Airfix Mk1a-IIa conversion. 1/72

Recommended Posts

Chaps.

Here we go then.

This is the good old (new moulding) Airfix MkIa from the gift set:

As can be seen, I have the rather fine 3Dkits mkIa conversion set to use.

I'm not too sure of which markings to use yet. I have a pretty large collection of decals to choose from.

I'm sure something will come to mind that maybe a little different.

The paints will be a mix of Tamiya, Vallejo and Xtracrylix.

Glue will be a mix of Tamiya "Extra thin" and Humbrol liquid poly.

Here we go with the start tonight.

First up, the wings:

Slap a bit of paint/wash around:

A fair start to a very nice, blame free kit.

A good start and a nice cockpit !

These kits are popular in this STGB, and rightly so. Pity that the fit is not always too good, the flat wings problem is something I found before on one of my builds of this kit.

Your cockpit shot shows one small detail that Airfix got right and many others forgot (and many modellers forget too..): the structure under the fixed part of the rear canopy ! It's there in all high back Spitfires and yet is very often forgotten

And this does now have the oxygen bottles!

Cracking little kit, but his one isn't as crisp as my previous builds.

There's quite a bit of flash and soft detail in places.

still, better than most other offerings.

I'll get the wings on properly tomorrow after dealing with the seems.

Excellent start Rick. I'm a fan of these Airfix kits too, and am looking forward to the conversion. I don't know how 3D-Kits do it, they're parts are so crisp, not 'short run' at all.

Very crisp!

Makes the kit parts look very poor.

Mind you. in 1/72nd?

I won't be able to see it!

Right, seams checked and canopy masked.

Better get some primer on then!

Been really busy sorting Juliet's "Studio", so not as much progress as I'd like, but needs must.

Primer on:

That'll be a MKIIa then!

I used the new Badger "unpronounceable" primer (cheers Fingers  for the sample).

It certainly seems to stick like muck to a blanket. I did have to thin it with W&N Flow Improver though, it's a little thick.

It cleaned out of the Iwata fairly well, but I agree with Fingers, I had to use Cellulose to really shift it. The AB was spluttering after the first clean with various acrylic cleaners.

Hopefully more over the weekend.

Bunged on some Duck Egg.

Used Vallejo MA with a little white.

I needed to polish up the primer a little first, it went one fairly rough.

Vallejo MA goes on beautifully, lovely soft sheen ready for decals without a gloss coat.

The aircraft colour looks better in the flesh!

I did. This morning.........

Just gave it a quick blast of sky, which flung a bit of fluff onto the fuselage, smoothed it off causing more damage.

Guess the Sky will be coming out again tomorrow!

Did the same with my Ocean Grey yesterday. Went to move what I though was dust and pulled the paint on one wing.

Micro meshed and repainted today. What are we like?

Slap on a bit of camo:

Vallejo MA Dark Earth. I usually lighten this a little, but didn't bother this time.

Just to see how it goes.

Been a tad busy with sorting my wife's studio.

Normal service soon. I hope.

Glad to see some paint on this one. Regarding the damage I guess that with acrylics we have to keep the risk of damage in mind, they are great paints but also a bit fragile. Personally I sometimes think of going back to stronger enamels but the advantages in terms of quick drying and no smell are simply too great nowadays for me
