Things are progressing nicely. Thanks for the update. Bob H.

To get around silvering I float the decals onto "Klear" rather than anything else then treat as normal..

It's been a while since my last update. The truth is that I lost my lever arch binder in which I keep all my spare & aftermarket decals.

In order to find this folder, I decided to tidy up my stash which was a mess. Apparently I have 3 1/48 Buccaneers and I don't remember buying a single one!

It's still 2 kits deep but that's all the wallspace I have available here. I sorted by ships, aircraft then vehicles and within aircraft, by nationality. Duplicates go to the rear where applicable. I still can't see everything, but I at least know roughly where it should be.

More importantly for this thread, I sneaked out of bed this morning and applied the 2 missing swastikas to the Stuka while everyone else was asleep!

You call that 'a stash'? I'd send you a series of photos of my stash but I don't have access to a satellite. I note a serious lack of Phantoms and Bf109s in that small collection. No Meng Kids kits either, I can sort that for you.

Dunno what your problem is!

Nobody does but the experts think it's an inability to resist buying while not being able to build quickly enough. (or were you meaning in general?)

Next order is in already!

On a Sunday too - sheesh you must be bored ;)

I realised I dodged all the fiddly bits on the Stuka. I started addressing that by masking the spinner for its red stripe. I painted it off-white first of all, since red is rarely a strong covering colour

Yes Sir !! We're definitely on target. Thanks for posting. Bob H.

Oh I get it now! I wondered what that blob in front was (chewing gum?) but it's the masked up spinner, doh!

I've been lacking in enthusiasm the past week. I'm not enjoying the day job a huge amount and it's taking a toll.

Still, this afternoon I finished the stencils, and have just given it a coat of enamel matt clear and demasked the glazings.

I've now got to do the fiddly bits including finding or making replacement aileron mass balances. I removed them all and can't find them now.

Looking very nice Jamie - good job with the transfers (?) on the airbrakes :)

The colours look really nice Jamie and the red spinner stripe seems to have worked a treat.

I hope the missing mass balances turn up (experience suggests they will, but only when you have painstakingly carved four new ones out of stretched sprue).

Sorry to hear the job has been a bit pony; I went back to work after a short holiday on Thursday and by Friday was already contemplating a killing spree (I'd insert the machine-gunning smiley here to show that I'm not entirely serious, but a] I'm using the iPad and can't do smileys with it and b] I am entirely serious)

Anyway you're nearly there mate, press on...

Cheers,

Stew

Thanks!

Credit for the airbrakes goes to Revell in this case. The crosses and stencils came from the kit's own sheet. I often have trouble with Revell decals/transfers/stickers! finding them prone to silvering and often quite stiff. My Catalina was a bit of a nightmare as on top of all that they broke up every time too. Here though the crosses went on underneath well. A few strategic stabs with a fresh scalpel blade settled them down around the sticky-outy bits. The segments for the dive brakes laid pretty flat but were easy to position. I just kept dousing them with Microsol until they capitulated!

Thanks Stew :)

I'll have a proper look for them today. They must be somewhere. Unfortunately somewhere may include landfill. Oh, and step away from the weapons! ;)

Jamie the Stuka is looking very menacing now, IIRC you won't be at the next meeting in (almost) 2 weeks time? We'll have to wait until the next one to see it then.

Last week I got another phone-call about a potential 'Day job' starting on Monday but never heard anything back but I'm not fussed about it. The one advantage to being 'between jobs' is that I don't have to suffer office politics at the moment. I took advice from cartoon penguins on how to deal with office buffoons, "just smile and wave boys, smile and wave"!

The impending success of BlackMike Models possibly means you haven't got time for all this day-job nonsense anyway? :) Day jobs are not what life is all about! Well it is, but it shouldn't be!

Looks very smart.

Thank you kindly Sir :)

Today we went to some grown-up shops. All very dull. This morning I located 3 of the mass balances in the bottom of the box, and concluded after a brief (measured in seconds) glance around that the fourth was a gonner so made a new from sprue heat stretched sprue which was then reheated and bent, before having a balance mass fashioned from thick CA. I glued most of the fiddly bits on, but decided that I couldn't live with the pitot tube so fashioned a new one from tubes.

Its distinguishing features over the plastic one that would have saved me 8 minutes of my life are a hole in the end for the wind to blow into, and that one half lines up with the other.

A question for Luftwaffe 1/48 scale model making experts:

The kit's rear facing machine gun is rubbish. Who makes the best aftermarket MG15s? The entire moulding is quite unconvincing, so I'm looking for a complete replacement rather than just brass barrels.

Posted

I think we're just about there on this one. I'm going to raid the stock room for some Infini rigging line to finish it off, but I'll do that after the MG15 arrives from Duncan. The inside of the glazings have some milky paw-prints which need cleaned up, and I will perhaps wash the underside in medium grey as the panel lines reflect some light which looks a little odd. I don't want to black them up, but equally I think they need something.

That's turned out really nice Jamie B)

Have you thought about whether to use the black or the white Infini thread? I've got some in black but have lately been wondering if white would be better (at least in 1/72, might not be the same answer for 1/48)...

Cheers,

Stew

Funny you mention that Stew. I was thinking about that myself. I was converging towards using the very thin white and colouring it grey once glued in place. Partly because I think black is a bit stark, and partly because I won't miss it so much from the stock room - we sell about 4 times as many blacks as whites ...
