DAG058 Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 My entry for this GB is the Airfix 1/72 Chinook. I am going mostly fir an OOB build. I want a fairly quick and simple build. As you can see I have got some AM decals, just need to decide upon which ones I will use. 6
Nigel Heath Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Looking forward to seeing this come together. 1
CliffB Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 That decal sheet looks very nice. Of the three schemes on the cover, the UN one catches my eye - but I haven't seen the other six yet! Cliff 1
DAG058 Posted March 20, 2016 Author Posted March 20, 2016 Made a start on this one today. The kit looked like it should go together fairly well. It's not a crisply detailed as modern kits and it has some ejector pin marks which I had to get rid of. The interior isn't hugely detailed. There is no sound proofing or seating. I beriefly considered adding these but it decided against it. Not much will be on show and it'll take up too much of my limited modelling time. 6
Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Nice start, I wonder how this kit compares with the other CH-47 kits out there? Looks like a nice straight forward build so far. 1
Nigel Heath Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Tidy looking build so far and the weathering on the floor looks great. 1

I'm not sure about that I'm afraid. It's pretty similar to most airfix kits of it's era, some deep panel lines and parts that generally go together well but still needs a bit of filler and fettling. Tidy looking build so far and the weathering on the floor looks great. Cheers Nigel, appreciated! 1
Jabba Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Nice start. The Airfix is actually the Italeri kit that they borrowed under their own name. Have you decided on which scheme you are going to do the model in? Have a funny story with the first flight of the white ones. 2
moaning dolphin Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 A nice choice, I did the Italeri version of this and it looks pretty nice, although I had it stowed for a number of years before building it and the decals were trashed and persevered with them and a mix of old matchbox ones, didn't think to ask Airfix for some! Good work so far! Bob 1

Have you decided on which scheme you are going to do the model in? Have a funny story with the first flight of the white ones. I'm still not sure. The white UN scheme is different but I think it'll be hard to do the weathering etc to a good standard. I quite fancied Gulf War pink to go with a few builds that I did last year. However I think the desert mods such as the sand filters would be obvious mistakes. 1
Nigel Heath Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 However I think the desert mods such as the sand filters would be obvious mistakes. Could they not be scratch built? They don't look too difficult. I also see that resin aftermarket may be available. 1

Oh you found the picture showing the best side of me. I did make the masters for these, but I was working at Odiham at the time so I could work with the real thing and I have now also got rid of the drawings that I made. For a basic filter you just use some plastic tube and cover one end off, then make a smaller tube for the fan underneath if you like. That is what I did with my very first version many years ago. 3
wimbledon99 Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 After my failed H-13H, this is the only other heli I have in my small stash. I was going to enter it in this build but after checking for other Chinooks and finding the exact same kit, I feel it would be a bit rude. Hence, I'm gong to enjoy your build and steal some tips for mine a little later in the year It will be a birthday present for my nephew when complete. She's looking great so far! 1
DAG058 Posted April 23, 2016 Author Posted April 23, 2016 I'm still plodding away with this one. I managed to add a few parts today, now that my Made in GB build is done. Has a fit few issues and the canopy is spider webbed. I don't think it'll be a great build but I'm really enjoying it and that's what the hobby is all about.
heloman1 Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Just found you build thread, not the best Chinook kit around but I'm sure you'll turn it into someing pleasing. Colin 1
CliffB Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Looking good, with nothing nasty having been revealed by the primer Cliff
Rodders154 Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Looking good it isn't the best kit but you are doing a cracking job Rodders 1
DAG058 Posted May 19, 2016 Author Posted May 19, 2016 Looking good it isn't the best kit but you are doing a cracking job Rodders Thanks Rodders. I got the wheels painted today. Next up is the varnish. 1
DAG058 Posted May 29, 2016 Author Posted May 29, 2016 (edited) I've made good progress with this one, the decals are on, it's weathered and varnished. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to add the finishing touches. Not much point in photos now as it's very nearly complete. Edited May 29, 2016 by DAG058 1
DAG058 Posted May 30, 2016 Author Posted May 30, 2016 My photos are now up in the gallery and an RFI can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235003310-airfix-172-chinook-ifor-double-exposure/ Thank you to all who have followed and commented along the way! 1
Jabba Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Nice one. The helicopter coming back from Split with the nose art markings came as a bit of a surprise at RAF Odiham. Unfortunately they did not last that long. IIRC another 3 Chinooks had nose art in Split. 1
