If anyone wants the photos and the full build write up for this please contact me via PM thanks!

Hey all! My next build is gonna be a quickie! Its part of a group build on another forum and it was already started a few weeks ago so there will be one big update then progress as we go along.

Unlike my other builds this one is gonna be as OOB as possible! It will give me a much appreciated little breather from doing super detail work.

The colours I have chosen after much deliberation is Lamoborghini Arancio Atlas (light pearl orange) and Gunmetal Grey. This will be my first time painting with Gravity Colors so I will give a quick run down of my thoughts and how I painted with the Gravity Paints.

Anyways on with the updates (Cut and Paste from the other forum)

So I decided on the Lamborghini Miura, its going to be a simple oob build and will be running along side my NSR500 build which is nearing completion, so updates may be a little slow to begin with while I finish that one off.

I'm still looking for inspiration for the colour combo as I would like it to be somewhat special considering the fact I'll be building this oob, at the moment gold/bronze rims and lower stripe with creme/pearl white for the rest of the body are the favourites but anyone reading this by all means can give me some suggestions as well icon_razz.gif

Here are the sprue shots, I have begun sanding and doing the panel lines on the bodyshell, otherwise the kit is completely untouched! I have also noticed a little scratch on the clear windscreen icon_sad.gif Hoping it will polish out so fingers crossed on that one!

DSC05304.jpg

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I sanded the body and scribed the panel lines, once scribed then I used some panel line accent colour in black to fill the lines.

IMG_9724.jpg

I also stripped all the nasty chrome on one of the sprues!

IMG_9725.jpg

Next up will be primer and then deciding on my colour combo, the colours are still on their way over from America so hopefully not much longer a wait left

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I've done a little testing with colours:

IMG_9743.jpg

So on the right hand side we have Scale Finishes Lamborghini Arancio Argos, which is a reddish/orange pearlescent colour

In the middle is Zero Paints Nissan Gun Metal which is a real flakey dark grey colour

On the left hand side is Zero Paints Lamoborghini Verde Ithaca, which (depending on primer colour) is a light green pearlescent colour

On all of them I used 3 different coloured primers Black, Grey and White. I like the way the bright colours came out with white primer but the Gunmetal really looks the business with the black primer!

I will use the Gunmetal or something similar for the lower section of the two tone, my concern is that it might be too metallic and will look out of place. I am in fact really keen to have a dark grey/silver colour without metallic on the lower section and rims.

As for the rest of the body I'm after something that pops, both green and orange look good but at this point I am favouring the orange as the depth in that colour is awesome. I am also waiting on a few colours to arrive from Gravity paints in America. One of the Gravity colours I have ordered is the Lamborghini Arancio Atlas which is a brighter pearl orange which might pop better than the Arancio Argos.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok I've finally decided on my colour combo!

IMG_9800.jpg

Not a great pic but the orange has a nice pearl effect in it and also in that picture the orange hasnt been clear coated so I should see more depth in the colour once cleared!

I've also finished the cabin. I went for a sandy leather colour, to get a little more effect out of it I rubbed the parts with my fingers to create darker shiny surfaces to try and mimic leather. Some parts were flocked and I also added seatbelts. I didnt go to crazy with detailing, in fact the one real additions were the seatbelts. I could have added lot more but this is as close to an OOB build as possible!

Hasegawa have done a great job of including chrome transfers for many of the interior parts which really adds to the realism.

Next I will start priming and painting the body and also make a start on the engine!

Thanks for watching C&C welcome

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I am doing the finishing touches on the bodyshell.

The intake fins near the door uprights were extra annoying, on my kit the top quarter was snapped so I had to glue it back together. They were also very fiddly to fill and sand, the lower part of the fins blends into the bodyshell and it was pretty tough to get a good sanding action going on that part. The other bolt on to the body shell is the lower intakes, I painted underneath where they glued black so that later on when you look into the intake you dont see the red plastic.

