartime and the QL postwar? Wartime (later wartime, anyway) would commonly have the Type Number on the doors.
Selwyn
I just wondered why the Bedford QL has 2 different RAF number plates (1 above the wheel and 1 on the back door and cab door) and the AEC only has 1 type (on the front and back) To be absolutely accurate it hasn't got number plates they are census numbers! I think postwar they standardised on the front/back presentation, and the old position numbers (cab side) were just left on. These numbers were superceded with the current Military number plate system presented NN/ LL/ NN early postwar, so the postwar Blue/yellow colour scheme with census numbers gives a narrow time period in existance of just a couple of years. Graham Boak
The census numbers (or marks) were normally on the side of the bonnet, so on cab-over-engine types such as these two it's a moot point where they should be. The AECs carried them on the front and not the doors.
