Eduard Spitfire Mk.XVI - 17 Sqn Farnborough 1950 - Finished...

Recommended Posts

Back to the bench today for a bit. I have been ill for the last few days so today now 99% better I wanted to crack on but suffering a distinct lack of mojo. It took me until lunchtime to finally sit down and get on with it.

The behind the cockpit needed painting where the canopy had been sitting so out came the Xtreme Metals again.

The Barracuda resin upper cowl spent the morning soaking in isopropyl alcohol to remove the aluminium after the imperfection from the previous paint job.

The result is successful but the surrounding masking tape has lifted more of the black walkway that had the hairspray technique. I feel this has worn it way too much for my liking so I will probably re-spray and chip it again.

The upper cowl re-sprayed. The tyres painted Tamiya Rubber Black.

A recent purchase that I saw when I was buying blue paints for the roundel. This is designed to go over the new range of Vallejo acrylic metallics so I thought I would give it a go over the AK stuff. Clear coats over metallics are usually to be avoided as they loose the metallic lustre of the original finish.

The underline where the line runs from wing to wing. Above this the whole wing has the varnish applied while below the underline is how it was non varnished. I can hardly see any change so am calling this a success.

It's looking fantastic Mark. This thread has already contained a wealth of new ideas and information, and now the metal varnish. We searched high and low for a good metal clear coat during the P-47 STGB, but didn't come across the Vallejo stuff. It looks very good. Thanks for yet another modelling tip.

Hi guys

Today's update:

The paint bleeds on the roundels were cleaned up.

The walkway on the port wing was re-masked, painted and chipped back again. I am a lot more satisfied with it now. (Note so self: Do not mask over it again.)

Finally I have spent a good few hours watching episode after episode of great planes on YouTube while applying all the required decals and stencils.

The pics....

Tomorrow she will get a coat of varnish to seal everything in as long as I am happy the decals have all shrunk back enough.

Until then, Ciao...

Hi guys

Not a lot to report today.

Firstly the last decals around the canopy went down before the maskol was re-applied ready for clear coat.

The varnish went on without incident. I decided to take a few shots outside for a change.

I will allow this to fully cure overnight before I start breaking out the washes etc...

The thing that I am stalling on is the exhaust pipes. I'm not quite sure how to tackle them.

Hi guys

Little update before I go back to work for the next four nights. I started off the panel line wash today. I have only done the tops of the wings and the tops of the rear horizontal stabilisers so far.

On a different note since I varnished the model I have found out the AK Xtreme Metals are resistant to enamels thinners etc so in a way I didn't need to clear coat it but it is good to seal the decals in. (I have since found this to be incorrect. It requires a clear coat as the enamel wash eats into the Xtreme Metal).

It's a bit hard to show the results on camera. I should have done one wing and left the other clean to hi-light this more..

The undercarriage has been given the treatment also.

Until next week.

Ciao..

Your photos of the post-wash wings highlights just how much detail there is on the surface of this kit! Well done bringing it all out to such great effect.

I haven't even washed the rivets as I feel this will be too much and they are pronounced enough. I have only done the larger rivets and panel lines.

Hi guys

Back at the bench today.

The exhausts are now done. A mix of Tamiya black and red brown for the base. AK True Metal dark aluminium dry brushed over the top. Citadel Nuln oil wash over that. Tamiya flat coat to seal it all in. Finally Ammo track rust and black pigments to give it the used look.

26205732633_7eb6d3aa1a_h.jpgIMAG0708 by Mark Inman, on Flickr

The fuselage wash is finished.

26204712754_a443834408_h.jpgIMAG0709 by Mark Inman, on Flickr

The underside I decided to go a bit heavier and applied the wash to all rivets behind the spar. The effect is ok but I'm defiantly glad I didn't go that heavy on the top side or fuselage.

I'm popping out to get some Tamiya semi gloss as my current one is pretty much empty and a bit contaminated with something.

I think it is too shiny so a coat of semi gloss should knock it all back a touch. Then I will attempt the exhaust staining which I will keep light and possibly work a bit of oils into the top of the wing around the walk way. The tyres still need finishing and weathering also but the light is at the end of the tunnel. Hoping to have this build finished over the next few days fingers crossed..

No Spitfire update but I have been busy making a light box to photograph in.

1x box - free

1x pack of tissue paper from Hobbycraft - £1

1x white card also from Hobby craft - £2.50

I'm not sure if I need more powerful lights rather than the two LED magnifiers I have to model with. The pics are still only with my phone so hopefully the DSLR will be a lot sharper.

Hi guys

Apart from the whip aerial behind the cockpit she is done. I had a minor issue while gluing the undercarriage when I got a blob of Tamiya extra thin on one of the radiators. It has eaten away a bit of the surface detail unfortunately but I have sanded it back, repainted and re-weathered it so it's not too bad. Overall I have really enjoyed this build.

Here are a couple of shots until I take the proper pictures tomorrow for the gallery and RFI.

This is fantastic, I'm impressed by the overall finish, very realistic. With a photoshopped background it would pass for a real aircraft. Considering also the reasons why you choose this subject, I'm sure you can be proud of this model

The many techniques you've explained in this thread have also been very useful, thanks for sharing !

Thanks guys. I have taken a few pictures and now going to have a play around editing them so should be up soon. The antenna behind the cockpit managed to get some glue on the paintwork. most annoying. I have touched it up but I feel it still needs work.

Most of the techniques I have shared are ones that I have picked up along the way through facebook, youtube and publications like the weathering mag etc.. These people have shared it with me so it's good to pass on a few bits if it helps others.