IMG_9805.jpg

There is a real slight red tinge to the whole bodyshell, not sure if its my eyes or if the red is bleeding through. My next decision to make is whether or not to put a coat of white primer on top of the grey primer thats already on, this will allow the orange to pop more but I'm just getting concerned with the paint thickness too. If I stick with the grey then the orange will be deeper and darker which might not look good.

I think a little test with some spoons and different primers is required! Stay tuned for another update very soon!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The result:

IMG_9806.jpg

I think I should stick with the white primer!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I managed to get the white primer on and then masking done for the lower section which will be painted the metallic grey

Now ready for the orange colour coat:

Oooooo nice. I almost brought this kit at the weekend at a car show. I have the Jota version to do so will be following with interest.

Ashley

Funny thing is I did the same thing! I saw this kit at a model show and decided against getting it. One year later at the same show the same dude was selling this kit so I thought it must be destiny lol

Cracking start!

I will be watching this one!

My all time favorite car, beautiful lines, I also have this in my stash to build and a nice 1/16th version too!!

Matt

Thanks Matt, glad you will stick around for the build :) Who manufactures the 1/16th version?

Nice and simple Imster.

Looking good so far mate.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Simon.

Thanks Simon, I aim to keep it as simple as possible! This build is the equivalent to a smoke break during work :)

Cool build. Would have gone with the green but sure it will look awesome in any colour

I was really tempted by the green and tbh I actually preferred it but after scouring the internet for reference pics I saw that green had been done so many times that it put me off doing "another green Miura"

That was a great demo of the difference primer colour can make!

Neat work so far, that interior is very nice!

Looking forward to seeing it with that stunning orange on!

Keith

Thanks Keith, yeah because lacquers are pretty much transparent paint (even more so with the orange I used) your choice of primer is very important.

Cracker start! I wish my Gravity paints would hurry up and arrive grrr!

Lol I know they take ages right? I take it you're in Australia? I spoke to the guy who runs things in USA and he was saying quite a few Aussies were getting worried about paint not arriving. I myself have ordered from him 3-4 times and every time I expect the delivery to come it usually takes about 2 weeks longer than that.

The only advice I can lend is that the paint will arrive just it will take a lot longer than usual. The owner was saying he is going to change the writing on the bottles to say that the contents are unrestricted for air shipping so hopefully that might speed things up for all of us down under

Oh, yes, beautiful car, my second favourite of all time (beaten only by the inspiration for it!!).

Nick

Edit: Otaki or Bandai did the 1/16, but it might be the one now done by Fujimi . . .

Hi imster,

'Thanks Matt, glad you will stick around for the build :) Who manufactures the 1/16th version?'

The 1/16th Version I managed to get hold of is a rare Fujimi one.

It looks pretty basic, but everything opens!! so should be fun! :)

Great choice of colour too, I was torn between the yellow and the green and im going for the green on mine!

Looking forward to next update.

Cheers

The inspiration was the Ford GT40? If so I love the GT40's lines and I can see where the inspiration comes from! I've actually got the newer shape GT40's that were raced in Lemans and I am on the hunt for a Trumpeter 1/12 scale GT40 too

The green will look awesome for sure, maybe you should try the one I tried which is the Lambo Verde Ithaca, its a pretty nice looking light green with a pearlescent finish

Very nice imster, ironically I had a similar situation choosing a colour for a lambo aventador roadster recently and I went for a kawasaki colour.

Shaun

Thanks Shaun, Well with lambos you cant really go wrong as long as you choose something that is bright lol :)

Using Gravity Colors for the first time:

Not sure if many know but there is a newish manufacturer for model paints and they look like an ambitious company. Since I have come across them they have released loads of new colours and colour sets for different racing car liveries and automotive manufacturers, they have also started stocking Plamoz wheels which are a must buy if you want to build the Revell Porsche 918 or the Revell BMW i8 (as you know Revell are terrible at making authentic looking wheels). I believe they manufacture their paints in Europe (possibly Spain) and from first impressions I am extremely impressed!

