A Brace of IXs - Airfix and Italeri 1/72 ++ Finished ++

Recommended Posts

I've had that silk problem with W&N matt, but I've always attributed it to having failed to mix the varnish properly.

Very nice work, Ced, you're tempting me to acquire some Lifecolors. Have a good weekend!

They're looking great Ced!

I had a problem with W&N drying a bit cloudy in places. It was polished out with fine sandpaper (like 2000 or so) and it the cloudiness disappeared and it didn't harm the underlying coat.

Thanks Cookie - that worked for me too! Thanks for the tip (see below) :)

Thanks Chris, I think you're right (of course). I recommend the Lifecolor - non-smelly, great coverage straight out of the pot and the colours look right... why wouldn't you? :)

Up early this morning so had a bit of time to Micromesh the glossy bits and spray the effected areas with another coat of thinned varnish. Good enough for me! Treated myself by ripping off the masking and fitting the props:

I just need to fit the rear view mirrors and the bottom and spine lights. And the nav lights. I'm going to try the Kristal Klear for those and don't want to rush it so it'll have to wait until I'm back from Cornwall.

I was hoping that I was wrong, but I moved on to Vallejo varnish anyway as I find it easier to brush. I just bought a load of Vallejo and Ammo/MIG paints, so I'm loath to add another range (but as I'm on a self-imposed model buying embargo, it could be a good deflection so that I can continue to "invest" in my hobby).

Both are looking good, guess we'll see them in the gallery very soon

Thanks Giorgio - all done so they'll be there soon :)

Looking good Ced and I'm not just saying that because I'm biased towards a 602 squadron machine.

Thanks Col :)

they look superb ced :) like the look of those lifecolour paints, certianly do look a good match for the DFS, unlike their own special labeled raf dark green.....

Cheers Stu, I'm a convert!

Looking great

Thanks Alex :)

Good afternoon Ced

Very good job you have done so far :goodjob:

Patrice

Thanks Patrice, very kind :)

Chris

Thanks Chris :) I'd been using Vallejo matt varnish from two sets I had and I do like it, but I also like the W&N which gives a much matter finish (which some don't like)

Those look very nice indeed.

Must get a set of Lifecolor RAF paints.

Trevor

Thanks Trevor :) I'll certainly be looking to Lifecolor as my paint stash goes down.

Last little bits now! Look forward to the finished article when you are back. Nice save on he varnish as well.

Have a fun weekend away!

Rob

Thanks Rob :)

Sharp paint jobs! :thumbsup2:

Thanks FL :)

So, back from our trip and got the final bits done one these. VERY carefully cut the rear view mirror from the sprue for the Italeri, VERY carefully sanded it, carefully drilled a small hole in the canopy, applied some glue and positioned the mirror. The hole's too small. Removed the mirror and drilled a larger hole. Picked up the mirror with tweezers and ping! Searched fruitlessly for the mirror and decided to do what Mr Heath would do and cut one from a plastic box with a punch:

There it is, near the end of the cocktail stick. It's a bit bigger than the provided part but looks OK fitted (if you squint). Also fitted the spine light.

The Airfix got the other mirror and a spine light from Kristal Klear:

I've also blobbed the blue lights on the bottom and put some clear on the nav lights. They'll be in the gallery when all that's dried and I've taken some suitable shots.

Done! Thanks everyone for your help and support as always. Time to start a post on the PR XI.

"Yum :)", says the Carpet Monster, licking its chops. "Nothing I lke better than tiny pieces of clear plastic - my favourite!"

It may be that the CM did you a favour, Ced - another step in your apprenticeship to Mr Heath :D.

Both looking great: a credit to you, sir.

Cheers,

Alex (off to see the IX now)

Very nice job on the Spitfires! I do notice that the distortion from the canopy on that closeup photograph of the Airfix model cockpit area makes the pilot look a little like the figure from Edvard Munch's 'The Scream' painting.

Jason

Thanks Alex, very kind :) A small step I feel... I'm sure Nigel would have fashioned something from brass rod and, er, shiny stuff and it would have been the right size, with handles. I am not worthy...

Excellent double Ced!

Thanks Cookie! As usual both kits look like Spitfires to me - it's a good job my knowledge of historical aircraft matches my modelling skills so that I can finish the builds, stick 'em on the ceiling and move on. :)

Thanks Jason - sadly I think the distortion may partly be due to the Airfix molding...

You've given me an idea though... Having spent some of the weekend in 'Art Galleries' (our friends have just finished renovating their house and have a couple of blank walls) if someone believes they can sell a block of wood with a rope ring in it for £800 perhaps I should approach Tate Modern? :)

Well done Ced, two nice looking IXs !

Noticed as you're another happy user of a leather punch tool, these are cheap but very useful, I use them for plasticard, decal sheet, masks. And once in a while even to punch a new hole in some belt..

Great work as always Ced, looking forward to the next. Something in 1/48 perhaps?

John

Thanks John :) You are a kind and loyal online friend, and very persistent. Suffice it to say your suggestion(s) is always in my mind. I've even thought about using up my Airfix club voucher for the 'specialist Spitfires' but I fear they may be rubbish kits and put me off. I also have a problem with shelf space with (currently) only one shelf in my 'display cabinet'... and the 1/24 keep tempting me. I think I'll wait until the reading glasses are as thick as my magnifiers. Maybe. Next build started... oh, you're already there!

Very nice pics in the gallery Ced, and especially good work on the Italeri. Though I must say between the two the Airfix looks better :)

Cheers

Jimmy

Thanks Jimmy - you're right, the Airfix is a nicer kit all round. It's put me off the planned 'dual build' of an Airfix PR XIX with my MPM PR XI. When doing this pair the Italeri always got 'second best' so I'm going to do one at a time now, especially where the kits are so different. :)

Thanks Giorgio :) I use the punch for my daughter's belts too - dieting! Sadly the holes in my belts go the wrong way...

Hi Ced,

I was wondering what you've been up to and finally found this thread. As usual, only after you've completed both aircraft. They both look great and the paint finish looks very good. You managed to overcome all the fit problems along the way as well. :goodjob:

Regarding your problems with W&N matt varnish, I also had some problems with it, namely white spots spread over the covered surfaces, which spoilt the finish. So, I just quit using it. I'm now using Alclad Flat Kote, with which I managed to get good results (needs to be really well shaken before application).

Cheers

Jaime