The main reason I am so impressed is because the paints with metallic and pearl in them seem to be more to scale, meaning that the paint particles are scaled down. Anyone who has tried to paint a metallic paint designed for a full size car would have noticed how chunky the metallic flakes are and as a result the paint job looks overscale. This is the beauty of the Gravity paints, I have used Zero Paints up until now but since a long time back I have always not liked their metallic paints because if this overscale issue.

So I will quickly go through the process of painting the Gravity Colors: Lamborghini Arancio Atlas, sorry about the poor quality iPhone pics icon_sad.gif

1) First of all primer, the only colour primer to use is white, I know in the picture above in my previous post the bodyshell looks grey instead of white but thats just because of poor lighting and a useless camera!

2) First 2 coats are almost a light mist, the key to painting these colours is to put the paint on slowly and evenly, light coats especially in the beginning are very very important! Heres a pic of the bodyshell with about 2 light mist coats and my trusty Iwata Kustom AB which I use for painting bodyshells and large surfaces:

IMG_9813.jpg

3) Now 4-5 more light coats, the colour will begin to develop, dont be tempted to start putting the paint on thick! Here it is after about 7 light coats:

IMG_9814.jpg

4) Another 5-6 coats gradually putting the paint on heavier to build up the depth and we are almost there! The spoon is where we want to be and you can see the bodyshell is almost matching:

IMG_9815.jpg

5) Another 4 or so thicker coats, when I spray my thick coats I move the body and AB more rather than painting thick and slow. I find that if you spray thick and slow you always end up with runs and poor finishes. Disregard the orange peel as this will be sorted out once the clearcoats go on.

IMG_98191.jpg

In total I used pretty much the whole bottle which is 30ml, so that gives you a picture of the quantities of paint required.

Be patient and build the layers of paint up and you will get an amazing depth of colour, the pictures dont do this justice as the orange really pops and the pearl in the paint is awesome!

Thanks Gravity Colors for such an awesome product!

I didn't know Lamborghini were inspired by a Mk.1 Escort Nick...??!! :P:D

(apologies for going OT imster, just something Nick & I wind each other up about!)

Keith

PS that paint looks lovely!

Blimey 17 coats of paint before clear.

And I thought my occasional 3 before clear was a lot haha.

I usually only do 2 with a wet sand in between then the same with clear but using 2000 grade rather than the 800 I use on the colour coats.

Maybe that's why I never get a deep shine lol.

The colour looks great though. Sort of a darker and more translucent version of Ford's ST orange lol.

That's why I always looked for mica finish paints from Zero as Steve stated it had the finest metallic flakes. He also said he could do any colour as a mica finish, but whenever I e-mailed him to try & order any I never got a reply. I'm going back a good few years now though, so his comms may well be better!

Thanks for posting this build, imster. I have been wondering how good Gravity paints were, so it's really nice to have some first-hand experience. Great colour choice (although the green looks fabulous too!)

Gravity also ship to Australia, unlike Zero Paints :-(

Yep down under in Australia. I ordered on 30th Jan and there is still no sign of them. This has got to be the longest time I've ever waited for anything shipped from any location in the whole wide world :sleep_1:

I knew you'd chip in!!!

In terms of affordability, it has to be this way - JWA GT(40), Miura then the Mk1. But I have to say that the new GT is pushing very hard - hoping to get to Silverstone to watch them in action. Would liked to have gone to Le Mans but have a wedding to attend that weekend. Incidentally, the Ford GTs will be running 66, 67, 68 and 69 - how cool is that?!

Back on topic - that's looking great. Are these paints enamel or two pack? (I guess I could have a look on the website, but just being lazy.) I'm going to (probably) be boring and go for the lime green on mine - I just love that colour.
